Halifax seem to have the right idea, turning down offers of £100K and £150K for striker Lee Gregory. Looks like they could pick up around £250K in the end. To bridge the money gap in this league players need to be on longer contracts...but is this a risk that Welling cannot afford to take...or is it one that Welling cannot afford not to take?
If you're comfortably in the upper half of the league and can offer two/three years knowing you won't get relegated then fine, for the middle half and the bottom half, its a financial risk that can't be taken.
Rare a non league player will get 100k+ these days. Most have agents and will get release clauses put in place for higher placed clubs. Can't see many players at Welling signing more than a year as they will hopefully be ambitious and want to move to a higher level. Doubt the club would want to give long contracts either - lose form or get a serious injury then it would really impact our budget.
