This is a great initiative, I am really looking forward to the evening. It is amazing to think Warren was playing international football as recently as 10 years ago, and moved into management and brings such a high level of knowledge. Warren has shared his thoughts with me a couple of times, and I have learned from each time. Last season while we had the relegation battle he told me he was looking to bring more quality to the team, and that word "quality" has really stuck in my mind, as I can see that is what he is all about, my other team is West Ham, and Moyes is all about being defensive and opening up late in a game and hoping to get a late winner, whereas Warren is about quality and playing positive football.
I have also chatted with a couple of players before kick off, and seen them interviewed, and we have some very clever players who understand football, I was particularly impressed with Chi, who shows a really good tactical understanding when interviewed, and maybe a meet the players evening could happen, as they are such a great bunch of guys. I had asked one of the players why he had joined Welling, and his answer was so interesting, so having an insight into the other players would be interesting and fun.
A big thanks to Paul Whitehead, as I had dropped him some suggestions on possible infrastructure improvements (better signage showing outside the stadium so passers by and bus passengers can clearly see when we have matches coming up, getting Warren and players on longer contracts so we can have some stability after far too many changes of manager and players over past years, and how to increase the number of people knowing about this forum, suggesting we have a text box in the programme saying along the lines "For general chats with our fans, the latest match news and team updates visit the official Welling United fans forum at wellingunited.activeboard.com/f165363/welling-united-fans-forum/"); and Paul kindly took the time to talk through my suggestions over the phone and had some great insights to share, as there are always lots of complicated things that the fans wont know about, so great to see how well the new board are progressing and fixing the club, to the extent that unbeaten Ebbsfleet feel lucky to get a point against a 9 player Welling.
Just to confirm that the event is open to all supporters, whether in WUSA or not.
If anyone can not attend the evening, could you email me any questions via deanshulver@gmail.com please and we will try to get them answered on the night.

Guys, don't take the 4/5 odds, I am not available for it, the only job I will take is the Liverpool one, I am just waiting for the call from Jurgen! Though I may be available for England after the World Cup so I can pick Bowen for England.
I reckon this is all part of Warren finding out about how the players respond, he's seen what they are like when things go their way earlier on, now he's finding out what they are like when things are tougher. But it is also a test of Warren, so interesting to see how he changes things to fix what isn't working at the moment. We are now a third of the way through the season, so enough games by now to see what works and what doesn't. I've always liked 3 at the back this season, but now think it's not working for the players we have, so, in my book at least, best to go 4 at the back, and think that can turn things back our way.
This meet the manager is an odd timing, as on the one hand we aren't doing that well with some recent performances, but then on the other hand despite that we are still just two points off sixth spot.
I was reconsidering going, as I am really not in the mood for a toxic session, but then again it is set up by WUSA, so should be positive, as after all, everyone there wants Welling to succeed, so it should be positive, so will probably go. Hopefully Jamison will introduce himself, so I can meet my rival for the Liverpool and England management jobs.
Awe no, only reason I'd take Liverpool job is to oversee them being a few leagues lower. If Jay Simpson can play football then so can a few in the stands last night so maybe we'll do that instead.
I skipped off work early last night to go watch that debacle, I won't be doing the same Friday so Tuesday it will have to be.
A fan here has put his finger on the issue by saying Warren has read the room wrong, as all clubs have their individual standards, expectations and anyone joining will take a while to recognise them. A week ago there was a feel good factor after the 1 - 1 draw against top of the table Ebbsfleet when we were down to 9 men, but the 1 - 5 defeat to Dartford couldn't have come at a worse time before the meet the manager. I was telling my son to have a look at the forum as there are so many sudden critical posts, and my son understood exactly what is going on, saying to me "Dam, but to be honest losing 5-1 to your rivals would make the fans MAD" and Warren didn't read the room at all when dismissing this as just another game, and adding completely irrelevant comparisons of bigger matches he has been involved with. What matters most is what is happening now with Welling suddenly repeatedly losing heavily, and fixing it asap, not how other totally unconnected teams did in the past. I don't buy the thing about our players not being up to it as we are non-league, as our opponents are non-league too.
There are some things Warren needs to have a long hard look at himself about, and rather than be a keyboard warrior here I will make the necessary points in person at the meeting, as that will be more constructive.
What I am annoyed about is the best of us is fantastic, at times this season in some of our games we have played the best football I have seen any team play, as invariably if we lose it is not that the other side are better than us, it is just that we keep making stupid mistakes, and not learning quickly enough to cut them out. So already we have the talent, but are not consistently getting it out of the players.
We are a third of the way through the season, a good time to review things, it would be good to have another meet the manager after another third of the season, around February, to assess progress after this meeting, as November and December is a theoretically easy run or games, while January and February looks a really tougher set of fixtures, and hopefully by February the current problems will have been fixed, possibly by going 4 at the back to build a more solid base from the back, and accepting we dont have the right players just now to play 3 at the back.
Despite appearances I like Jamison, as I always like people who say what they think, for better or for worse, so as Jamison can't make the meeting in person a reminder that one of the earlier posts said fans who can't make the meeting can submit questions by e mail. Well done again to all for setting up the meeting, it may not be what was originally expected, and we are still just 2 points off 6th spot, so far from hopeless, but Warren should reverse the recent trends so ideas on how to do that will be handy all round, and help Warren read the room.

