Some of the things we need to do don't involve rocket science.
Advanced publicity must improve.
The PA system is a joke...surely a nightclub sponsor could come up with a couple of decent speakers.
Not making arrangements to open the Erith stand bar beggars belief.
Half-way line floodlighting must be barely legal at this level.
Some covered terracing once the nonsense of segregation sets in...yes there is a cost here...and it won't happen...pity we couldn't salvage something from one of the defunct grounds in London.
The progress on the picth has been fantastic. However it needs to go hand in hand with progress off it. 3 of the 5 things mentioned could be sorted by the Bank Holiday. I'd be impressed if one happened!
Survival means sustainability applied in a common sense sort of pro-active fashion.
PA System - Yes I agree with you and 'probably' the easiest to do
Erith bar etc....Not up to us is it....If they dont want to play ball then nothing we can do
Floodlighting...I didnt think it was that bad actually - I think it is fine for this level
Covered terracing....need about £150k per end and that is IF we were to get planning permission....We have not got that money and there are more pressing needs for me...like sorting the terracing
I think to cover the terracing at either end is at least 500k I believe. The clubs first priority is to sort out the terracing and to pay back other debts before covered ends are looked at.

I can't believe that some of the covered terracing we have seen on our travels would be even a fraction of that, but I agree that the club has more pressing things to worry about and so we need to look at either ways of financing it if its to become a reality. I also heard some years ago that there might be planning permissions issues.
I think publicity is the main issue, as the attendance on Saturday showed. Without decent gate receipts the other issues have no chance of ever being resolved. At the moment we can also capitalise on Charlton and Millwall's current poor run.
Okay I've previously mentioned social networking, which is a very useful free publicity tool, but on it's own is very limited.
One possible idea off the top of my head is maybe having a pile of leaflets/flyers in the club shop on match days so people can pick up a few to leaflet or hand to local shops and pubs to display. If someone does take a few leaflets/flyers then it might be an opportunity to register them as a volunteer.
I know there's a 'volunteer' tab on the site but it appears to be some way off completion, so the above might an ideal alternative for the mean time.
Another easy way to increase gates is to simply get more friends and family to come along. If everyone brought one extra friend or family member to each game, then that's the attendance doubled in an instance. I know it's stating the obvious but I've certainly found it alot more easier to get my mates to come along to the Cambridge game. In the BSS my mates used to think of it is a 'one man and his dog' league. Where as this year we've got teams like Luton, Grimsby and Wrexham adding alot more weight to what is effectively League 3.
Also are we still doing the schools promotion, which we did last season? And don't say 'WDYPTC'...
What work from the community trust? If they do anything nothing gets told to the fans or community.
Steve Sutherland? Do you know what his job is? He would charge and with respect what they did years ago has no bearing or benefit in this day and age. They had it easy back then to draw people in. You want to ask a club how they did it... Ask Lewes crowds grew over night when they went CIC.
Simples, we have to hit OUR community with info and pester them and tell them who we are and where we are, As a Grimsby fan said.... when asking people where the ground is, six people he asked DIDNT KNOW.
It really isnt rocket science and its not expensive to print 10,000 professional looking double page flyers, the hard part is the logistics of delivering them. Companies do provide this service though.
To get new customers you have to let them know you exist, we need to stop looking at being clever and cutting corners and blanket the local community, there are no shortcuts and as long as the leaflet is delivered on its own.. ie not with other crap or in a paper... even if they walk straight to the bin they will have read it briefly and be aware of us. I cant see a downside. But im fed up with suggesting it. For me.. its the only way to raise awareness that will have a positive effect now and in the future.
Make the content of the leaflet attractive and with an offer or two and you only need 20 people to turn up now or in the future off the back of it to cover costs of the leaflets. (Cant we let pure have a quarter/eighth of a page, they may want to help fund the exercise or pay their pr girls to deliver it in pure merchandise as they will be being advertised to thousands of residents too if we include them on the leaflet.)

yes I do know what Steve does, I know him and was speaking to him only last month and yes you could ask Lewes or any other club, it does not matter who, the point I am making is lets speak to experienced people or clubs and learn from what they have done and adopt the things that we can do which we think is relevant and and are affordable to our club.
CAFC did do a lot of what is being suggested posters. flyers etc, but they also set up their community scheme which is still going today.
As for the work of the WUCT you answered my point "what do they do?" the club and the WUCT need to work closer together to engage with the community including the fan's and especially the youngsters in the community who are the next generation of Wings fans. We also need them to promote their work within the community and this is something the council maybe interested to help with.
To me, they need to work closer with the club for example CAFC: Chiiid goes to summer school via their Community Trust at the end of the week a player or past player goes along presents a medals and a goodie bag of CAFC stuff ie posters etc, - a free ticket offer is given out to the child mum or dad takes them to a game.
Our WUCT could run and probably does runs summer schools ( funds for them) the club gives them the items for the goodies bags including flyers for the game, and a ticket offer for said child parent and child come to game? but to make it work WUC|T and the club need to work together.
The WUCT also has the ideal vehicle to promote the summer schools each year the damson festival is always on before the schools break up, hence why Millwall and CAFC community attend.
And this year if the club and WUCT work together they cam take the trophy into the primary schools
This is just one strategy amongst others that could be used if everyone works together.
Yes Moo is right we have come leaps and bounds since the arrival of Paul but he cannot not do it on his own or without a budget. and Hales out point about the signs and bus stop is valid and should be investigated further.

