Chelmsford drew with Dover yesterday, which is good news for us as both are above us, so both dropping 2 points helps us. Worthing are playing Oxford tonight and both are above us, so if we can get a win tonight we will close the gap on one or both of them, depending on their result.

Looking at Sloughs highlights against St Albans, all 3 goals were conceded from moves down the wide right, hopefully we get joy there too. My suggestion of playing Chi wide midfield and Rob H covering a different side of defence to the one usually plays on was based on that switch freeing Chi to play in midfield, as I for one really like Robs wide attacking play, so would like to have him in the side if poss, and think Chi answers problems in wide midfield.

Slough let in 2 or more in their last 6 games, we havent scored more than once for the past 6 games, but our situation is easier to fix, as looking back it turns out we didnt really have the right players for our trial with the back 3 to work, so lesson learned quite quickly, and Friday meeting suggests we may now try another formation. Our great start to the season was with a back 4, so it could pay to go back to that. Looking forward to Slough, after testing players and formations in the first third of the season we are now in the second third of the season, and a more fixed set up may emerge, so hoping we click tonight, with lessons learned, and that today may be the start of the future!

I don't think I'd call 9 games "quite quickly", especially as we only won one of those games and lost by at least 3 in 4 of the others.

We had loads of possession and fast breaks but the final ball wasn't good enough. Slough defended well and the goalkeeper was constantly wasting time. He eventually got booked.

At least the ball was on the floor alot more than last Tuesday.

But brutally honest this squad is massively underachieving from where it should be and on the eye watering budget allegedly afforded to them. Question the board needs to ask themselves are they happy with what they are getting from the manager and his squad at the moment, how long do they trust the process for?

Its quite a demoralising time watching Welling at the moment.

Barely troubled their keeper all night. To be absolutely honest we arent very good. All the early season promise seems to have been a false dawn. We will finish bottom half of the table and possibly get involved in a relegation scrap at this rate. Im not joking.

Rivers, we are on the downgrade 100 per cent agreed  but even I will draw the line at relegation lol This side wont get involved in a relegation scrap. But bottom half finish yes, and this is what I mean the board need to think are they happy with the process and feel we will turn this decline around (I dont personally) or a change is needed.

Totally agree. And I think the answer is yes they are content should they be based on form since Fisher....probably not.

1 win in 11 I believe the current form is. No defeats in last two home games though for the Feeney fans amongst us.

I don't do sugarcoating, I just say what I think, for better or worse.

So let's look at the game tonight. It finished 0 - 0, and if it went on for another 10 hours it would have finished 0 - 0 as neither side looked that likely to score. We were playing at home, against a team that had let in 2 or more in their previous 6 games, and we had a ridiculously defensive set up (bearing in mind the form of the oppostion) of one up front.

A couple of pluses, we were clearing the ball to the wings, instead of the aimless ball right back down the middle. So that meant instead of us conceding possession more than half the time from our clearances, we were actually keeping possession, and probably had 70% possession over the match, so that improvement was really good to see. The defence actually did a good job, as did Kai, the midfield were closing down. I have never understood what the hell Warren sees in Medy "Give the ball away cheaply" Elito, and he gave one of his characteristically anonymous performances, mi****ting as many passes as he got right, and still no goals, no assists, and if anyone can see what he adds to the team for goodness sake tell me as I am still trying to work out why he is with us. Communication on the pitch was miles better. Chi yet again was brilliant going forward into their half, but yet again Chi was misplaced in defence, rather than playing in midfield, meaning our most successful creative attacking player was used in defence. Again. Great. Stefan should have been yellow carded at the least for a flare up the ref missed, so was lucky to stay on the pitch, as his yellow card later should actually have been his second yellow, but I am realising he is so self indulgent with his trigger temper, that he starts to feel more of a liability than an asset.

But in my area at least fans booed at the end of the match, which I don't recall this season, and the attendance of 519 said its own story.

The other team I follow is West Ham, there Moyes gets stick from the fans from having too defensive a formation (4 defenders, TWO holding midfielders, ONE striker) and presumably will be sacked soon as he has failed to umderstand fans expect to see a good game of football, not a crap cautious game where the manager is scared to put out an attacking formation. But I dont expect to come to Welling to see that same situation. Warren seriously needs to go in the tank and do a total rethink of how he sets his team out, an isolated guy up front hasnt worked whenever he has gone down that path, so why stick with a formula that doesnt work?

