Radio Kent, Matt Davidson

Matt Davidson has this afternoon appealed for a home and away supporter of all the Kent clubs to call him if the can give him a call before and after games this season think they are calling it adopt a fan,They are also covering all Dovers,Dartfords and Ebbsfleets away games this season with a reporter at every game.Good effort their from Radio Kent i think.

-------------------

Should we ban them? they have been terrible to us so why should our gates be affected in derbies by them turning up to cover the other kent teams. Once again it looks like radio kent are ignoring us. Bring back Nick Mullins... discuss

Im going to add to that, Matt Davison has been shocking in putting us at the bottom of priorities. Perhaps things will change if he goes but unlike others he seems happy to stay at radio kent.

This goes in line with local papers (mercury, news shopper etc), they're supposed to cover the local area and all there is to read about is Charlton and Millwall.

Did we do something wrong in a previous life to get hardly any attention from virtually every media source!!!

Newsshopper is good online to be fair. Mercury used to be good as did SVBT, will loads of editorial.

If it wasnt for Panting and Green we would get precious little coverage. But radio kent p1sses me off.

We get any scraps while other kent clubs get commentary or features. My point is, IF they have again ignored us this season to focus on other clubs and treated us differently to them, then why should we risk gates being affected by their live updates and reports on matches at PVR involving the kent clubs they choose to cover?

Didnt Graham ban Radio Kent before, then it improved. Looks like again we get ignored. Same happened when websfleet went in Conference they got live comms, then dover came up they got coverage, now dartford come up they get coverage while we have played at those higher levels all the time and get eff all.

It is clear that us and Bromley are the poor relations again as they will claim we are in London Boroughs, while Charlton are in Kent??? i suggest we bombard them with texts early in the season, & bombard them with emails. if we get no joy then yes we should ban them from the ground, when the 1st of them games come up, i went to VCD V Hythe today, that they covered & their coverage was so biased towards Hythe.

I listen to Radio Kent most weekdays in the mornings and they always mention Welling's games. I don't like Matt Davidson though. Perhaps he's a Dover fan.

Alan a casual mention is nothing to the coverage given to other clubs on Match Days, Welling are lepers when it comes to coverage or commentary with Davison. We always rank below Dartford (even when they were ryman) and the other "Kent" sides.

Lets hope we stick it up the other kent sides and when they want to cover fa cup or trophy if we get a big game we tell them to foxtrot off.

Radio Kent isn't relevant. We don't need it. Local newspaper coverage is more important as it would reach more people that actually care about our club or would do given the chance. Ask people you know how many of them have listened to Radio Kent in the last 10 years. Then ask them when was the last time they looked at the sports section of any of the local newspapers that pop through their letterboxes each week. Maybe someone at the club could arrange interviews with various journos, or get some local newspaper people to sit in on a training session or two, so they can see what's what.

Radio coverage is important, but yes so is the local press, the trouble is we dont have a proper paid for local paper anymore, The Bexley Times has gone right down hill & why they now cover Millwall ill never know, the News Shopper is good online but its not the same as reading a newspaper, its a pity one of them papers couldnt provide some sponsorship, the South London Press & Kent Messenger including their Dartford paper is on sale in Welling/Bexleyheath but they refuse to cover us, a couple of years ago i bought the Maidenhead Advertiser, their their team had two full pages including a full preview of their match with Welling, what a difference

I have just read a piece by Davison where he mentions only Dover, Dartford and Ebsfleet as being part of Radio Kents commentaries this season.

So we have been ignored by them again. The man is a complete Joke.

matt.davison@bbc.co.uk is his email

Feel free to write a few words to him expressing your dismay. They will still find their way to PVR when we are at home to the clubs they want to cover.

I think its discrimination against our club and feel we could write to the BBC head office to complain.

Chaps, it's the same in my sporting world...

I compete for Bexley Athletic Club and we don't get half the mention that Blackheath and Bromley, Dartford Harriers and Cambridge Harriers get round here. Yet we are as successful and dismal as Dartford and are more a family club than the other two put together. Go figure...

I think it it our location. The Borough of Bexley is a no man's land; London doesn't really want us and neither does Kent, I've learnt that in my work (our schools can enter both the North Kent AND London cups...) and isn't the same as Welling??? Don't we have the option of both London and Kent cups?

The boundaries need re-defining. And is it worth trying to get a station in the SE involved (if there is one now...)

