Jimmy Greaves was on at the Orchard theatre the other night. He was asked what his biggest wage packet was. The answer was £100 per week. Asked what his biggest regret was. Answer, being born too early.
He joined Spurs in 1961 and left in 1970 so lets say his peak there was 1966. In 1966, the average weekly wage was about £20 per week. I think I was earning about £15 plus commision. So Greavsie was earning about 5 times the average weekly wage.
Take today's average as being about £600 it puts Greavsies wage at £3000 a week. A far cry from the £100,000 some are getting and I'd pick Greavsie over 10 Ronaldos.
I'm not saying wages should be capped but something needs to be done. An idea would be to limit the clubs budget that they can spend on wages. It worked in Aussie Rules football a few years back. Also any money over a certain figure spent on transfers should be matched on ground improvements. At least the fans would be more comfortable watching their prima donnas. Dumps like Stamford Bridge would end up as one of the best grounds in the country.
Changing the subject, if I win any of the top three prizes in the raffle at Derek Brown's testimonial tomorrow night. Singed Welling shirt, signed Charlton shirt or a case of wine. Can I swap it for 4th prize, a bottle of 12 year old malt whisky?
