Some Things for 2010 that should be done
Permalink

1 Mailing list options on main site (Business and Supporters/Residents) and regular emails and texts to subscribers. FREE
2 Facebook and Twitter Official pages for the club. FREE
3 Sunday Lunch opening of the bar through to 6pm showing the Sky Football. Cheap
4 Club Shop fully stocked and online buying options.
5 Sell places on the board of directors to enable progression or invite investment. FREE
6 Club Sponsor aggressively sought NOW for 2010-2011 season (Business raffle tickets at £50 or £100 a pop if you have to.) FREE
7 Clear the empty Advertising Hoardings and sell new ones, reduce charges or length of placement of hoarding to generate more money that you are getting now. Cheap
8 Organise a big charity game at the end of the season in association with the council or a local branch of a national charity this is great for the community and also gets the news out in the local area about the club. People like Danny Dyer, Olly Murs and co would ensure the ground is packed and gets great publicity in the print/radio and maybe tv. Dont get people down who once were an extra on the bill etc. FREE as get sponsors to cover programme and expenses.
9 Have a presence at Danson this year selling club merchandise, offering free membership of junior wings (free draw for all kids signing up, prizes of a pen/key ring for most but a shirt or scarf or tshirt for a handful of them) and some games for people to join in and raffles. Cheap you can pick up pens and keyrings cheap in bulk.
10 Advertise in the Papers and Local radio for each game and get Match Posters in local pubs and on the official site to download. Cheap as i could get the radio adverts done as a favour or cheap.

You have to create some sort of connection with the local population, you have to maximise sales, you have to make it easy for people to spend their money with you.

Feel free to add your ideas.

Just to play Devils Advocate for a second.

All things that are free still come at a cost, the cost of time. This is where time management comes into play.

I do agree that advertising is extremely important but this can only be exploited within the budget and time available.

Prioritising where the money gets invested is not easy. A poor example is this, if you were given £100 to bet on something, would you make the same bet if it were your last £100 in your bank account?

So what is the club's priority? survival? If the answer is yes then other areas of the business will be affected if on a tight budget.

The management team does not seem as 'open' as they could be, an example of this could be the Christmas raffle. I am confident that if they asked, some of us may have assisted in providing a prize. Xmas hamper sponsored by Trigger.

As I'm sure some of you know, running a business is not easy and I'm sure they are trying their best.

jgfc has put forward valid ideas, trigger also has made a valid statement.
my questions are,am i right in saying MR HOBBINS SNR,MR HOBBINS JNR run welling utd on a full time basis.
Question Two has doing just enough taken over its a concern if this is the case.
Question three surely a commercial director is needed.

The thing's I would like to see from the club going forward into the New Year are.

1. Be more proactive in looking for sponsorship.
2. Giving us feed back on how this is going.
3. Utilize what they have, the club house, the ground.
4. Work with Erith & Belvedere in regard to getting the 'brand' out in the community.
5. Other than asking for help to clear the snow, ask the fans for other things, we may have the answers.
6. Quiz nights are great, but are there other forms of entertainment that can be of interest?

Ashby says two out until end of season. Who on earth is the second one (not Cracknell surely and had better not be Andrews!)?

Why was morale low when they joined the club? We had just won three on the spin.

I must have been suffering double vision on Boxing Day. I could have sworn we lost two-nil.

Knew about Lawson but thought my eyes weren't deceiving me at Bromley re. Cracknell. Pray to god it isn't Andrews (don't believe so) and that Ashby/or the website have stumbled over their words!

I mentioned this before at a WSU meeting  and it was met with mixed response as if technology was something like the occult.  and not to be dabbled in!!

3 Sunday Lunch opening of the bar through to 6pm showing the Sky Football. Cheap
Something else I said at a meeting but this was for a Xmas Dinner. not enough space was the reply But Surely if you can cook dinner for 30 players etc then meals
wouldnt be a problem,

5 Sell places on the board of directors to enable progression or invite investment. FREE
I see something like this on Chelmsford site but it was to join the Supporters Club.
Why Not after all the money going to what you believe in.
Didn't agree with the standing for election to be The Head as That causes Cliques.

8 Organise a big charity game at the end of the season
I mentioned this too I used the idea of A celebrity team, The Actual team, or the vets vs welling Supporters anyone not just the supporters club. where each person Paid to play  (£5)  and pending on the amount of people resulted in mins played
33 players= 30mins each so play 3 30min thirds.
trust me people will pay to watch others make an arse of themselves.
Once again It was Frowned Upon.

10 Advertise in the Papers and Local radio for each game and get Match Posters in local pubs and on the official site to download. Cheap as i could get the radio adverts done as a favour or cheap.
I believe we mentioned this on the forum before JGFC where
some fixtures are printed on a sheet n people can take them
and help advertise in local pubs n cafes or work.

Im Not trying to be a naysayer I have helped to raise monies for the club and it is hard, Trigger is right free still comes at a cost, JGFC has good ideas and they never seem to be picked up by the right people or backed by others, or the worst is, its always left too late. for example xmas raffle only had 4 home games to sell them and 1 of them was v croydon.

Another Idea are event days dont just keep them all in house Offer places to the local businesses seeing as the club is lacking sponsers. We all know most directors love a day out of the office.