Thought Warren came across well and was open and honest.
Finally saw the face behind the Johnny Hartley name. He didn't disappoint... rambling on for two or 3 minutes, without asking a question before he was cut off!

Cheers Polo, I actually agree, as I was trying to string too many points together without them leading to a clear question. I guess it reflects my having worked remotely for the past couple of years, so not used to talking in groups like that. But I then made concise questions afterwards, as did everyone, and was really pleased we all had the opportunity to do that, as I really like how knowledgeable Welling fans are and I learned a lot, and am sure everyone else did too. Before the meeting it felt Warren hadn't read the room of how Welling fans were thinking, but the meeting showed Warren, the Board and WUSA are in touch, and showed us problems they inherited they are working very hard to overcome to give the fans a successful team.
So a really informative meeting, it showed just how complicated managing a team is at this level, as off the field one has to manage players, fans and board and media expectations, and on the field you have to get results. So the transformation of horizons for the club, which had been bottom two for the past two seasons, and now has been top half of the table for four months this season, is a great turn around, as has been increased attendances everyone in the club is working to deliver.
A formation is only as good as the players playing it, and it feels as though the back 3 formation wasn't working as well as hoped in the last 9 games where we scored once 7 times, and not scored twice, and conceded 18, compared to the first 12 games where we scored 22 and only conceded 12. But Warren suggested he is considering a change of formation, to change unexpected recent results, and the different formation he suggested sounds really promising. And that is football, you try something, hopefully it works, if it doesn't then you try something else.
On my way out of the meeting I thanked Paul for the meeting, and said it was just what we needed. It will be great if we can have another one in the new year, as I was worried before the meeting it would be people just ranting at Warren, but we have fans who have followed the club for 30 years or more, and really understand football, so had great constructive questions about signings, player discipline, captaincy, finances, player turnover and showed the link between the club and the fans. Well done to everyone who attended!

JH. I presume you are not aware that meet the manager evenings are regular events. There was nothing new or radical about having one this season. Usually there is only one per season So I very much doubt there will be another in the new year. Love your enthusiasm and your right to have your say on this forum but can you keep it short and to the point. I have to admit I get about two lines into your posts and then lose the will to live. Hence I am missing what you are trying to say. No offence.

I think this was my point last week...
As for last night im glad a good time was had, only thing id say is MG seemed to turn into Paul Mckenna on similar sort of evenings and we all know how that ended up!
Let's hope we finally start seeing some words put into action on the pitch.
Perhaps someone could kindly fill in the blanks of just a couple of notes I've received of the evening.
1) If feeney doesn't sign the players who is?
And given that the signings are not good enough and 2 of them quite frankly embarrassing is there a plan to change this? And was this questioned last night?
2) Why does it matter that he played against and beat England? He was on the pitch 11mins and they were already 1 0 up btw, but anyhow why do these things always matter in every interview etc?
Taylor didn't tell us he managed England every week, past is the past, maybe needs to focus on now.
3) 'He always plays long ball and that won't change' so I've heard. So what was the reaction to this or what does he expect to gain out of this given how its gone so far?
4) If we can't go up because of the ground, which we all know anyway I should think. Why are we spending a load of money on players who probably won't be around next season?
Why not try a build a squad that will be with us a few seasons and then compete properly, as many other teams in our league have done and have squads who have been together 2 or 3 seasons.

