In response to the thread with Patsy, JGFC, and myself out of curiosity what events would you like to see put on IN the wings bar.

JGFC has put forward the following Ideas on a previous post please add to this if there is something else that comes to mind.

A Darts Exhibition
A Comedian
A Band
A Race Night
A Poker Night
A Games Night
A Sportsmans Evening
A Curry Night
Bingo?
Beer Festival
Talent Show for Bexley?
Night Classes

Please add and when the next supporters association meeting goes ahead they will have a good idea of what entertainments to go ahead and either book or lay on.

ps.. this is not for suggestions of what to put on but more of what would you be willing to pay and attend.

Si

The base of any future events must be to get people going in the bar.

Happy Hours, Raffles, Open Weekends, Sunday Lunch

Then a regular stream of events with some diversity.

People arent used to the bar being open or events (Other than the occasional rock gig) being on.

Get people using the place , then have flyers on tables in those plastic menu holders, posters on the walls. sell tickets in the bar and over the bar for events, obviously helps if people are using the gaff.

Diverse and well stocked bar helps aswell, cant have people going to events being restricted on what they want. This is where a manager or someone in charge has to run the bar seperate to the club so stock levels can stay acceptable, entertainment committee can report to the bar manager. Takes work away from Barrie too.

I strongly believe this should come about when the new supporters association is up and running and growing in numbers, theres a far bigger foundation if this is the case.

Great ideas, but, one thing is missing - the Hobbins aren't interested. You are pissing in the wind if you think that getting people/ local business's to come to PVR  whilst the status quo exists is laughable.

The hobbins must be interested every other club is. I am looking forward to the new constitution and the supporters association to see if either address points that will make a difference, i think the supporters can but things do have to change at the club or ... you are piissing in the wind

If the club cant maximise revenue streams via commercial activity and using the ground, why will supporters bust their balls and why will new blood come in (new fans/community/businesses)?

Weve had a lot of publicity and actions and implementation of this new constiution (is it coming?) will open a lot of doors.

If a club losing a bag a week cant take a bag over the jump (Dart team/Quiz team/ Weekly Events/Promotions/Sunday Lunch) there is no hope.

Erith open sunday lunch and put on music dont they? they get 12 fans and a dog turn up to games.

................  and if we keep losing money every season because the Hobbins can't / wont pay HMRC, where does that leave us?
They cheated/ lied - we lost 5 points - end of

I'm not sure we'll get the people turning out for events in our current set up. We have a pretty rundown/small clubhouse compared to Dartford, Chelmsford, Dover, even Erith & B. Word of mouth with people saying 'you ought to see Welling's clubhouse - great place to have a night out' - is just not going to happen. Advertise like mad but will people really fancy going to PVR? I think not unless it's a unique event you maybe can't get elsewhere or a quiz night that are popular across the country. Throw in the cost of a night out during a recession, the ground not that near a station, limited parking, low attendances and no official marketing/commercial department what can we do? To rely on the home fans attending events is also wrong to some degree - how many home fans will be into darts or a band night on top of already attending home games? If you get 10% of our home fans, that's still only 50 people. Like JGFC said Erith get outsiders to attend their clubhouse. That's the key - 10% of interested local people would be much higher than 50.

How do we attract people to our clubhouse? Advertise is one thing but the bar needs a complete overhaul to make it attractive and I mean complete redesign and structural work. With our current financial situation that's not going to happen. Catch 22 at the moment. Perhaps a loan with a business plan of return investment might work but who would lend us money at the moment? In my opinion the very least would be to level the bar if possible, run the bar along the left hand snug area, modernise the place (get rid of the wallpaper and carpet), install modern lighting to suit the various functions, new tables/chairs (just how old are the bench seats?), improve access (do we need double doors where they are?), improve the entrance lighting (when you turn up to evening functions it looks like an illegal drinking den), install disabled access/toilets and possibly extend the front section of the clubhouse - there must be 10 metres we could claim there. The current tea bar should be in the Erith corner freeing up space rather than have queues right next to the bar entrance. Shift the cars as well if we can get space in the pub or car front.

This isn't a pop at anyone who runs the events (you have my admiration) but after low attendances we need to ask why. If you took a wife, work colleague or someone who had never been to PVR to our clubhouse and ask them what they thought of it, I doubt it would be complementary.

For me the most urgent thing we need is to install Sky TV in the Club Bar. This would address JGFC's point above about getting more people in using the bar. Matt made a great point at the recent meeting about seeing around 20 Welling fans using The Nags Head before games because our Club Bar did not have Sky TV. I appreciate there is a cost involved here but even if those 20 fans in The Nags Head went to the Club Bar we would cover the Sky monthly costs ?

Also, I am looking forward to the details of the WUSA membership because if by being a member can ensure discounts on drinks at the bar, in the Club Shop (10 % ?) etc we would immediately see our Shop and Bar being used more.

Lou i think you will see a 10% off the shop thing with WUSA membership, maybe events but not over the bar.

Sky TV is prohibitively priced (over 5k a season i think) but Erith have it in their bar and are sub tenants so maybe we can ask them how much or see from sky if a "second" dish gets us a discount. How do they afford it and could their signal be wirelessly sent to the wings bar legally? surely its just like multi room?

Putting sky in will help and may cover costs but we have to use the bar more, put on more events and get people used to it being used and not liable to be turfed out at 6pm etc.

Some excellent posts from GaryH and Lou , just shows we have people with a bit of savvy and imagination and creativity.

Gary H has hit the nail on the head here. The downstairs bar and the executive lounge both require extensive renovation. We also need catering facilities rather than outside contractors (burger bar).

The reasons for this are obvious- increased matchday income, ability to put on better club events (as listed previously in this thread), more attractive entertaining facilities for sponsors, better facilities for functions (ie birthday parties, weddings etc).

This project is crucial for the survival of this club at the top end of non league football.

The problem is the cost. Dover's bar and facilities (the best i've seen at this level http://thecentrespot.net/) cost approx £200k. I reckon to renovate our facilities, to an adequate level, will cost a minimum of £50k ideally closer to £100k.

The club has no money, of course, and are losing money hand-over-fist. So the objective for the club should be (and has been) to look for new owners/investors. However, if buyers are put off by the club debt, might it be an idea for the club to set up a new company with holdings in the facilites, making it a more attractive investmant as they will not have exposure to the debt?

Either way, I don't think it would be a bad idea for the WUSA to get the ball rolling with regards to specification of design, architectural drawings , planning permission, quotes from contractors etc- then looking at finding the money. I believe this will also help in finding investment as it is taking the work away from the investor- they can see what they are buying into.
