Should have put them to bed early doors.
However, good result and both goals good team efforts.
We have had some poor referees this season, but todays takes the award.
How we never got a penalty and the blokes booked for diving (in the second half) is beyond me.
Good win but need to take chances and not give chances. Will be teams who punish us but delighted with the win. Referee was straight out of a Christmas cracker. Appalling
A really pleasing performance, as the three new players added tons of desperately needed pace into our play, and that turned us from the sluggish team of the past few months into today's really exciting, quick, attacking team.
The Tonbridge manager is hard pressed for many genuine positives from the game, whereas Warren is spoiled for choice about things to be pleased about in the win. Best game I've seen from Amadou who was my man of the match, Daniel was great too in the first half, Myles played a cracker, it was a great team performance, it really was Welling United.
The postponements due to the snow may well turn out to be a blessing in disguise, as the guys out there today had a much stronger team spirit than before and it feels as though everyone involved has been working out together in training and talks what needed to change to break the bad cycle of 2 wins from 12 games (Bradley Quinton was sacked after 1 win from 12 games, so our form really was ominously bad) and then putting those lessons learned into practice instead of just repeating past mistakes. Now it is 2 wins on the bounce, so now heading into the second half of the season with grounds for more confidence of a top half finish, and meeting that informal goal of looking up, rather than down. Great so many came to the game despite recent poorish results.
Form in this division is so unpredictable, Ebbsfleet kicked off with 10 wins in a row, and have now crashed to their 7th defeat from their past 9 games, which would have been unimaginable a month or so ago. Fingers crossed we continue to place the emphasis on speedy play, and that leads us to have a great run of results again. The most impressive thing though was the way three new players have fitted in so quickly, as that is such a challenging thing to achieve. Add in the fact this win was without regular key players Chi and Stefan, yet we still created so many clear chances, and the second half of the season looks very interesting.

Our first goal was fantastic from start to finish lovely to see that we are capable of playing like that. Still think we are fragile at the back and we let their players run too far with the ball unchallenged on a few occasions.
The 3 new lads have made a huge difference in terms of pace in key areas and hopefully we keep then until the end of the season.
Bit of trivia for anyone interested Tonbridge Angels have never won a league game against us at PVR. Only times they have won at PVR have been in KSC or against E&B&Q. (Taken from their forum).

Had a few supporters contact me last night asking if Warren is ok after getting a bit emotional during the post match interview. I've just this minute spoken to him and although he hasn't elaborated he has assured me he's ok which is good to hear
Enjoyed the game yesterday. A good ish performance. Have to say the 3 loanees have made a world of difference. It does worry me still that we tend to invite pressure when we are ahead. It happens every time. Wish I knew why WF was so cut up about in his interview. Anyway 3 points a win and a little optimism is a good way to start the new year. COYW.

This may sound schoolboy stuff, but IMO we invite relentless pressure because when conceding a corner or free kick into our box, all 10 of our outfield players generally come back to defend. The ball might get cleared upfield but there is no Welling player to receive or challenge for it, hence it comes straight back for another attack. Leave one man on the halfway line and he has a chance of collecting the clearance and laying the ball back for a colleague who is driving forward, relieving the pressure at the same time. Also, opponents usually leave two defenders marking that man on halfway, so there is one less attacker available. I've never understood why teams/managers do this. Can anyone explain?
Enjoyed yesterday's encounter, many positives and much better entertainment, just concerned we may only have these loan players who are making a difference for a month. Together with the short term contracts given to our new management structure, will 31st January see us thrust back into pre-Christmas doom and gloom?
#18morepointstosafety? 15 on the table before 31 January...