The BBC have a duty to Residents to provide a fair coverage, We pay Licence Fees. Now whether Radio Kent and Radio London need to sort this i have no idea. But lets be fair...

Welling should be covered end of story, Its only this fool Matt Davison thats decided not to cover us in any detail and this has gradually got worse and worse.

Nick Mullins and John Warnett were always at Welling. They cannot use the London thing as they cover Charlton, they cannot use the we havent got enough reporters , because you spread them around the kent clubs.

Its discrimination and the BBC are letting our supporters and local residents down, Complaints should be made, if nothing else it will bring some heat on Davison and highlight the discrimination from him and the BBC.

The reality is that Radio London is the local radio station for Greater London - that includes Welling & Bromley.
Radio Kent is the local radio station for the present county of Kent not the former boundaries of the the county of Kent.

The reality is the BBC have a duty to residents, internal politics should not affect residents and licence players.

While other Kent clubs were pottering about in the Southern league, Welling were the flagship Non league team for Radio Kent.

Davison, is the reason that Welling arent covered. The BBC should cover Welling and it was always Radio Kent that did that.

To my knowledge Radio London have NEVER covered Welling nor agreed to do so. Radio Kent and more specificly Matt Davison have just dropped them and have stopped BBC Licence payers from receiving coverage of their Club.

Charlton is obviously in Kent, isnt it Interested One?

It would be best if everyone can bombard Matt Davidson with emails & texts on their saturday show, their is know way Charlton should be covered, even Gills fans complain about that one, while Blackheath Rugby club get every match covered, BBC London do not cover non league clubs, they have enough trouble covering their Div 1 & Div 2 teams except their Charlton favorites, as JGFC says its always been BBC Kents job, & as soon as their other teams rise up the league again they want to forget about us again, the reason is obviously our location as slim says we are in no mans land, but as far as im concerned a Kent postcode is good enough, so if they wont cover us we should simply ban them like we did before.

The points about Blackheath and Charlton are superb. Sadly the problem is Davison, We have had great coverage in the past and we should Get EQUAL coverage to Kent teams at our level.

It would be good if every Welling fan could email him and just put a few lines saying that Radio London have never covered us and Radio Kent have.

If he doesnt buckle and give us EQUAL coverage then we should complain high up to the bbc and get a signed petition on match days.

For once, I agree with you JgFc.

And Charlton, if memory serves me right, is historical borders in Kent. There is/was a bone of contention in athletics when the Kent County AA held the County Champs, which has been held in Ashford in recent history, at Crystal Palace a few years back...Their reason? It was in the 'historical borders of Kent'...

Boll*cks. It was later heard it was to do with the President at the time. And it's probably the same with BBC Kent and Charlton...Scratch my back, I'll scratch yours...

They were quick to mention todays news in their sports round up tonight, its obviously just our matches they have a problem with, i would be grateful if some one could post on here what Davidson says, i will be listening off & on while at the match saturday, but could easily miss it, i will then email Davidson to  take issue with it, i bet he  wont be so silly though as to call us a london club as that would be a massive own goal with Charlton etc

wm

Hes told me

Only Kent council areas and he put Medway in brackets are in Radio Kents "Patch" and we come under the "patch" of Radio London and he said this was the case when he came to Radio Kent. Dover is now in Medway obviously as are Charlton!

He also said our coverage will depend on how well we do. Ive heard that before and took it with a pinch of salt.

They cover SOME Welling news and games as they cover Blackheath Rugby because they aware that Welling Fans listen to Radio Ken, he says.

What he fails to acknowledge is that we SHOULD be covered as licence payers and that BBC London have NEVER covered us and when we were covered as a flagship team that Radio London werent around then according to Davison.

It has ALWAYS been Radio Kent that covered us in great detail under previous Heads of Sport. It sounds rubbish what hes saying but the bare fact is BBC have to cover us as licence payers and that has always been Radio Kent. Im not interested in occasional coverage or big games i want equal exposure to the other sides at our level in KENT.

Cheers for that JGFC, Davidson should know that BBC London has always been around, its had various names like GLR, but has never covered us, if we got a league team in the F.A.C they might put a reporter in, but that would be it.
Davidson has claimed in the past that they cover Charlton because of the large amount of fans they have in Kent, well that doesnt wash with me, Chelsea, Man Utd etc have a large amount of fans in Kent, will they start covering them?
This is just Davidson trying to wriggle out of covering us again with the rise of dartford & the Frenchies, i seem to recall the Frenchies were in Ryman Division 1 when Kent started covering us before, after being banned, i suggest we should make them welcome until one of them games come up like Dartford then refuse them entry, One final thought if we are a london club, why does he call games we play against Dover etc Kent derby?

