Match Report
Welling United 1 - 0 Havant & Waterlooville
Ben Martin 60'

Welling United returned to winning ways on Saturday afternoon as they came through to grab a vital victory in a tight encounter against Havant and Waterlooville.

After going on a record breaking streak which concluded of 12 victories in-a-row, the Wings were shocked to see themselves coming into the game on the back of two straight defeats after suffering a late defeat at Dover Athletic from which they were 2-1 ahead at half time and then suffering a familiar fate by going down to a 2-1 loss at Sutton United.

Although it was a side which had more attack into it as opposed to the side who went down at Sutton, it was a game of very few attempts onto goal. Jack Obersteller controlled the left flank as he repeatedly showed his true skill as he demolised the left-midfield.

Although there were a few early scares provided towards Sam Mott's goal as corners were swung in, Havant were unable to find the net.

Martin and Acheampong held the defence together, as they had to cut off connection from the Havant & Waterlooville midfield to the attack with three cruical interceptions. A mistake on anyone of the interceptions may have seen the hosts fall behind.

Welling Captain Jamie Day found himself penalised for a foul and found himsel in the referee's notebook after kicking the ball away two minutes before half time.

It was a slow start to the second period as the ball was kept into the narrow midfield. In the 60th minute, a quick through ball was played into Kieran Highes-Mason on the right hand side which saw the wings have a four-on-one advantage. Hughes-Mason whiped a ball across goal, only to see John Main have his thumbled effort knocked out for a corner.

Main was given the "get out of jail" card as the corner fell to mounatinous Ben Martin who climbed the Havant defender and nodded the ball into the back of the net.

But yet again, Havant wasn't to be stopped as they forced a Class A save out of Sam Mott and an equally class clearance out of Acheampong as the Hawks pushed for an equaliser in the dieing stages of the game.

Four minutes were indicated of the Fourth Officials board. Three had passed before the referee had turned down a strong and obvious penalty which saw Hughes-Mason fall to ground after falling over the leg of a Havant defender.

The fans breathed a seigh of relief as the full-time whistle has blew, as three vital points help Welling keep pressure on promotion rivals Salisbury.

Salisbury had seen themselves win two nil at home to Billericay, who are still three points ahead of the Kent side but have played two additional games.

The Wings next game is at home to Farnborough on tuesday night. Make sure your there to cheer them on. COYW!

As usual can everyone please share (via the Facebook and twitter buttons) and comment on the Newsshopper article. This is invaluable publicity. We tend to get into the top 5 most shared articles but we need to start getting into the most commented section as well. It takes a minute to register with the Newsshopper website and even less leaving a short comment.

If you use the Facebook button, make sure you actually post it to your Facebook. Will be a good advert to your friends as family, which will help when you want to invite them to a game.

Like I've said before, the Newsshopper website gives us the opportunity to send out 1000's of interactive leaflets for FREE at the click of a button. Let's all make the most of this opportunity.

Unfortunately it currrently only has 4 comments. It only takes a minute to register with the Newsshopper site and just leaving a short comment saying how good the game was will make a huge difference.
