Is there any realistic chance of getting one this season?  Surely we can't go two year's running without one?  Margate banked more than £12,000 this week after running a sponsorship draw.  A nice bit of publicity, too, because the draw was made by a TV weather woman who picked out a local building firm.

Obviously, we have pulled in some much-needed dosh from the friendlies but a sponsorship deal would top it off nicely.  If we don't get a big cash sponsor it would be good to advertise a local firm or charity (if they pay for all of the kit) on the understanding that all bets are off for a while if we have a good Cup run.

Incidentally, I met Ollie McGuiness (boss of Welling Building Services) in the Executive Lounge (which his firm built when they sponsored the Wings) at the Millwall match.  Ollie, who was there with his sons, had been ill but is well on the road to recovery now.  All the best Ollie.

On the basis of us drawing a blank so far there must be some mileage in going to local businesses on the basis of a raffle with the benefits of shirt names, exec lounge etc. Ticket price of £100 doesnt seem to much and if we approach enough people we should be able to get enough money to make it worthwhile.

We could go further afield than just Welling to get the nos in the draw

With such little news of a sponsor it wouldn't surprise me if the club have given up trying and are relying on the money from the friendlies.

The raffle needs to be started at the end of a season for the following season. Big crowd on saturday and Sponsor is basically irrelevant although would be nice.

How about the club putting a local charity on their shirts home and away could be a national charity ,would be good publicity for them.

If it's going to be a charity on the shirts, then i hope it's a cancer charity or that local Hospice one.

I dont think we should give up on a sponsor just because we are getting some good crowds for pre season friendlies. I think if Margate can raise 12k we should be able to top that EASILY. But JGFC is right it needed to be put into motion as soon as last season finished. Margate charged £300 per ticket into their draw and got 40 odd companies involved but I believe everyone won a prize, so those who didnt win the shirt sponsorship got advertising boards , programme advertising, matchday sponsorship and player sponsorship etc. I think the fact you are guaranteed to get something makes it a great idea and companies dont mind shelling out the 300 notes, afterall it is tax deductable isnt it ?? Also the firm who have got Margate's shirt sponsorship for next season werent the 1st pulled out of the hat/bag, apparently it was the company that is run by Margate's Commercial Director/Manager , and being that he organized the whole thing he decided it was in the best interests to pick another winner !!

Its pretty hard, i've even phoned round a few of the leads and a few new companies, some of them i traced through some links in the local area, they pretty much go stone cold when you mention money or Welling United. Or say we will get back to you then they dont and when you get back to them they cant remember.

Not sure if this is because things havent been followed up from before or the club have been non existant commercially for a number of years. I believe Daisy is pursuing some possible sponsors, which is great stuff as previous managers have said they would and they did naff all. Jamie keeps his mouth shut and just gets on with it.

I think a raffle is a good idea. BUT you have to have events to push them at for a year for the next season, Business Golf Days, Paintball, Go Karting, Danson Festival, Beer Festival at PVR or WSU Events and someone to sell the tickets through the year plus adverts in programme, over tannoy etc etc.

Hopefully a team performing well will bring in a sponsor, you dont want to sell it for buttons just for the sake of it.

Did you say BEER FESTIVAL? :D I'll have some of that. The club have pretty much sorted out most of the things that i have wanted them to. They need to make most of all possible revenue options. The longer they wait, the more money they will lose. It's good if Jamie is looking for a sponsor. Maybe he should be the commercial manager for the club? :)

i agree - looks like the sponsor search is more or less over and the big friendlies are being used to gain cash that we would have got from t he sponsors

just hope we get a big gate tomorrow but as usual it's sunny all week and then as soon as the weekend gets nearer the rain appears so that will no doubt lose us a few people tomorrow

If we can't get one then why not offer a company or charity the shirt sponsor for free?

Imagine British Heart Foundation or similar worthwhile charity being our sponsor for free. They get coverage for their good cause and we get links, logos on all the leaflets, websites, charity events. Good publiciity for us, might even make a news story?

Even choose a local one and tie in events.

Could be a first for football? Just an idea but without one we look amateur, with one we look good and if it's unique who knows?

We could put Unicef on our shirts. If it's good enough for Barcelona, then it's good enough for us :D

I would think outside the box...

Go for a charity that is linked to a massive celebrity. Think of the publicity world wide and if you can get that celeb down to a game for a photo call etc...

Its massive news, which could bring in the media and more businesses to sponsor matches and events etc.

How about the Bobby Moore Fund for cancer research? Celebrities are always lining up to help with that one.

Well if you use a celeb headed charity its common sense you will get them for an event to publicise their own charity!

Up there for thinking, down there for dancing.

JGFC - sorry missed your comment about charity sponsor earlier. Even future projects, individual items could be sponsored?

Championship Manager, a future TV programme, a building development, London 2012 - all ideas that would get the club publicity. Would the club draft a press release looking for a free sponsor though? I would invite anybody and any business to contact the club and say why they would make a great shirt sponsor for Welling. Just see what response you get.