We have had this under different managers over very many years and I have never understood it. As well as having no outlet when we clear it, it also makes the penalty area so congested that it becomes a free for all. If you leave one up, the opposition are likely to leave at least one bac, often two, unless it's in the final minute of added time.
An unsavoury thing about modern society is how people suddenly feel entitled to try to destroy other peoples' lives by criticising them online. So it is all too easy to fall into a trap of playing a game of "sack the manager", without considering it actually affects the manager's life. So it is only when performances and results are both so bad for so long, and the manager has lost the respect of players and fans, with no evidence to suggest the manager has a clue how to turn things round, that it is time for the manager to go.
My personal view is Warren is incredibly old school in his man management, all his shouting at players is what he experienced himself as a player, but he does not realise football has moved on since then, and a calmer more supportive approach is needed these days to be successful.
He also needs to be more realistic about abilities of the players at our level. At the end of the day, we are a 6th division team, with 6th division players, with a 6th division manager. That isnt putting anyone down, it is just the reality of who we are now, though obviously hopefully we will play higher up. So our footballers are like children, so him taking the approach of tackling them as men misses the point about them. I was really touched when a player said to me before a recent match, "We are trying our best", as I felt so sorry for him and the guys out there, as we can see they try their best, but they get so little positive feedback no wonder they were so demoralised recently.
Warren's old school approach means he thinks hard work is the fix for everything. But I don't think our players respond their best to non stop hard work, as football is a game, and it is important to remember it should be fun, as well as competitive. So when things go wrong for old school hard work managers, their problem is they have no solution other than more hard work. And if that doesnt work, they are screwed, because they have nothing else to fall on to fix things. I would advise fans to have a look at the Ebbsfleet managers interview after yesterday's 4th league loss in a row, www.youtube.com/watch INTERVIEW | Dennis Kutrieb after Dartford | New Years Day 2023 where he keeps repeating they have to work harder to change things. But just effort alone won't fix their problems. And as we have seen recently, a test of a manager is how they respond when things go badly, and if they actually have fixes.
So I get a sense Warren may be finally realising limitations of his old school approach, and trying a more modern, sympathetic approach to the players. Before our first Tonbridge game it sounds as though he had a relaxed session with the guys, instead of the usual hard work, and we then won our next game. I wonder if our recent months of poor results was partly caused by the guys simply not being fit enough to manage his heavy training demands?
I think the problems with slow midfield players is something that needs to be fixed, and yesterday we were great in that aspect, that run of Daniel's to set up Ade was great, we just haven't had that sort of pace before, and need it as all the best teams have quick wide players.
The biggest problem Warren needs to fix is the drop in our second half performances. So often we come out in second halves very much on the back foot, as opposition managers fire their players up for an attacking second half, whereas we seem to drop back 20 feet or more in the second half. The results show this very clearly, in first half of our 23 league games we ended ahead 6 times, drawing 11 times, and behind 6 times, scoring 19 and conceding 19. In the second half we scored more 4 times, drew 10 times, and lost the half 9 times, scoring just 11 times in the second half of our 23 games, and conceding 15. 11 second half goals is way too low. We looked good in the second half yesterday, creating lots of clear chances, so this younger, fitter team shows promise of fixing the issues that held us back in the last couple of months.
So now here we are, unbeaten in 2023, scoring an average of 2 goals a game in 2023, and only conceding an average of a goal a game in 2023! Maybe a play off spot looks less of a dream...
He was certainly more comforting to his players yesterday, those that played, those that were subbed, and those who never got on.
Still got some gob on him though, which no matter how unjust a decision may be deemed (yesterdays penalty appeal / yellow card received), needs a degree of control.
Appreciate it was a shocking decision, but if the referee was within range, would have got a right hook.
Further agree with above poster with regards of keeping players up the field.
Think we kicked the ball at each other on at least two occasions.
Personally would leave two up and possibly putting a player between centre line / penalty area.
That decision would obviously be taken dependant on the opponents presence.
JH do you ever wake up in the morning with a stonking Headache and grabbing for your phone to see who you text the night before? Anyway....
I think what is apparent is that not only some young hungry players to freshen things up but a experienced number two are vital.
