Just like last seasons remarkable 3-3 thriller, Eastbourne continue to lose quite healthy leads this season, including against No Eurostar Utd and Bath (3-1 up at half time, lost 4-3).

I've never seen Welling play well on the Priory Plastic but fingers crossed tonight.

I thought originally the ref over reacted by red carding Warren, but checking the rules about conduct by team officials it is clear:

SENDING OFF

Sending-off offences include (but are not limited to):

  • delaying the restart of play by the opposing team e.g. holding onto the ball, kicking the ball away, obstructing the movement of a player

Players get yellow carded for this, officials get red carded.

But 5th in the table now, now three points off Havant in second, who we play in our next league match, so exciting times!

Great win. Very hard fought 3pts. Its fantastic to win 5-0 at home but to follow it up against a team in good form and away from home is better. Thank god for the new board and the manager his staff and the players this year. Effort being shown everywhere. Such a different vibe around WUFC. Fantastic commentary again from Nigel. Best commentary Ive heard from any Non league site.

Excellent win and commentary. If Feeney got a red and it slowed the game or wasted a minute then Im happy with that.
Good to hear the Welling fans on the radio

This is like the time we got promoted from the Southern League in 1985-86. The stats are the same P8 W5 D1 L2. Now all we have to do is win the next 32 games, draw 5 and only lose one, which is feasible. Mind you, we will still finish behind Ebbsfleet, and I may be getting ahead of myself, but dreaming is good

Webbedfeet are closing in on our record of 12 wins on the bounce. Someone needs to stop them. They have now got to play Dover,Hungerford,Oxford,Taunton to equal that record. Then Cheshunt to beat it. Looks like the record could go

Eastbourne had all the better chances, we were lucky to get away with some of their poor finishing. Nicked it - all good signs.

Indeed exciting times. However remember H&W play tomorrow so unless there is an upset I think they will be 6 points ahead of us. Hopefully we can get a massive crowd at PVR for next two games to back the team.

That was backs to the wall stuff as soon as we scored.
Very resolute in defence.
Even when we were giving away corner after corner, never thought they would score.
Thought the only way Eastbourne would get a goal was from open play.
That in itself is a credit to Wellling on the effort they must put in on the training pitch with regards to set piece defending.
Good side Eastbourne. Not many teams will get a result there.

The progress this season has been remarkable, I live close to the Welling training area, and often hear them hard at work training, and it makes one realise just how much hard work goes on out of sight of match days, so I am delighted for Warren and the guys all that hard work is paying off. Ebbsfleet have had a big head start on us in experience, as they retained 15 players from last season, whereas we retained 4 players, but Warren has done an amazing job at getting all the players to settle down so quickly.

After our first two results of a draw and loss we were in the bottom 4, but that stupid 4-2 defeat to Worthing was a turning point for the team, as clearly everyone in the team realised from it the things we had done wrong defensively all over the pitch in that game, cut those things out in subsequent games, and since then we have played 6 times, won 5, scored 14 and conceded 6. Eastbourne was a perfect outcome, scoring, without conceding. That football intelligence from the players, of learning so quickly, is great to watch, as we have a really interesting mix of very experienced players, along with some with less than 50 appearances who have very quickly caught up with the demanding fast pace of this League. It is great we are getting results against challengers for play off spots, if Eastbourne had won yesterday they would have been equal on points with us, but we won so they are 6 points behind. Similarly if Oxford had beaten us they would be 2 points clear of us, but we won so are 4 points ahead of them. Game on for Welling!

A hard fought victory and a good result. I thought first half was pretty even although they did have the better of the chances, second and we definitely started better, deserved to take the lead and really needed a second to put the game to bed. The last 15 mins we were really up against it due to them bombarding our box with crosses but we held on. We definitely need to address to constantly giving away stupid free kicks as eventually it will cost us. The free kick in injury time just outside the box was in a prime location and luckily it was put over the bar so a let off. It certainly was a fiesty game ,I thought thier player should've been sent off for going through Stephan Payne which resulted in a 25+ man melee plus our manager being asked to leave for something really silly was a disappointment. Can't remember exactly how many cards were given to us last night but we need to cut it out otherwise the fines will start coming in and players will be suspended and thats the last thing we need when trying to build momentum. As for Radio Wing's, thank you for all the kind comments on here and on other social media platforms, we had over 300 people tuned in last night with messages coming in from various different countries..amazing

Conceding stupid free kicks was the Achilles heel that cost Peter Taylor his job as manager for Welling, as we kept giving away stupid free kicks on the edge of our box, they would score from a header from the free kick, Peter Taylor would then say in an interview we have to stop conceding soft goals, and then the team changed nothing, as we had learned nothing, so we kept conceding stupid free kicks, from which the opposition scored.