End of my sugarcoating.

I thought we controlled the game well but in the final third we just looked lost for ideas. We could have nicked it in the end but it is far from convincing against a very poor Slough side.

I thought the ideas were right and far better than what we've seen recently but the actual execution of it was poor, especially in the final third against a team who were there for the taking.
Their fans celebrated at FT and it wasn't because they thought they've got a draw against a good side, it was because of how absolutely s#it they are!
I do hope we stick with the formation change, things would like to see is a couple of natural wingers and Barnes come in at right back with Cox in the middle instead of aransibia

Somebody said in a previous thread that this season we are playing the best football he'd ever seen!!!!
It is dire, dull, aimless mindnumbingly boring football from an overpaid rabble put together by unqualified and irrelevant people.
You don't need directors of football at this level, you need a good manager who knows this level and who has contacts at this level who can put a side together with a proper plan both selection wise and tactical in the way he's going to use what he brings through the door to make the team better.

All people do at the club is blow smoke up peoples backsides and stand back and do nothing while the team, the ground, the club goes downhill and/or is run into the ground. It'll be better in a few years honest....been listening to that crap for years and the same people who licked MGs bum and stood back and said nothing while the club went to 5hit are doing it again like some sort of serial a$$ licking addicts.

The ground is a horrible miserable place to go and watch the game now, so much so that promotion is out of the question so what's the point? If we finish 3rd or 16th who cares??? Football is about competing, advancement, ambition and possibilities........we are chucking a decent wage budget away on the whole (not all of them) on substandard, inept players who are going through the motions and for what?? In all honesty though, how can you expect players to run through brick walls for you when we know and they know there is no chance of promotion no matter what they do??? I don't wanna hear bs about new catering ideas or turnstile queues or 1970's marquee temporary bars or people talking rubbish on social media about how far the clubs come blah blah blah it's all nonsense.

To be successful the club needs to be equally effective on the pitch and of it, as the success of the two halves of Welling United support each other. The board work to bring new fans in, and then the new fans have to be impressed with what they see on the pitch. And the on the pitch football has to be attractive to bring in casual fans who come to watch a game of football, and hopefully like what they see and want to come back again.

In the first 10 matches or so both sides were delivering on this, but gradually the football has gone downhill, so the on the pitch side isn't working as well as it needs to.

I am a very analytical person, so I was wanting to work out why a team can go from comfortably top 5 earlier, to current 10th, and on a downward trend. The match last night showed me at least where the problems lie. We have lost confidence, some (not all) players were scared of making mistakes, so were doing safe passes backwards or sideways so they didn't make a mistake, and passed the responsibility onto someone else. So I would estimate we had 70% possession, but if a lot of that is used negatively passing the ball back and sideways, it isn't going to achieve much. I remember Warren saying he feared no team. Well, it looked as though he was scared of Slough, as we were at home, against a team that had let 2 or more in their previous 6 games, yet he set up a very defensive formation packing the midfield, yet only playing one guy up front, and I feel really sorry for Ade, as it must be a drag to play solo so often up front, with a midfield miles behind. About 20 minutes to go we put 3 up front, and guess what, it didn't weaken the midfield at all, and we actually started to look as though we had a cutting edge. Taylor has scored 4 this season, only 1 behind out second highest scorer Stefan, yet for some reason Taylor was a sub, with the consistently ineffective Medy Elito having the starting position instead. When Taylor came on he knitted central midfield really well.

Southampton have just sacked their manager, and an ex player of his was saing players didnt like playing for him as he was like a school teacher towards them. I have no evidence for this, it is just a gut instinct, but I guess the players must HATE having Warren constantly telling them they are not good enough for the higher levels he has played at, I am sorry, for me at least that all stinks. If I were a player that would demoralise me, to do my best, and always be told it is not good enough. And to do it publicly, like saying that Kai was responsible for 4 goals against Dartford. Yes, to be honest he was for 3, maybe even 4, but you just dont go out publicly to slag off your own players. In my work I once had a situation where I got feedback from colleagues, and was shocked how my rather arrogant nature at the time had offended them. I apologised to the people concerned, as I just hadn't been thinking of how it appeared to others. I totally changed from all that as I learned from it. Warren has always said it is the players that are responsible for any poor performances. Well actually, he needs to look at how he conducts himself, and how it impacts on his team, as the players coming off against Hungerford (after a win) and the players coming off after Slough (after a draw) looked unhappy, and in the same way Warren needed to read the room about the fans feelings, he needs to read the room about the players' feelings. Our next match is against Concord, who are 5th from bottom, so theoretically an easy game. But they have suddenly won their last 3 games, so I ws wondering why they have improved and looked at their results, and they have been really unlucky to have started with a long run of matches against the top teams, so are actually much better than their league position suggests. But our other matches in November and December look quite decent, so if Warren takes a long hard look at what he is contributing to create the toxic situation, and change that, then this will have a happy ending for him, if not, it will just end up with sad headlines, "Welling sack Feeney". So it is up to him to change, to stop that headline happening.