Correct tickets initiatives were dome by Rick Everett and I do not actually recall giving Steve the credit for tickets - I merely suggested that we could learn from that part of their history and perhaps learn from their experience and suggested Steve as he was around in that period of time.
During that time they knew the had to win the fans back and had several initiatives to do that - all I am suggesting simply is an option could be speaking to pepple who was around at that time and ask what they did as a club.

Paul gets the posters and flyers for match day fixtures designed and printed as he does now but a few more printed specifically to be delivered by WUCT .
Pronged attack all working together, - posters flyers campaign, via volunteers new shoppers etc, same posters givem to WUCT and they give out at schools,
Come half term and summer initiatives WUCT ask Paul to use his contacts to design quality posters flyers to help promote their scheme's (from their Budget) and in return they give out any goodie bags including match day flyers to the course goers.

Waste of money putting flyers and ads in newsshopper. No one reads it, not everyone gets it delivered flyers go in the bin in one handful. Single flyer in each letter box delivered on its own = win
Get bang for your buck not do something for the sake of it imo that wont work.
Whos going to pay for goodie bags, i think we need to attract people of all ages, families, stidents, retired people, not just put a lolly , a balloon and sticker in loads of 8 years old carrier bags who all probably have Charlton or man united shirts and wouldnt come.
I think we are getting there with no expense with schools by having them play on the pitch at half time, if that continues this season. Concentrate on the local residents imo and bang out some offers for cheap tickets or family tickets to get them on once and try and hook them. We want the people who are on our doorstep.

No its saying that advertising in newsshoper and goodie bags wont work. We did the newsshopper waste of money.
If you want people to come, then advertise to THEM. Most direct way is through their letterbox.
Once good point made in this thread. Sign posts to Welling United FC, Bexley Council should do that, most other conference clubs have them in the local area. People say oh we arent great with the council.. but they have not done a poxy thing in 40 years for PVR or their residents and its their ground. You could write what they have done on a grain of rice and have space for a joke which would be quite apt.

I think we need to take a leaf out of CAFC, when they moved to Crystal Palace they alienated a generation of local fans, and had to win them back on their return to the Valley, one of the things the did was make the community programme a part of that strategy, For example their summer school programme had visits from players and also free tickets and goodie bags for the children.
They also had other strategies and a small budget, the way forward for me is a few representatives of the club talk to Steve Sutherland from CAFC and ask how they did it, and take the affordable ideas on board.
I would suggest the board need to look at ways of enhancing the work of the community trust and help them promote the club for match day experiences.
Three things could help here. Firstly no street signs to Welling United Football club? Even Blackheath Rugby club have these about a mile from their ground.
Secondly as I have mentioned before why is the bus stop outside not called Welling United Football club or Park view road stadium rather than the Guy?
Lastly adverts (I know this would cost) and fixtures at Welling railway station would help, think of all the people who pass through on a daily basis. I live near Beckenham and Bromley have adverts for their facilities (bar etc/training) which must help them bring in income.
However none of the improvements can make much of a difference if we have no relationship with Bexley council and I suspect that is not going to happen with the current owners in place.
Some of the things we need to do don't involve rocket science.

New season, but same old problems with not moving forward (off the pitch) as a club in alot of area's. " /> Each season these same points come up time after time.
Some of the points WB mentioned above do take alot of money to correct - ie the covered terracing debate, but others as the age old point of opening the E&B bar doesn't take alot. Its funny how it can always be opened on the Charlton games, yet not others? Why does the club not have meetings with the correct people (if they have'nt already) & then let us know what the situation is? So atleast this arguement can be put to bed once & for all. But saying that surely there is not a strong enough argument against this?????? Money is there to be made!
Also, don't get me started on as to why we are not running our OWN catering outlets in the ground!!!! Chips anyone, no sorry don't do them here! TOTAL JOKE! Money to be made & yet we let these things slip season after season.
There was a review in yesterdays NL paper on us (Diary of a ground hopper), which we didn't impress them to much (no surprises there). Its got to be worth WUSA & especially the club looking into their very valid points? One area we did score well on was in regard to our programme, so theres a positive.
Summing up, if the quality that is now offered on the field was matched by the facilities off the field, then I am sure both home & away supporters would be encouraged to come back time & time again.