I get the sense Warren quickly spots these mistakes and (unlike Peter Taylor) gets the players to understand them, and so cut them out. From the games I have seen this season there have been few silly free kicks conceded in dangerous areas, though it sounds as though we temporarily slipped back into that last night.

The problem with conceding goals from silly free kicks is that it is giving one's team a handicap of in effect giving the opposition a goal head start.

Radio Wings commentary is so helpful for keeping in touch with away games, what I like is how unbiased and accurate the commentary is, if we are playing well it says so, if we are playing badly it says so, so one gets a really accurate match report, not one of the silly self protective biased views like, "we lost 5 - 0, but it was only because they had five moments in the match, but we were as good as them everywhere on the pitch throughout the match and deserved to get something from the game." And I do love Mark Doig's angry screams in the background at referees! I don't know if there is scope to do a podcast of the whole match commentary as it seems a shame it is only available during the match, and then disappears.

The way I see it at the moment is that Ebbsfleet look increasingly good for automatic promotion, though they could possibly be in a false position as they have played lots of easy games, so maybe this season we can be runners up, and hopefully win the play offs. But if we dont go up this season, we would be in great shape to go up next year as long as we dont have too much player turnover which has destabilised us for the past few seasons, as this exciting team can only get better.

My other team is West Ham, and I was there for the magical 85-86 season, when the Boys of 86 finished third, in with a chance of winning the title until the end of the season, and I see such similar qualities in this season's Welling squad, players that are playing so well they automatically pick themselves, understanding each other, tons of skill, hard work, attacking as a team, defending as a team, two dangerous strikers, creative midfield, solid defence individually and collectively and a manager that knows exactly what is needed to be successful and pushes the players hard to fulfil their potential. That season with West Ham was unforgettable, but this season with Welling has the same potential, and is just as exciting to watch. Being a football manager can be a thankless task, as everyone is telling the manager what one should be doing, and sometimes the advisers know what they are on about, sometimes not, but everybody will agree Warren has done an amazing job at attracting players to a team that had finished bottom two in the last two seasons, but making them realise that was no longer relevant, as he was now managing and the players had nearly totally changed compared to the last two seasons, and it is so nice to see the players faith being rewarded so soon, top 5 already after 8 games, 8 points off the top, with 38 games (114 points) still to play.

I do have the match commentary recordings saved after every game. Not sure how to make it available as a podcast but I'll look into it

A great start to the season.

The season is a long grind and Warren and the team must carry on the siege mentality throughout the remaining fixtures.

I too was a West Ham fan in the mid 1950's through to the late 1970's.

I remember the European Cup Winners Cup Final game at Wembley 19 May 1965 at 7.45 against TSV Munchen 1860.

Alan Sealey scored two.

I was there.

Moore, Hurst, Peters, Ronnie Boyce, Ken Brown and Jim Standen were strong characters.

Every club, including ours, needs those values.

As an old member of the Chicken Run I have great memories from past matches that will remain in my memory always.

Dave

It sounded like a very good intriguing game, but also good to nick a 0-1 win and taking home all 3 points. I hope we get a big crowd this Saturday home to Fisher and H&W FC, but also theres a song that we should start singing. Woke up this morning feeling fine, Ive got Welling on my mind Feeneys playing the way Welling should oh yeah something tells me Im into something good

I really hope we can keep this form going as it really feels like this team can go places this season. This next 3-4 league games will give us a better idea of where we are at in my opinion with fixtures such as Havant & Waterloo and Ebbsfleet upcoming.

Im looking forward to Saturday in what will hopefully be the start of a little cup run!

We need to take the results, confidence and work ethic 100% into the Fisher game and not be complacent. They will be right up for it. Really up for it.

I remember seeing our old squad in the Wings Bar before they travelled to Sheppey - laughing, joking etc and look what happened.

Different now I know but cant take chances.

Fisher look to be a team still sorting themselves out in the early stage of the season, bottom of the table, but competitive, just needing a little improvement, with a couple of 1 - 1 draws, and 0 - 1 defeats, and now a 1 - 2 defeat, so tight games, scoring 3 in 5 games, but only conceding 6, and just not getting the edge in their games. So although a team bottom of the league two divisions below us sounds an easy win for us, they are more competitive than that place suggests. It will be really interesting to see what team Warren puts out, a really pleasing thing this season has been how players like Chi and Aaron have come back into the team and performed excellently, so shows the depth of the squad Warren has built up since last season, as some teams have a great first 11, but are screwed if they have to play other squad members, but we have real depth, waiting to be given a chance to show what they can do.