It usually works better if you ask the questions before the meeting rather than after it..??
Well was more trying to see if these points were elaborated on a bit more, given I didn't know he wasn't signing the players and unfortunately was at work how could it have been asked?
How could I have known that Warren would again make the irrelevant point of playing for NI 20 years ago?
So really only the part about the ground/squad comes into relevance there.
A productive meeting, although not one that has changed my opinions on the manager and his methods. I didn't think Feeney was the right man in the summer, and I still don't, however it was good to get some insight and he has hinted that changes will be made to the tactics and squad which is also positive. He may have bought himself some time with the fans, however we have two games coming up against teams lower down the table and if we don't perform we will be right back to where we were on Tuesday night, except the voices calling for his head will be far louder. Let's wait and see, but if we don't improve measurably then I can't see Warren being here by the new year.

I think there was a comment about trying to retain a core nucleus and cut and add to that. However, I hope the ground issue does not prevent the desire to finish high as possible and be looking at that playoff pack as a target.
I think there needs to be a consistent message. Feeney says to be competitive is the aim. However heard club officials outside telling supporters we want/will make play offs?.
Understandably the improvements made as well as some of the theatre around signings made also suggest pushing nearer the top.
One thing from the evening that stood out in my mind and should be at the forefront of all the #FeeneyOut campaigners is what Paul said regarding the club last season, If Warren didnt keep us up last season the club wouldnt have survived to which everyone in the room clapped and cheered. We all know the football fan has a short memory but we would have a lot less to do, worry and moan about on a Saturday and Tuesday if Warren didnt show up with 10 games to go last season. Give the man some time, let him build his squad, let the new board do their bit and see where we are in 2-3 seasons. Not moaning 16 games into a new season when we are only 15 points off last seasons total with 30 games to go.
There is a lot to look forward to at Welling with the proposed new development. If the new board stick around in 5-6 seasons we will be in League 2. Save this post.

1) Probably the board like literally ever other club in world football.
2) It was Matt who brought it up not Warren.
3) He never said he only plays long ball, he said hes a firm believer in piling balls into the box for his strikers to get on the end of it, classic route 1 football. These boys arent good enough to play mesmerising football on the floor. Yas is the only one and if you watch what he tries to do in the game the other players just arent on his wave length and are 3 steps behind him.
4) Paul literally said the main priority is getting the stand sorted for the play offs as the football league are onto him as the capacity is too low. Must be 3000 to play in play offs. The club is obviously spending money to build a team of players to have for a few seasons and to be COMPETITIVE in the league we have finished bottom 2 of the last 2 seasons.
Currently 15 points off of last seasons total with 30 games to go. Stop the bitching, get behind the manager and the team and trust the process.
In all the years there has been a meet the manager they have always had at least one other member of the coaching staff alongside them. I think Jamie Day did a few where he had Ashby, Frost and Beckham.
We need a good, united, coaching team.