From what I understand Belgrave is taking training and it seems a fresh approach is working. Sam Cox is a fantastic guy and a really good player but maybe lacking in knowledge at the moment for what we require and you are correct on 1 thing jh, feeney is a old school manager who in IMO is best left in the background to manage the squad and match days, training he can leave to his coach whilst just overseeing the sessions and making points in between.
Odin, in 10 years time I will re-read my post, and only then will I understand what I was saying! Actually, there was some background thinking about a couple of things behind what I wrote, but if I had put them in the post it would have doubled it at least. And as I am trying to keep my posts shorter (yes, I really am!) I had to leave those parts out, which is a shame as they would have made what I said clearer.
But the two background things were Warren has a really dreadful track record as a manager, which I am not sure if many are aware of. So I thought unless he learns from his past mistakes Welling will be just the latest team he leads to disaster. Our poor record leading up to Tonbridge wont be a surprise to anyone who has looked into Warrens previous managerial record, which is by and large disastrous, with a trail of relegation and failure.
1. At Newport he was sacked with his team bottom of the table, with 6 points from their first 9 matches of the 201617 season. A new management team managed to keep them up.
2. In his next job at Ards they were relegated after finishing second from bottom, 12 points below the team above.
3. At his next job at Pirin he got promotion, but the following season his team were bottom of the table with 8 losses from their first 9 games, and he left, and they ended up relegated.
With 2 relegations and a bottom place at the time of departure from his last 3 teams, nothing with Welling should be a surprise. It just repeats his record of teams collapsing due to his toxic behaviour towards players and others resulting in them losing their respect for him. Some may consider his record shows a lack the temperament, man management skills, or ability to effectively deal with failure and turn things round. Football is a results business, if his results end up being good enough he will stay, if not, he will go. Time will tell which way the cookie crumbles. Who knows, he may even eventually learn not to keep repeating his past mistakes. So that was on my mind.
Also I used to manage football teams, and I was a Warren type, always angrily screaming at my players in matches. Once I stopped and had time and space to look back, I realised how abusive my behaviour was, and how I turned what should have been a fun, enjoyable experience, playing football, into stress and abuse for players. I had a lot of player turnover, as players walked, as they didn't enjoy my approach. Then the penny dropped with me about that, so I turned into a fun manager, which fixed morale and player retention and transformed results. I felt so guilty about my past behaviour I got in touch with my previous teams, and asked them to introduce a code of conduct, so that people like me wouldn't be allowed to behave like that to players. The odd thing is Welling have some rules on behaviour, the programme says, "Welling United FC has a zero tolerance towards foul or abusive language and racism at Park Valley Road. Should anyone be found to be using foul or abusive language, or making racist remarks they will be asked to leave the stadium. It is a criminal offence to swear or make racist remarks in public and anyone who persists in using this at matches may be prosecuted..." yet we have club officials in matches constantly breaking these requirements, which is really bad for a team aiming to set a good example for the community.
So it is interesting to see if and how the manager changes, to avoid making mistakes he previously made in this and other management roles, to avoid his past disasters happening to us too. I know at first look what I say may look negative or hostile to the manager, but actually there are tons of great things about him, so if he could cut out his bad sides he could end up a really good manager. So everything I say is constructive and to help improve the team. I can guarantee people some may not like what I say now, but re-reading it in future one would see I am usually shown to be right. So I am happy to stand by what I say, and if I am proved wrong, happy to say I was wrong. For example the Chi replacement defender did really well, which is great, as that could free Chi up to play in midfield, where his dribbling and drive would transform us as an attacking force. Similarly Taylor Maloney is an outstanding attacking force, adding his assists and goals totals he is probably our most successful player, yet Warren plays him as a holding midfielder, so if he moved him directly behind the two strikers that would be an awesome improvement to the attacking shape of the team, as Ade and Stefan get lots of goals in the box, whereas Taylor M has a great shot from the edge of the box, but that is lost to us if Warren keeps seeing him as just a defensive holding player, just like he misplays Chi's role. But our Tonbridge game was really good, I loved the players forming the circle before the match, that showed a real new togetherness, and support for each other, which they hadnt been getting from the manager, but hopefully will from now. And now to press the "Post Quick Reply" button!