Another Idea its been on the forum that Daysy has contacts in the game. So lets see if with his help we can use them to our advantage and try to get some Signed Shirts (Charlton, Arsenal etc), or even a meet the player/s from ie Liam Brady as not just wings fans will turn up.

Ive Used enough space Sorry to go on Just want the wings to be in a better position than they are. COYW !biggrin

There are many good ideas on here.  With the current lack of sponsorship, falling attendances and the club clearly not in a very healthy financial situation surely it would now benefit both the owners and the fans for a "Meet the Owners" evening to be held.  I remember one being held in conjunction with "Meet the Manager" some years ago and I think it benefitted both owners and fans to hear the others views.

One thing that does not seem to get mentioned on here is the fact that at all Welling games apart from the Charlton friendly the E & B clubhouse, which in my opinion is superior to the Welling one, stands locked and unused.  I have noticed at Bromley that they have 2 clubhouses/bars open and in the upstairs bar people appear able to buy food, teas and coffees in addition to the usual bar fare.  I wonder if it would be worthwhile for the club to negotiate the opening of the E & B clubhouse for this sort of purpose.  I for one would be much more inclined to buy refreshments before the match or at half time if it were possible to get them inside rather than queuing outside in the cold or rain.  Only the clubhouse end of the E & B facilities would need to be opened, the remainder could remain locked to maintain their security.

What do others feel about this?

The only way this club can move forward is by the hobbins selling up, They have done a good job but have taken the club as far as they can.

The thing about joining with Erith & B & Q and creating a brand? albeit only in the community. No way , they are potless, they contributed to us not reaching the play offs by not contributing to the new floodlights WHICH THEY USE!!

We are Welling, We play in Red, PVR is our ground. We are not to merge or join Erith in anyway , we are not to wear Green & White hoops and merge with Corinthian or be taken over by them in any way.

We have a brand its Welling United, we have a history and story. We do not need that infected by another two bob club.

My dear JgFc, I seemed to have touched a nerve.
On reflection after re-reading my posting I feel that part of it could have been worded differently. I don't proclaim to know the in's and out's of both clubs financial standings, but I do understand to some degree, business. There may be some areas where joining together can save money but still get the same or better result. Example being sitting down and talking about which suppliers they both use for programmes for example. If they both use the same publisher they may benefit from a discount. And this could be rolled out forward into the community by sharing the advertising costs if agreements can be sought.
In challenging times differences should be shelved if by working together it can produce positives for them both.
I have no interest in Erith & Belvedere and as such refuse to even sit in their stand, maybe that's me being slightly petty.

Trigger no problem. As i see it. Their stand was over half funded by WUFC and its fans and a football foundation grant to WELLING UNITED.

What have Erith ever done for us? except ponced? When we needed the lights fixed, they didnt pay a penny and we had to put games back and play at neutral ground. I wouldnt p1ss on their stand if it was on fire. They bring nothing to PVR and never have done.

They are even more commercially inept than us. Cant they go and play in an all seater 125 seat capacity ground somewhere?

We do not need to bond with a small club commercially or in the community, we quite literally are in a different league despite being lacking ourselves.

What can I say except as an ordinary 'Joe Bloggs' I will still manage to get to most home games (can't make Tuesdays as I play pool for the Falconwood Club) and very few away matches, will purchase a scratch card and bonus ball and support the the team that I do in my own special little way. And hope for better times ahead.

Whilst not wishing to diss your sentiments your statement is ridiculous in a way. The Hobbins are Welling and it's their Club at the end of the day. Supporters can take it or leave it. Whilst not always showing the greatest of ambition they do live within their means and constantly defy the odds on the pitch which has always been a strong ethos of the Club.

I've little time for E & B either.  If you need a football fix and Welling are not playing, VCD are a much better option.

Unfortunately we can't escape the fact that  due to past decisions they do share PVR and have facilities there so they will not be going anywhere unless the club was to fold.  Their attendances have also dropped considerably in the last couple of seasons and they were never big to start with.  I've also heard that they've lost quite a few players recently so you do wonder how they stand financially.  I don't suppose anyone from either club would ever say but it would be interesting to know just how much they contribute to the running and maintenance costs of the ground.  Even if the amounts are small, it must be in Welling's interest for E & B to continue or our financial situation could become worse still.  I think it's becoming more and more important that someone sorts out Welling commercially asap or with both clubs apparently on the slide off the field, the merger which we all dread might one day suddenly happen.

Trigger , you are hardly average Joe Bloggs, They should be listening to Businesses like yours and others who have an affinity with Welling, especially when they are among the main supporters of the team and they give a toss.

As far as i'm aware, although will happily be shot down in flames if i'm wrong, E&B contribute absolutely NOTHING to the rent or ground upkeep.

Lots of excellent suggestions in this thread, and we know full well that none of them will be acted on until the Hobbins' leave the club! They've done a lot of good for this club, but they've reached their limit.

Not even a share of the gate receipts?
If that's true then they are nothing but squatters and it's a scandal! Our club are too polite for our own good.

When there is no communication coming out from the club's management then there will always be a negative reaction. In my humble opinion if Welling United were a bit more 'open' and honest with their financial position we all may feel slightly happier.
I believe that until we have independant representatives on the club's management committee we will all still be thinking negative thoughts.