Was about to say the same.

2 main points I actually agree with after dissecting it.

1) Some players played like they didn't want to be blamed for losing if that were to happen and made sure things they done were very safe.

2) I fully agree that Warrens constant comments about players have not helped the situation we are in or getting into. Like I said previously, it compares to one of the greatest players of all time Henry, he was a terrible manager in USA because he managed by expecting players to do what he done and constantly called them out for mistakes.

I don't disagree and I would think it's a significant root cause.  How can that be repaired?  Players or some of are churning out performances different to how they were in the purple patch.

On paper nearly all this xi makes a NS team or squad at least

Agreed. I can't be bothered reading all that waffle. I skimmed over it and saw Southampton mentioned so I suspect that it's as irrelevant as previous ones that have compared us with Liverpool and West Ham.

I don't know what's more worrying....our lack of form or the fact that I find myself agreeing with Mr Hartley on some points..??

I think we played 4-3-3 in the first half but both wide players had no pace and weren't going to beat a man. At least the back four was an improvement and we controlled possession better but the build up was still far too slow. All three centre halves that were used last night looked far more at home in a back four. The only threats going forward came from  our full backs as the midfield was so one paced it was frightening! I think we could/should try Chi further forward with a proper left back behind him for insurance although Chi does need to work on his final ball. I keep hearing we have people who can open teams up but all our midfield did last night was pass to the opposition! And don't get me started on the set pieces - we either tried to take, quick short free kicks and just surrendered possession and the vast majority of corners and free kicks were woeful last night.

Not sure if he was injured but Aransibia once again the fall guy as the other forwards are never replaced regardless of how they are playing. Kasim was struggling after an hour but again he's a favourite so stays on. The front six we employed last night had no legs and no pace - yes Kassarate would have made a difference in that regard but he was suspended! Let's not forget Slough were awful last night and perhaps the worst side we have played this season. Their current run of form is worse than ours and they were there for the taking.

This current Welling side is just so pedestrian. Of the 14 players used last night, 6 of them are 30+. We need legs and pace throught the side and we need it sooner rather than later..!

Notwithstanding what we have heard from Management/Board over the last few days, IMO the time for gelling and jam tomorrow has passed. On the evidence of recent form some of us should alter their line of vision and look downward instead of up. Gavin talks tactics far better than me but looking at last night the defence had, in school parlance, a free period as the Slough forward line was inept. Although Slough defended very well our midfield created virtually nothing and they, and the forward line, could still be playing until 21.30 tonight and still not score. We had four "breakaway" attacks where we had the chance to create excellent goalscoring opportunities but they all tamely petered out. Who have we got in the hutch to offer something different, Kassarate (strictly not on the bench as he is suspended) who I like very much, Andrews (who never gets a chance), Simpson (unknown quantity) and Aaron Barnes who is part of the defence. Nothing much else. If we cannot beat the likes of Slough at home, then I repeat we should be looking downwards not up. A result at Concord on Saturday is essential to get the show on the road again.

To summarise this post, Warren needs to read the room with his players, and stop demoralising them by always telling them they are not up to standard, as you can see very clearly by now this has damaged their confidence.

The highlights against Slough have gone online, and when looking at these highlights (and sadly that is accurate, they are indeed the highlights,) just look at the understandably demoralised faces of the Welling players as they walk out to play one up front against the Slough team that has let in 2 or more in their last 6 games. And you will see Welling players demoralised after being told for months by their manager that they are not up to the required standard that he played at. And knowing that he be irresponsible and will say anything that goes wrong is down to them, and never him. And you can hear the booing as the players go off.

Apologies for what will be a fairly long post, but too many people bury their head in the sands over what is going on, so if it takes a long post to outline the problems and solutions, then such is life.

