Very encouraged by what I have seen in the two pre-season games I have attended against Charlton and QPR on Saturday. Good to see the manager trying out different formations so that we can hopefully adapt if/when we change during the season.
Hopefully the keeper problems are a thing of the past as we now have a big commanding keeper - I was impressed on Saturday with the way he came out of his area more than once to clear the danger when required. We have pace to burn at full back and I quite like the 4-2-3-1 formation although I am not sure two big lumps in the holding midfield positions is the best combination. The two wide players are different but also more than useful - L'Ghoul is a joy to watch at times but I have also been impressed with Mccallum going forward and getting back defensively as well. Jebb was rightly named man of the match and his set piece delivery could be the source of a few goals this season. Mills has looked a handful when playing against us and we can mix our game up as he is good in the air and on the floor as well. Not sure if he needs another out and out striker with him up top but he played the lone striker role well at the weekend.
Before we get too excited the last two victories have been against Under 23 sides who, while they are fit and fast, do not offer the same problems that we might get in a league game. I m not sure our attacking players will get so much room and physically they are well short of what we will face in National South.
Some interesting decisions for the manager when he eventually whittles the squad down to 18 after the friendlies this week, particularly in respect of whether to play two up front, which centre back combination to opt for and also the best formation in midfield. With one or two tweaks here and there is no reason why we should not be targeting the play offs with the squad we are assembling.
Well put, I slightly disagree about the two in midfield...I wouldn't want to come up against them and they give us a very physical presence.
Jebb must be causing Mr King a huge headache, Kissock would of been signed to play where jebb did yesterday and already jebb is a completely different player to last season. Whether that's due to style of play or the way he's being managed who knows...but it's good to see.
Great problem to have...If we have a squad of 18 players who we are happy to play in any combination then we are very lucky and a strong outfit.....the true answer starts soon....Bring on Saturday
