I remember after Welling last got promoted to the top level of non league football in the 80's I paid my first ever visit to PVR to watch a charity match just after the season had ended, can't for the life of me remember who was playing but that's not the point of what I'm rambling on about. For some strange reason I visited the club shop and bought a Welling United metal badge....well it was a Welling United sticker on a round metal badge. I wasn't particularly a wings supporter at that time but because of the excellent season they had just had I began to look for their results and continued to do so for the next 25 years or so until I paid my second ever visit to PVR in 2010 for the bank holiday game against dover. Like so many people these days I had become bored with the big time premier league and decided on that bank holiday that I was going to do more than just look for Wings results from now on and in the last 3 years have become a regular attendee at home and occasionally away. Welling have reignited my love of football in that time and I just wish I hadn't left it 25 years between visits before. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that this bloody badge has just fallen out of the back of a drawer that I've just been clearing out....first time I've seen it since 1986! I'm assuming its a sign from a higher level that the Wings are about to be celebrating something! Either that or it's a sign that I really should tidy my drawers more often.....
The charity match at the end of that season was a George Best celebrity eleven. However, George Best didn't turn up! Fish from Marillion played, as did Mo Johnston; the latter was on standby for Scotland's world cup squad and came in for some pretty rough treatment during the match as I recall.
Can anyone else remember which other celebrities played that day?
Thanks for that Moo,I knew somebody would help me out with that one. I do seem to remember there was a rather portly gentleman played the second half I think? I'm afraid that's the best I can do.
Very good Gary, reminds me that I also bought a copy of what I think was called wings review all those years ago. That will probably fall out of tomorrows draw that I tidy. Also, was that one of those metallic badges that I've been hearing about at the end?
