....................I have to admit it all looks a bit bleak - I tried to convince myself that it was all going to come together BUT I think that aint gonna happen.

Today (as Spud said) the referee was the worst I have seen at this level BUT we were also playing against 11 Thurrock players AND ourselves

What can Smith do? -- I really don't know - We have some players who are undoubtedly good but.......................

I fear for our games against Bath and especially Lewes - We may get hammered

I still have hope......

The team played well for the 1st half on Saturday but fell away 2nd half.
If it means that this season is all about building for next season then so be it.
Its still early days yet and I still have hope.....I would hope everyone on the forum stay's positive and we all get behind the team.

It was the lack of competitive spirt in the second half that got me. The amount of free headers they had in midfield was awful. I couldn't understand if Chippy wasn't playing how Kevill was left out. The midfield was awful - no surprise that 3 of them were replaced.

I hate to say it but JT is becoming a liability - if you come for balls like the ball for the second goal you have to hold it not just knock it to their striker. We were in the game at 1-0 when he made this mistake. We were in the game at Cambridge when he dropped that clanger. The Dorchester free kick also went in the side he was on on Saturday. He is costing us points - is Smith brave enough to do someting about it?

They are all ssmudgers signings even JT hes given all of them contracts or signed them up. Its up to him to sort it. Building for next year is pants and an excuse. Weve fell away last two seasons but competed, this year weve played 4 teams who arent among the best and we are down the bottom, Its got to change and quick or we are looking at a season of hell.

What can we do apart from getting behind the team?
Four games isn't enough to say how we are going to do for the rest of the season, but I must admit, it does look bleak.
If we can't beat a side like Thurrock, what the hell are we going to do against better opposition?
Neil needs to get things sorted ASAP or we are down the proverbial creek......

As I am at risk of sounding like a broken record (for those who remember such things) he has got to find a combination that stops beating itself. This team looks like one that can find anyway you want to lose (own errors, stuck on motorway, parlous ref). If that means less good players that work as a combination or are just luckier, so be it.

Given we aren't that prolific, we looked like we thought we could win before the second goal and hoped we could after. I have seen two games and we have made three foul ups at game defining moments and that is going to kill anybody's confidence in the end.

Adie had half a season to eliminate his chaff in the first season he was in whilst keeping us up. I have a nasty feeling it is going to take at least as long to iron this lot out and there is going to be a lot of looking down this season....

although I shall be delighted to be proven wrong!

Right my thoughts are as follows.

Nothing wrong with the back four although Sinclair needs to learn when and when not to challenge for the ball. The bloke behind them however.........I make that nine league goals conceded and, I would say, that at least four of them are partly down to him.

I don't quite know what we are trying to do in midfield as we seem to play a different formation every game. Keevil has been the best to date but 'Magic' is not contributing anything and Mucu might be better employed at this stage as an impact sub as he was against Dorchester.

Forward combination is all wrong for me. All neat and tidy footballers but nobody trying to get in behind the other team and stretch the play. Not sure Blackman can provide that and/or what his best position is.

As Spud remarked a week or two back we might get some plaudits for playing nice football but we need points not plaudits. Of course the new manager needs time to sort out formations and players but I think he has his work cut out with the current crop.

I can accept defeat (you have to as a Welling fan) but losing and not trying, as we witnessed in the second half at Furrock, is unaccpetable.

Neil's record is 4 points from 5 matches and all of our opponents have at best got 6 points from 5 games.

Ade did indeed have a pretty poor start too with only 2 points from his first 5 matches.  There are however 2 significant differences namely that it was not his team but one he inherited and that the losses were to the runaway Champions, a playoff side and one which finished just outside the playoffs and the draws were with teams who finished mid table.

I'll answer the Liam Daish question before it is raised - Liam had 4 matches and got 9 points from the sides who finished 21st and 22nd and a point from a side which finished mid table.  What he may have achieved we will never know.

Ade's next 2 results were both convincing wins against mid table sides - I hope Neil can follow suite but with 3 of our next 5 matches being against unbeaten sides with good goal differences and a fourth against another top 5 side its going to be tough.

The most disapointing thing about the Thurrock game was as soon as the second goal went in we lost all belief, and any shape to the side. Build up play was good at times but I dont remember their keeper making any saves, and this is against a team who looked worse than us.

Graham Hobbins
Nicky Brigden (Legend)
Terry Robbins (Legend on the pitch)
Kevin Hales
Tony Reynolds
Paul Parker
Adie Pennock
Neil Smith

(The overwhelming majority of ALL of our past managers)

Ok i'll be constructive and not beat my same old drum... Put a new slant on it and NOT say the club dont want success...

WHY? Do they always appoint Managers with NO previous experience? Have they not learned their lesson?? There are Managers PROVEN to get results and success, so why always go with someone wet behind the ears? Nothing to do with having a puppet and controlling them then? Yes Neil has sc rewed it right up but  who appointed him ???

I know it looks bleak at the moment but i think we need to give Neil and Nethers some time to work out who their best and most reliable players are and get behind them. Neil also needs to realise that we are not in the Premier league, we cant afford to rest players in must win games. Cos lets be honest yesterday against a very poor Thurrock side was! Dont think it matters to much as to which teams we have played so far as we know that anyone can beat anyone on the day in this league, although if we play like we did in the second half yesterday we may as well give up now. Totally agree with your thoughts wingnut, Chip and Keevil MUST play Saturday and hopefully we will have a new goalkeeper, two new wingers and a bit of raw pace up top to play with the almighty Coleman. Come on boys get this season started Saturday. Come on you wings!!!

Bill Williams was manager as well. He was experienced but had only moderate success at Welling!

Experienced but well past his sell by date as has been said on many occasions during and since his term of managership. Old fashioned and never really got to grips with the game of the day.

I think what a big concern is our concentration after the restart (start of second half). We seem to always conceed a goal and is getting rather annoying. You make one mistake and learn from it, maybe do it again once more, but how many times have we done it now?

Tony Sitford was experienced and knew the Kent scene he didnt last long and we were in the Athenian league at that time.

One manager Sitford was... Now reel off all the inexperienced ones who won nothing at Welling....

Managerial experience (within the management team) + man management skills + Knowledge of the Kent non league football scene + a modicum of luck = successful manager.

All managers have to start somewhere but I would suggest that the first 2 elements on the left hand side of the equation are essential, the third highly desirable and the 4th is in the lap of the Gods. I believe that in Neil's case since he doesn't have managerial experience within his team his learning curve is very steep with a short timeframe. It is achievable but its one hell of a slog.