Paul Parker did one on his own, I think.
Personally, I would rather that the manager, with or without coaching staff, was without directors. There could then be an individual meet the board meeting, where Paul, Matt, Garry etc, could inform us with what's going on behind the scenes.
We got 11 points from Warren's 10 games last season that kept us up, just out of interest I looked at our results, and saw Peter Taylor's last 17 games reached that figure, so the switch of manager definitely paid off.
I looked to see how relegated Billericay are this season, they are mid table, off promotion spots, whereas we are just 2 points off a play off spot, so in a miles better situation than Billericay. It just shows the difference small margins can make in football, spooky, two points less and we'd have been relegated, and it is hard to think many of our current players and manager would have wanted to be with us if we were a division down, so hard to get up again.
This season I've realised how complicated running a football club is, as the board have to do tons of behind the scenes work off the pitch to build links with the community to attract new fans and improve the match day experience to bring in more money to improve everything, while the manager has the on the pitch things to fix. Welling United shows there is no magical quick fix, it will take time. But if you think about the team last season - the likes of Tom Derry in attack for goodness sake - and compare with us now. We have been top half of the table all season long, so meeting that informal goal of being competitive and challenging in the top half, rather than battling away in the lower half. The back 3 turned out to be a dead end for our players, so Slough will be interesting to see a plan B beginning.
I wasn't there so can't comment, but after two, 'threatened with extinction seasons', surely the priorities for this one are to achieve the magical survival tally of 50 points, then the upgrade of the ground. No need for long winded essays and comparisons with others as to how that is achieved, that is what management are there to do. Just lend our support to team and management and, once those 50 points are reached, then we can see what's left for the remainder of this season.
Well done to the Board for the obvious all round improvements so far. Anything more than 27 points from the remining 30 games will be a bonus, then look forward to progress in 2023/2024.

It that is all that our ambitions are this season then our wage budget is ludicrously too high. Although I do agree with the importance of sorting out the ground. The priority of course is the road end but they also need to look at more toilets and food/hot drink facilities.
As for Johnny Hartley suggesting that the players we have now wouldn't be with us (if we'd been relegated) then I have to disagree. They are mercenaries- guns for hire.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh When the Wingssssss
To explain the background to my comments about attracting players, a few weeks back I saw Erith and Belvedere play Tunbridge Wells FC, as my son has moved to Tunbridge so it was a good chance to see two of our local teams play. Erith went into that game top of the league, having won 11 games in a row, so in great form, but the crowd was about maybe 125, and after Welling games it was an eyeopener to see how hard it is to attract fans lower down, even though Erith were in great form, as Erith are currently two divisions below us. I was looking at match reports from lower down divisions, one had an attendance of 34, which seemed low enough, then another one had just 17. So with low attendances one must be stuck and unable to really move upward.
Then with the Billericay situation, of them being unlikely to bounce straight back, it made me think how a team can go into a downward spiral that can be hard to recover from. So if we had got relegated last season, we would have fewer fans, less money coming in, only able to buy less good players as a result, harder then to win matches with less good players, so less likely to attract fans so potentially stuck in a recurring bad cycle. So a lucky escape from what could have been.
But we have stayed up, and started off with a really positive cycle, off the pitch board activity working really hard to boost attendances, on the pitch activity leading to winning football which attracts casual football fans, more money from higher attendances, so money available for better players. I have no idea what our budget was last year compared to this year, but guess the team budget last year was much smaller than this year. If we have more money this year it means we had less good players last year compared to this year. It is a competitive market out there for players, as Chris is right, they are mercenaries looking for the best deals, and from the manager meeting it sounds as though the club is now much more attractive to join. Myles, Kasim, Taylor, Ade, Chi and others are really great to watch and it is great they have chosen to be with us and I am really pleased for them and us fans that the commitment to the team is resulting in a consistent top half of the table position. Recent results suggest the back 3 was a trial that didn't work, but I can't wait for the Slough game, to see a plan B, and see how that works, as it takes time for formations to settle in, but tomorrow could be the start of the turnaround.
In the manager meeting the lack of an attacking winger was mentioned, which I agree hasn't been a strength and maybe why some of our released players were let go, as they didn't fill that role as well as hoped? But Chi was fab on the wing against Hungerford, getting into their box time and time again, so I wonder if he could be the answer to our wide midfield? But my 4 4 2 is really closes to 50p heads, though what is great is others in the squad are fine too, so bringing on subs like Antony, Kassarate, Sam, James, Cameron wouldn't really weaken the team. We have only got 4 guys left from last season, and the manager meeting was clear we hope to keep many more this season. There are 3 I would let go if it were my choice, but the rest are fine, and I keep thinking we already have all the right pieces of the jigsaw, just need to find out how best to place them together, so wondering if this will happen tomorrow, as we have more strength as a team than some recognise, so have not lost two in a row this season, so the result will be 2 - 0 or 3 - 0 to us. And longer term dreams may come true, and we could re-sign Tom Derry...
