I'll be wandering around on Sunday if you want to have a word. I will be wearing blue jeans and black trainers.

That's very sad if there is no presence from Welling United FC. As a small local club surely there is an important need to advertise to the community.
If it's not down to cost then it may just be down to someone taking ownership of the task to get the spot booked and an idea of how to attract people. It's not as if the date changes every year.

Dear all,

I've reading the thread here so thought I better explain why Welling United are not participating at this year's Danson Festival.

I have been responsible for organising our presence at the last 3 Danson Festivals through the WSU, however this year we have had a real problem sorting out the main feature for the Welling United Stand

Each year we normally hire the speed test machine through the same company, however this now has a new owner who for what ever reason will not hire equipment to us claiming the piece of machinery is out of action, since then we have been frantically been trying to find another company to hire this from and hit a brick wall, until we found out Gary from the Youth team setup runs a speed hire machine, great news, but they can only lend us this for just one of the two days.

We have ran other activities on our stand from keep ups to skill tests but these do not generate anywhere near the amount of income as the speed test.

I am sorry to say this is too much of a financial risk to pay for the stand space, machine hire, electric for machinery, prizes this would easily amount to £700 outlay.  I'm not happy to take on this risk for revenue for ultimately one day's action.

Sorry that we won't be there this year, the club will miss out on the exposure, but it is the supporters who man the stand at the festival!

I do believe we will be there in 2010 and if anyone feels they can organise this with me or would like to take this on, then please let me know

Thank you for the info 'Matt The Hat'.
I am aware that there are a lot of people who work very hard for the club but I think there are always oppotunities for learning. Before your posting there had been no communication regarding the difficulties being faced. Having no communication generally leads to a negative feeling. I know whats it like to take on responsibility to do something and sometimes asking others for help can seem like failure, it is not! If challenges are being faced, they can be over come by asking for help/assistance. This forum is a channel of communication that could be explored, you never know someone may have a contact that could have all the answers.
As someone that does not do the work for the club like yourself I take my hat off to you. Keep up the good work my friend.

Bottom line is "the club" does sweet fa regarding the Danson Festival and relied on the WSU for exposure. Without Matt's and their hard work, "the club" would have had no presence there at all for the last few years. I'm not even sure that they have sent any representatives over at all in the last couple of years apart from the odd player turning up late in the day (often of thier own volition)

The club needs to self promote not sit on their arse and wait/expect someone else to do all the hard work for them. They are looking for new sponsors but yet they can't even raise thier profile at an annual event on their own doorstep.

The WSU is not adverse to a bit of learning, Trig. It's all we've done all last season. I believe that Matt (who personally has worked tremendously hard in organising our prescence at the Danson Festival for the last few years) had the rug pulled from under him regarding the equipment fairly late on. Doubtless he'll confirm/clarify this.

WSU meetings are held throughout the year which are open to all and at which our appearance at the Danson Festival was often discussed. Furthermore, the WSU website was no stranger to asking for help (e.g. we appealed for cheap/free but effective sound equipment for the Clubhouse last season) and it's something I at least would want to use in a similar way for the upcoming season.

I can confirm that this is so.  Indeed at its June meeting several WSU attendees confirmed that they had made arrangements to be available for the Friday afternoon to set the area up having booked leave from work in some cases.

Dear Sherpa, it appears to me that there is a small group of people that take on an enormous amount of work (with limited support) to assist Welling United FC. Reading some of the posts, it would suggest that the management of the club could do more (possibly what is meant is that they could do things differently). As I said previously "I take my hat off to those who put themselves out for the benefit of the Wings" I for one do nothing in comparison and as such will never put down the efforts of those that do. However, that does not prevent me from giving contructive input, be it positive or negative based upon the information I have at the time.
Best regards.

Hi Trig,

It certainly doesn't prevent you from giving constructive input, and I hope that you and others continue to do so in future. How else can we learn? Equally, as you've probably guessed, I get a bit protective of the WSU and its regulars, especially when things go awry like this, and I think it's more a case on my part here of setting the record straight, which I hope you'll find the intention.

Hope to see you shortly for the start of the new season.

Cheers

Sherpa

Hello WSU,

Are we running "Sponsor a Goal" again this year?  I think now, more than ever, we need this to continue this season.

After reading your previous posting I have had a browse at the WSU web site. Do you know that I have never seen it before. Seems quite good and sad to read about the number of people that attend. One thing that came across was the fact of what you "guys" do and the level of funding that has been raised, well done! I hope the club's management shows you their appreciation in a way that is fitting.
Best regards and keep being protective my friend.

I can confirm that WSU are running sponsor a goal this season and there has been much discussion as to how we can try to increase participation.

Dear WSU
I have recently read questions that have been posted on the forum.
1. When is the next meeting?
2. Is there going to be a sponsor a goal next season?

As I have learnt from Sherpa, there is a web site and the answers are on it.
The question I have to ask is are others aware of its existance?

Trigger, All WSU events are posted in the entrance to PVR and by the WSU table inside the ground and I'm sure that at least some of these carried the website address. It has also been in the programme and there is a hyperlink to it on the Official website.

As far as viewers of this forum knowing of the existence of the WSU website last season a hyperlink was placed in several posts concerning WSU events/activities which took you to their website. Additionally during the latter part of the season there was a post about the remaining WSU events which was kept at the top of the index and this too included hyperlinks one of which took you to the WSU website and another, where appropriate, to a thread about the event.

I'm sure that all of these areas will continue to be used to publicise WSU activities and its website.

As Sherpa has already said "The WSU is not adverse to a bit of learning... It's all we've done all last season". As a direct result of some of that learning I'm sure those attending PVR will be hearing much more about the WSU, its achievements and its ongoing fundraising in the very near future.

Ouch! I think I touch a nerve. The point that I was trying to make is that although there is a WSU web site, not everyone uses it for a source of information. I for one did not and to be truthful may not visit it every day. However due to information posted earlier I am now aware of it. When I go to PVR I have always gone straight to my seat and read my programme, I do not go into the club house or any where else come to that. I watch the match and then go home. If there is information regarding the WSU in the programme I obviously do not register it. So the time I get home (about 17:10) it is not on the top of my agenda. One problem with writing things down is that the person reading the posting may not read it in the way it was intended to be read.
The common denominator is that we all want the best for the club.

Just sheer frustration on my part coupled with a 'bad day at the office' Trigger.

The website is certainly not one I would suggest anyone visits each day as news is not that regular but it is certainly worth visiting periodically to see what updates have been made re: the dates of WSU meetings (which all are welcome to attend to either to participate or if they so wish just to observe); reports on events held;  fundraising events planned; the 49 Club winners; how Sponsor a Player and Sponsor a Goal are doing etc.

You most likely answer to someone like me! No man management skills, only understands SWOT analysis and hasn't a clue about Johari's Window. And making profit is the be all and end all of life its self.

I understand where your coming from trigger with the wsu info, as until recently i never saw the link on the website. As i only look at the top of the page on the official site to see what news the club has posted. Which always seems to be found on the fans forum first so therefore this is my first place of call. On A Plus though, Through yourself and the others on this post i hope you've made more people aware of what, where n when to visit the wings and be part of the club.
Cheers trigger.

Come on you wings.  floating.gif

My dear Patsy, I've only just managed to get myself out of that hole with the WSU. I've had to hire minders for Wednesday and it's costing me a small fortune in pints of appologies.