Pre-season we had easier matches against lower division opposition because higher games had to be called off due to our pitch being relayed. So we didn't get beaten much, so didn't learn as a team how to respond to really hard games that go against one. So this slump of the team is the first time they are faced with this situation.

At a time like this they need support and encouragement, but unfortunately they have a manager who publicly belittles them as players, screaming angrily at them in matches, criticising them in post match interviews, and basically acting in a totally unacceptable bullying way towards players and officials. None of the readers of this forum would allow their boss to behave to them the bullying way Warren acts towards the people he is managing. Warren does not do social media, and proudly says he will not change how he does things. Well, that is a big mistake, as social media has lots of toxic nonsense, but also lots of valuable educated informed comments, so by avoiding it all, one misses out the good, as well as the bad.

There has been lots of talk here from fans hating the use of the long ball. I didn't understand why fans were saying that, as in my eyes long ball just meant keepers doing long kicks down the pitch, and as we weren't always doing that I couldn't see why people here still said we used long ball. Then the forum explained it included defenders doing long ball clearances, and then I got it, as I saw that too very clearly. I believe this has filtered through to Warren, and it was pleasing in the Slough game to see miles more accurate clearances going on, better possession as a result (in fact never seen us dominate a match possession so much) so the fan forum views have been listened to on this and acted upon.

In the story A Christmas Carol Scrooge is confronted with the bad things that will happen if he carries on behaving badly, and he changes his ways and has a happy future. It is exactly the same for Warren, he needs to cut out all his Big Time Charlie nonsense, and realise he is managing in the 6th Division, so is a 6th Division manager. Yes, obviously he will want to manage at a higher level, but for the moment the fact is he is a 6th Division manager. And the players he manages are 6th Division players. Him belittling them about this achieves nothing, as I am really sympathetic towards the players, they are doing their best, and are just lacking the managerial support and understanding all players need. I believe Warren uses his football past as a self defence mechanism, to block out any criticism by saying anyone saying it is not worth listening to as they have not played or managed at the same levels he has played. That arrogance is his downfall. I could make a pretty shrewd guess on who could replace Warren to bring in a calmer happier more positive team. So it is up to Warren to quickly build some bridges and realise exactly what a mess he has created in our games since Havant, as looking at the results there has only been one above average performance from us since then, away to Ebbsfleet, others are underperformance, and that he needs to fix that mess by changing his negative behaviour when things dont go the way he wants them to.

Going forward Warren needs to read the room with his players.

I really liked the wide play against Slough, that play up the wings was how we played there in the golden period earlier this season. Our attacking threat was non existent against Slough, but at least we had more of an attacking shape when we put a third striker on with 20 minutes to go, so that formation of 3 up front looked promising. And defensively we were quite solid, but that may be simply because they were clearly set up defensively aiming not to have yet another heavy loss after 6 in a row. So bad as it was overall, there were actually some positives. Our better passing from defence gave us much more possession as we had stopped giving the ball away too cheaply, so if we can add a cutting edge to this better possession we can get back to how we were earlier on, as I remember that, and it is why I still rate Warren as a manager, but he shoots himself in the foot with the negative way he behaves towards his players, so needs to fix that. If anything that behaviour helps the opposition, as it must encourage them to see the opposition manager screaming his head off at his players, and helpfully highlighting the weak areas, so the opposition can pressurise them all the more. There is the talk of player retention, I just wonder how many would want to come back for another season of that sort of treatment?

Some are now talking of relegation being a possibility. We are currently 5 points off a play off spot, and 9 points above relegation. Since Havant we have got 7 out of 24 possible points so roughly relegation form on recent performances. But the bottom 4 look dodgy, and our great early start gives us a cushion, but if we continue with our decline while others improve we will continue our freefall. Though oddly enough the point against Slough lifted us a place up the table.

It is a shame that people that should know better complain about me mentioning other clubs in similar awkward situations to us, as in fact it is educational to see how other teams and managers deal with players lacking confidence and making too many mistakes, and then compare it to how we go about fixing those same things in our team. It is also a shame that the people at the top of the club shut themselves away from opposing views, by not reading the fans forum, by blocking constructive emails, and being too scared to talk face to face with anyone with a dislike of the manager's damaging toxic approach toward the players.

Of course, along with freedom not to read it, or the room (whatever that ridiculous phrase means).