Jonny Hartley (I've now been informed that this isn't your real name), let me give you some friendly advice. The manager doesn't do social media or this forum BUT he has been informed of your comments. I've have just spoken to him on another issue and my advice to you is to stop making comments and observations about his character, otherwise you may find yourself having legal action taken against you.!!!
ouch, I hope this 'yellow card' doesn't get added to Wings fair play tally? Actually, I was concerned my 8 line posting yesterday was 4 lines too long when I read it back. Another stat to throw in, the number of contributions to this forum has fallen over the past couple of years and yet the word count has increased. Don't let the authorities stop you JH, I make good use of your posts when I can't sleep. It used to be a Double Diamond that worked wonders!!
That threat of legal action sums up the problems. Nothing I have said is inaccurate, so there are no grounds for legal action. However it reinforces what I said, that the manager's mentality means he cannot handle any criticism, or free speech, so avoids it. When you look at it you realise he has a team that will not disagree with him as they know he stores grudges and drops anyone who crosses him. He has the board backing. So he has no reasonable counterbalancing checks and balances that all effective managers need. And being surrounded by yes people is a risk, behind long poor runs, as there is no fresh thinking to fix things. So the fans' reasonable neutral, experienced and knowledgeable views are the only fair and neutral opinions. Except he thinks they are not worth paying attention to so blocks them out. At the end of the day, this forum is people saying what they think. And that is worth knowing, whether or not one agrees with them.
This wanting to silence a challenging voice is as unsavoury as the cancel culture I dont like of people trying to get managers sacked. If a a manager doesn't understand that part of the job is dealing with opposition at times, as well as the positives, they shouldn't be in the job. I've said good things, I've said bad things, it is all fair and balanced and constructive overall, and I make the same points as other fans.
Being open to constructive criticism is part of being an effective worker, and ignoring any constructive criticism is a recipe for problems. In his interviews he keeps attacking fans for having expectations of the season, him always going on, interview after interview, win lose or draw, that people have to remember where we came from last season, with our major rebuilding, and that we just have to play games and see where that takes us. But that point is a waste of time, as it equally applies to most other teams in the league who have also done major rebuilds, some more successfully than us, so this late in a season one can't keep making that excuse.
I am really impressed with player selection. It is safe to say we have the best keeper in the league, Ade, Stefan and Taylor are three of the best attacking players in the league, many of our other players are among the best in the league, so it is only fair and reasonable to expect a play off spot/ top half finish. We are 7 points off a play off spot, with 10 remaining games against teams above us - Chelmsford City, Dartford, Oxford City, Worthing, Bath City, Eastbourne Borough, St Albans City, Ebbsfleet United, Havant & Waterlooville, Braintree Town, and 13 games of teams below us Dulwich Hamlet, Chippenham Town, Chippenham Town, Hemel Hempstead Town, Slough Town, Hungerford Town, Farnborough, Concord Rangers, Weymouth, Hampton & Richmond Borough, Taunton, Cheshunt, Dover Athletic. I think we could win enough of them to finish top 7. But it is common sense that to do that one has to analyse past mistakes to fix them, rather than just burying ones head in the sand and repeating them.
The Tonbridge game at the weekend was top quality from Welling, and hopefully some of the fans views filtered through to help influence the positive changes that have clearly happened in the past few weeks.