If you go to the BBc london website you will see that includes a map of the area covered ;

http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/46533000/gif/_46533838_bbclocalmaplondon.gif

& if you go to the BBC kent website that also includes a map of the area covered

http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/46533000/gif/_46533828_bbclocalmapkent.gif

That is how the BBC have divided it up - so if the beef is that the present arrangement doesn't satify Welling , Bromley etc then that should be taken up with the BBC hierachy. Presumably the allocation of funds for local radio is based upon the expected area of coverage so that BBC London would receive that funding for the areas of Welling , Bromley etc.

Davison here last saturday explaining why we dont get covered. We will get interviews with Daisy, and "Occaisional" match coverage on Radio Kent, lol. forward to 24 mins 45

He says that Radio London receive our money. He refuses to accept they dont cover non league. But at least he has agreed we pay money. So the BBC needs to address it i would say. Its EASIER if BBC Radio London pay Radio Kent the pennies they need to so we and Bromley as the highest metropilitan kent teams get coverage that is EQUAL to Dartford and the others.

So we have 2 options bombard Radio London. Or Bombard Local Radio. Whats a complete farce is... Dartford are minutes down the road and Davison is making out it would cost loads more to cover us.

iPlayer Saturday Sport Radio Charlton

What is clear is we should be covered and it is more than reasonable to suggest as Radio Kent have done this that they start to again or THEY sort it with Radio london internally, its not our problem as licence payers. Its theirs.

Very good points; should get some reaction.

Possible alternative method, probably best in conjuctions with JGFC's ideas.  Write to the MP for Welling.

Ask if he / she could find out why our licence fees are being misused.  The MP will have to ask the Department for Culture, Media & Sport, as I dont think they are allowed to write directly to the BBC, but via the Department responsible.

Might cause a ripple, might not.

Dave

Someone with experience of writing to MP's complaining about this and that, could draft a letter and get people to sign it at the next match, then off to our local MP it goes, and the MP will HAVE to look into it.

Good idea Dogme

Here is draft 1

Please feel free to offer suggestions or advice etc

Obviously we will need JGFC to put his research with the two stations in, to give it somekind of background.

And we need the name of the MP - I live out of borough and have no idea who it is.

Anyway, enjoy

********************************************************************

Dear (name of MP)

As a lifelong supporter of your constituent football club, Welling United FC, I wonder if you could help our club with a problem we have been experiencing for the last few years.

It appears that Welling, the town, falls between the BBC coverage areas of Radio London and Radio Kent, with each station claiming that the other is responsible for coverage.Consequently, we the supporters of the club, feel that it is ignored by the one broadcaster that we feel should offer news, reports and publicity to all sports clubs, especially those at the smaller end of the market.

Supporters have contact the BBC directly, and have received a limited and somewhat poor response.

JGFC can you place details of your research at the end of the above para. - ta

Any help that you could offer us to increase our coverage and help provide a service to supporters would be greatly appreciated.

Yours sincerely

Name

Address 1

Address 2

etc

I can probably help explain some of this in the next few weeks with regard to the history of BBC London/GLR/Welling etc.  I'm currently ina  remote part of spain and only just catching up with the HMRC news. I've worked for the BBC for 13 years and that goes back to when there was a BBC South East region. The BBC maps linked in earlier posts are not defining any areas/broadcast regions - just illustrations of which site ou are on.

Matt Davison "The amount of coverage you get will depend on how well you are doing"

Weve lost 1 game, and are a 7th of the season gone and youve not done one game! Youve done live comms for Dartford, Dover and Ebbsfleet so far.BBC Essex and Surrey are doing live comms of Woking and Chelmsford a lot.

PULL YOUR FINGER OUT DAVISON! Welling are 6th . enough of the silly words. Cover the club.

Last week not having a reporter at Bromley for a top of the table local derby was a joke, & shows how the season wll pan out with their coverage, just the same four teams every week, plus the great Kent club Charlton, im sure when we play dartford on January 1st, they will want to build it up calling it a Kent Derby etc, & wanting to do on line commentary, i suggest the club just refuse them entry into the ground, they would only be backing Dartford anyway, & going back to what Davidson said a couple of weeks ago about having no budget to cover Welling, they have been happy paying reporters to cover Welling in previous years, when their favourites were in lower leagues.