I agree that there's more that can be done, but I think the commercial side of the club has come on leaps and bounds in the last year or so (thanks to Paul). We've massively increased the number of sponsors. Paul has also done some great work with Kobe Designs on match flyers, etc., but I agree that these could be distributed more widely; for a club of our resources this'll inevitably mean using volunteers.
Paul - if you need any help distributing flyers then I'll do what I can.

take out starting a political party to stand for local elections and running coaches from Kent
We could replicate at a lower scale what CAFC did /do But I believe to make it work the club needs to speak to Paul/ Wusa and WUCT and come up with a plan of action to promote the club for a season and allocate a starting up budget,
ie: Paul gets the posters designed WUSA help by asking for volunteers to help Paul distribute, WUCT helps promote through the Schools and it community activities, The club allocates a funds to promote it activities.
ok we put flyers through letterboxes, but who pays for the printing everything costs money, and are you asking people to give up their time to put these through letterboxes,
Speaking from a schools background something that worked well and is easier is to run a small schools tournament in the name of Welling United. I have taken children to one at Ebsfleet for the past 3 years and they have always worked well and got children interested. Liam Daish is always there and although the kids don't know him they are always excited when I explain who he is....they also send a coach down to school to work with the 10 kids prior to the tournament for a one off session. Piece of cake to organise- I organise our area competition every year and it really doesn't need much organising.

Nice to see Wings63 pipe up when people are having pops.
10,000 double sided a5 colour leaflets £150 I would say thats a good deal. Delivering it? As ive said before we have a community scheme who could head it up or ask for volunteers or a company that distributes leaflets could be hired.
If its not worth a few hundred pound to hit every local household, no worries just carry on as normal but then discussions are pointless on how to improve crowds and community ties. For me community isnt having 10 under 18s sides playing.

The PA system is not that difficult but will cost money.
I've made a few enquiries but we're probably looking at a new outdoor weatherproof mains socket, new speakers, new amplifier, new cabling, maybe microphone etc. Ideally cabling across under the pitch during the close season to get speakers in the new stand.
Quite a specialist industry so I doubt sponsorship/donations will help with getting the costs down.
No its saying that advertising in newsshoper and goodie bags wont work. We did the newsshopper waste of money.

We owe the Council a five figure sum of money, good luck getting them to agree to do anything at the moment.
And re: your point GaryH - PR system, yes agreed, but it generates no financial return. For me the bar is the priority, any money spent on improving that is recovered with improved takings in the coming weeks/months.
Im talking about the best part of 40 years. Theyve done nothing.
Please list all the council have done for us since 1977 or all the improvements they have made or grants or donations made.
and.. the bar a priority over health and safety? Give me strength.
thanks in advance.
Oh I agree Tom, they have done naff all, but getting that to change in the foreseeable future is not going to happen.
Health and Safety and the PR system are not linked in anyway, unless you read the Daily Mail. What incident would need to happen for a PR system to make the difference between life and death, unless by Health and Safety we are really talking paranoia and obsessive worrying. Accidents will happen.
There are a million things that could be done to improve the ground and the club in general, and the PR system is one of them. Given the option, given WUFC is a business and a business losing money on a weekly basis, between investing in something that will generate a return and something that won't, the only viable option is to do something bringing a prompt return, or there will be no club - and you and I both know we have discussed that privately before.
Allegedly, we owe lots of money to various people, including the Council. If you really think that with the incumbent management you are going to see changes that will help us, then you are mistaken. Same old subject for years. If it wasn't for the supporters, Welling United would have gone a couple of years ago. If rumours are true and the club was approached for a takeover by the consortium that has now taken over Ebbsfleet, ask yourself why it wasn't a viable offer. The supporters have kept this club alive and kicking. If you had a 100 WUSA members on the board, it wouldn't make any difference at all. The Mushroom effect springs to mind.

If we ever get the chance of a home televised game then that should be the biggest special offer game ever, for seeing a well populated PVR on TV would perhaps be the best publicity of all. Would need a bit of pro-activity here though!
I cannot believe that the bar situation is beyond sorting.
With the bar just get them to pour out pints in plastic cups that can be quickly given out - don't pour out 100s but say 20-30 as it will speed things up and more people will be served and have the bar staff pour out more if needed or to serve other drinks
All good when just giving out drinks but what about if people do not have the correct money change needs to be given then some people want other things rather than drink or a different drink to beer it still takes up time
Absolutely,. knock down the bar and build a new one with council money or get the council to spend £7 million on a ground for you, give you the ground with two new bars. Problem solved.
Works for other clubs.
