They had to be the sh1ttest channel ever. Crap reception, crap presenters. They did however save everyone loads by taking some of the stuff sky would have charged extra for and making it semi affordable.

I cant see ESPN or anyone else showing conference prem and to be fair i never watched it unless and ex wing was playing or i fancied a big bet.

never going to work charging £14.99 per month. most people would just want the football and just how many of the 2 games per week would you actually watch? I've got Setanta and probably watched 1 or games per month max (that's £7.50 per game IF i actually paid the £15)

Gary ...

A HUGE percentage of setanta customers signed to watch Racing UK and the American Golf. Add those that joined for the superb Boxing Bouts they put on and the Football wasnt as big a draw as many football fans would believe it to be.

i'm not talking about the original setanta customers who, like you say, wanted the racing and golf BUT later, setanta gambled massive money on the football rights hoping they could get enough subscribers at £15 a pop. Way too much. Maybe if they started and kept at £9.99 then they would be in this mess and our club wouldn't be thousands out of pocket.

Its got the hallmarks of the ITV Digital fiasco but will affect clubs at our level instead. At least we have not found out half way through the season with thier money already budgeted for.

i personally quite liked it and it was a good alternative to the monster that is sky

and their non-league coverage and fa cup coverage was second to none and i liked to watch AFL plus all the other channels they threw in - was great value for money and meant i didnt have to listen to andy grey when watching the over-hyped (and often boring) permiership

Craig Burley was dreadful, Andy Grey is class. Setanta run before they could walk. Personally I feel people pay enough for Sky and trying to get them to pay an extra fee to watch 2n rate Premier league games wont work. ESPN will find this out.

Watched the Sky News report about it last night, surpringsly unbiased, but here's a basic lesson in running a business...

Losing £100 million a year when you've invested best part of a billion and you're 700,00 suscribers of breaking even isn't the best way to run a company trying to rival Sky Sports

no i cant belive people think that - he's a total moron and the only commentator sad enough to have catch phrases

and i could rant all day about how bad he is but ill onluy make one point - take note of how he always slags off players, tactics after the event -

eg the villa game at man u and that first goal from the indirect free-kick - once the goal went in he started saying how there should have been a bigger man on the post and spouted other rubbish but i didnt hear him saying that BEFORE the freekick was taken - it's easy to comment in hindsight and he always takes cheap knocks at refs and sucks up to the big players

total kn*b and the id like to see the "big" games given to their other commentators who are much much better than him

rant over

I'm not sure if it was trying to rival Sky. They obviously thought there was a gap in the market to run a profitable business. They may have been better off getting in bed with the bigger boys slowly building up their market capital and client base. Big mistake in competing for the international matches, they were then on their own. Setanta did not interest me in the slightest, maybe their advertising technique was part of the problem.

Do we presume that the 'Setanta Trophy' competition will cease to exist as it seems to have been created pretty much as a television tournament?

Wasn't the Setanta Trophy in place of the 'league' cup we use to have?

With the low attendances for the Setanta trophy last year i hope the league scraps it along with any ideas for a league trophy/cup.

Non league teams have the league, FA trophy, fa cup and county cups (in our case two). It might have been cost effective last season to have an extra trophy, considering the prize money from Setanta,  but without big money it will be pointless.

PS Buncey is a regular host on BBC London radio
