Kasim never had 90 mins in him.
Blowing out his arse after 70 when starting.

The squad line up looks pretty accurate to me though don't think we'll see much more of Olomowewe who is unfancied I believe which is unfortunate when he remains on the books!

Palace Francis was on loan I thought and Lucas Atkins appears to have sunk without trace (unless injured).

Kasim is no loss sadly but tried his best.

Lucas Atkins is out on dual registration.

I read this comment from a Chelmsford fan on a National League South fans forum talking about Dartfords new manager, but showing a really thought provoking and accurate view of what sort of players are needed in our league, and I bear it in mind when watching us and our opponents.

"Dowson is a solid non league manager. Where the likes of Steve King (and numerous others) fall down is they're not very pragmatic. They want to play lovely, flowing, tippy tappy, play out from the back football which us nice in theory until you realise that neither the pitches or the players are good enough for that to be effective.....unless of course you're spending an absolute fortune and have a team full of players playing a level or two below their natural level.

We did that under Glenn Pennyfather for years. We'd look unbeatable on our day, have amazing cup runs (e.g. FA Cup 2nd round 3 years in a row) but when it came to the crunch we'd always fall short because the Eastleigh's and Hamptons of the world would have big, ugly but really effective teams who'd take points off us or beat us in the play offs.

The best managers at this level (i.e. those achieving promotion without spending a fortune) are usually the pragmatic ones who recognise you need big, mobile, hard working players, to play a little bit direct, rarely passing it out from the back, employing some of the dark arts/ ****housery and then make sure you find 2 or 3 players who can play a bit and make a difference and excite the fans. I will add, by direct I don't mean long ball. And, the football isn't necessarily boring/ugly either. Its just a bit more direct, full of tempo, with lots of pressing and hard work from the team. Dowson is a manager like that and so I think its a great appointment."

One of my favourite moments this season was watching a interview with a Hemel Hempstead player after we had beaten them, and he said, rather dejectedly, "They beat us up from front to back." We were playing like the Chelmsford fan pointed out as the way to go. And our squad now looks like it can carry on delivering like Saturday.

A message to "our" keyboard warrior - I can't bear to repeat all your post JH, but please look at the subject title for this thread. yes, it says "Squad Update".

Without extending to more than one sentence, can you please tell me the relevance of your post to the topic, "Squad Update"? I am sure I am not the only supporter to appreciate Gary H's most useful listing of our current squad together with subsequent suggested updates, but what does Dowson, DA1 or CM1 have to do with our current playing squad? Names duly listed as expected, that's as far as this topic needed to go.

Yes, yet again, further total irrelevance and bull*hit from you, of no value to this post. In the future please study, digest and understand the topic subject before striking the "reply" key on your pad, or go to a National League South fans forum talking about Dartford's new manager, and hit reply there.

Thank you. PS how many key pads or boards do you burn out in one year?

Sure bexleylion, I thought it was self-evident why I added it to the thread, but apparently not, so happy to explain the relevance to this thread of the post you don't get.

The thread is about players in our squad, the article I quoted from was also about players, and about the qualities they need for a successful team in this league. It is no point signing players who dont have the qualities needed for this league, but to ensure that, one first of all needs to work out what the qualities needed actually are, and then see if the potential signings match these. The articles focus on physicality gives context to some of the released players, and some of the signings, and the changing focus in signings as the season has gone on.

Well you fooled me JH, you must be much more forward thinking and brighter than me. I must read things more closely and check all the angles before I criticise.

bexleylion, we are all the same, we are Welling fans who want the team to do as well as possible, we may express it differently and go about it differently, and use more or less words, but we all want the same.

I'm glad this thread is here, as I have lost touch with who our squad actually is now! My son made me laugh last night, as he comes to our home games with me, so I asked him what he thought of Jay Simpson, and he said he couldn't remember him. And in the transfer news 7 November Jay Simpson joins the Wings! 2 December Jay Simpson departs. So thanks to GaryH and other posters for getting a clear idea of who is with us now, as I'd lost track.

Our signings recently changed focus from older experienced players, to short term loans for younger less experienced players. This is cool, we can carefully look at players without committing to them too quickly, as a few signings didnt work out this season, and may not have been made if we had seen them really tested first in tough competitive league games that expose any weaknesses in managers and players. Then when the loan ends, and they go back to their home club, we are now on the players radar, so if they leave that club, us and the player have a good idea about each other. The three new loan signings look fine, and hopefully can be extended, or come back in the future.

And that is life, learning lessons. When Kasim and Jay joined us I was excited about an international and ex top division player joining us, then you gradually realise they arrived retired and not match fit, so actually what happened, wasn't a surprise with the benefit of hind sight. So a little careful thought about the player list shows a good picture, of lessons learned, and two wins and two second half goals today show signs of possible progress. We are light years ahead of last season's squad, I really hope most of our current squad can stay with us next season. All the best.

I found this list of our squad of 24 when we started the season. Since then the starred ones have moved on, so interesting 9 of the 24 left, only 15 still with us, hopefully next season we will have more long term team stability, ending with more of the players we started with. I rated Rob Strachan and Taofiq, not particularly impressed with the other ones that left. The retained guys from last season were Manny, Taylor C, Chi, Aaron, and then Jamie rejoined later on in the season, so a core of 5 players from last season still with us. It will be interesting to see which of our current squad stay with us for another season, I guess they also are VERY interested in who the manager next season will be, as that may decide re-signing for many of them. I am not sure if some will have been told by now they are wanted again next season, and if others have been told they are not part of the plans for next season, or if everything is on hold until the season ends and we know which division we are in, and if the manager is being extended for another season or not. One can't knock the team spirit of our current squad, they really play for each other, so I would hope to keep as many as possible, as that team spirit added onto a proper attacking formation and tactics would be really effective.

JH you have made this thread "Squad Update" of no value. I appreciate the point you are trying to make which does not fall into the category of squad update. Your post here should be elsewhere, recycling bin perhaps? Gary's "squad update" entry from 4th January whilst now outdated, is of far more meaningful value to today, rather than like most of your posts, repeat repeat repeat, in fact we could enter you in Mastermind with your specialist subject being, "stating the bloody obvious" over several volumes. Your statwankery is second to none.
Apologies for my Monday lunchtime, far too long rant!

Just seen Sam and Kai have been called up for the CONCACAF Nations league by Guyana. While I wish them well it must cause even bigger problems to the wings with injuries and suspensions.

Bexleylion, I thought it was interesting and worth mentioning 9 of our season starting squad of 24 have gone. So we pad out the squad with short loans, as it makes some (clearly not all) think about wider issues of our signing approach, in which nearly half the squad go pretty soon into the season. I wondered where to put this on the site, this was the closest one to put it. The squad from the beginning of the season has a relevance to who we field now, as our current squad didn't appear out of thin air. And this all has an impact on our performances against more settled sides.

I was grateful for Gary's update, as I had lost sight of who we have, so he helped me catch up. Apologies for finding it interesting to compare where we have come from as a squad at the start of the season to where we are now as a squad. Just a suggestion, don't bother reading stuff that doesn't interest one, or comment on it, it saves a lot of time.