Ok well have it your way, I was asked to pass a message on to notify you of possible consequences and I have..

I think there's a difference between constructive criticism and accusing someone of toxic behaviour. No reasonable person would have an issue with the former, but most might with the latter.
Thanks for passing on the message Nigel, I know none of this has anything to do with you, and I am sure the last thing you need is silliness like this legal talk! I will be honest, I am puzzled about the concept of someone threatening legal action over something that was written that they haven't even read, so they don't know if it is accurate or not, as that makes the legal threat seem very misguided.
But I have drawn a line under that, as this is supposed to be an independent forum, not managed by the club, so it really concerns me if the manager is trying to control what is said on this forum, as if that happens then it is not independent at all, and would just be a not too well hidden official club site. What I really value is the totally open debate here, and it would be a real shame if that was prevented. People are free to say what they want, and to read or not read what they want, and long may that continue to be the case, as after all football is all about opinions. This site has helped me understand lots of new things.
So going back to the actual purpose of this thread, it was so enjoyable to see the positive players out there again on Saturday, sometimes adversity makes one stronger, and it has just struck me now, while sitting here and writing, how when we conceded the equaliser we didn't go flat as we had previously when we have conceded, but just carried on really positively, so a miles better mentality. As I mentioned in a comment on the YouTube highlights, it was great we had three clear chances in the first 10 minutes, so it is great the patience of the fans has been rewarded. Sure it wasn't nice getting to that, but as I mentioned earlier, our remaining fixtures are ok, and it is not beyond imagination we could string a good run of results together, and Warren will end up having the last laugh, and good for him if he does. He did tip Argentina to win the World Cup, so he does know more about football than he sometimes lets on! Just joking, but being serious, sometimes ones biggest critics are actually the most helpful feedback possible, helping one fix things one didnt always know needed to be fixed. So moving on from that passed on message, I am sure we are all looking forward to Worthing on Saturday, as I remember that 2 - 4 defeat against them in August, as we had tons of chances, and were let down by a now departed defender having a nightmare game, so it will be good to improve in the re-match.
Really?! this is what it has come to. With respect to Mr Hartley I don't pay much attention to the posts due to the reasons previously outlined on here. And I really appreciate you and your efforts nigel but why would the comments be passed to feeney who on the contrary says he can take criticism and secondly why is the club trying to moderate the forum to this degree or have I missed something?
Agree Jimmy, and furthermore, would have thought Feeney had a bit more about him than getting upset about what someone writes about him on here.
Feeney strikes me as a no nonsense bloke, so any ramblings from an excitable amateur sports journalist would be shrugged off.
Better still, he would invite him to address the team again.
Legal steps? Do me a favour? All sounds very Dulwich Hamlet.
I watched an interesting interview with Rio Ferdinand, who made the common sense point managers must accept there is criticism, as you can't expect to only have praise, so you must be open to both. As a football fan and as a manager in work (though not a football manager) it is interesting seeing football managers deal with things going wrong, to see if there are any lessons one can learn from that. It is interesting to see how Moyes and Klopp are dealing with results being below expectations. Positively responding to any criticism should be part of any decent manager's work. Here for example are some comments made on just one YouTube video about Moyes, which are far more extreme than anything I have said, as what I say is constructive, even though some may not realise that at first, whereas these comments from YouTube are personal, then again they have a right to say what they think.
"The contempt Moyes has for us fans is palpable. He literally sees us as a total irritation. At least Mr Gold bailed out while his club was still in the Premier League before sh*iface Moyes absolutely destroys us completely - alongside Sullivan... Dont think Ive seen a worse Press conference from Moyes until yesterday. He is arrogant, petulant and deluded, oh and based on our current form his managerial skills are pony too... Outdated out of touch Zombie Moyes grey dead man walking. No creativity."
It is a shame pressure clouded Warren's thinking. What impressed me about him inviting me to talk with the players in October is he knew I had some big reservations about how they were playing, as we had just let in 3 or more goals for several games and things were going off the rails, just because they weren't closing down in midfield, it was as simple as that. So I went in with the intention of being constructively critical, as well as saying some positives. But he was fine about me saying whatever it was I thought, he didn't check with me first what I was going to say, just let me talk, and that really impressed me about him. So hopefully he will get back a more balanced view on accepting a range of feedback, as he was very emotional in his post match interview, so there are obviously some pressures going on, so whatever the problems are hopefully they work out. But Saturday's performance was really pleasing, and hopefully will have taken off some of the pressures.
Vanarama League are planning to soon introduce live streaming of matches, so it will be great to watch our away games that way, as half way through the season we are still in touch of a play off spot, and football is such a funny game it would be so amusing if we get promotion after all this soap opera and roller coaster of a season.

JH, I think it would be great for you to take a training session so the boys can learn what you know. Theres no way that the team should miss out on your wisdom that you splurt on here week in, week out. I remember you claiming earlier in the season that you have Warrens phone number so it would be great for you to give him a call and offer your services, if not Im more than happy to have a chat with Warren myself and arrange it for you. If you drop your number over to me, Ill get it sorted. The team needs you JH
JW, before criticising me, have a look at yourself and your own mistakes. I have never claimed to have Warren's phone number, so please stop making silly things up like that just to try to have a go at me, I've never even spoken to him on the phone. As you are so knowledgeable, please phone Warren and give him your advice, better still you tell the players what you think in a training session. Judging by the accuracy of your post to me I am sure everyone will really benefit from your views. Just out of interest, what are the things you think can be improved?
The big thing to tell the team is they drop too deep, so don't have enough players up to help attacks, which is why in our present squad we only have three players who have scored more than one goal in our 24 league matches so far, and why before today we had only got 11 second half goals in 23 games. We got 2 second half goals today which is really good news, the younger players make a difference, and now we aren't running out of steam in second halves.
JH you basically spout that much crap that you've forgotten what you have said, because you definitely said you had his number and even claimed to have conversations with him. For your own good I'd probably delete your account. Welling is a very tight knit club in places and what people have or haven't done gets around quickly.

Totally ridiculous comment. Im no fan of JHs long winded comments but the threat of legal action for comments he hasnt even read totally sums up Feeneys ego.
