It was mentioned last night on Sky Sports News that Middlesboro are interested in Dan Nkrumah, even though we announced yesterday afternoon that we have agreed a loan extension until the end of the season.
I have lost track of how many points loan signing Myles has been worth for us in defensive areas, and Daniel could well be as important at the other end of the pitch. Getting these quality loan players is great, as Dipo has shown how we can develop players, so these success stories will make us more attractive for players, and clubs to loan to us.
The manager keeps playing two of our best attacking players Chi and Taylor Maloney in holding/ defensive roles, such a waste, which has held us back so much as an attacking force.
Just imagine the havoc we would create in attack if opponents had to try to defend against the attacking midfield/ striker pace, link up play and finishing of Ade, Taylor Maloney, Daniel, Stefan, and Chi!
I like Stefan lots, his lack of discipline is a shame, it takes attention away from just how good he is. It is so enjoyable to see his inch perfect lay offs to players around him. Being able to do that in fast games, in crowded spaces takes real skill, and team mates will learn a lot from playing with him, his experience is important in a fairly young team.
Jamison let himself down again. Jamison, Jamison, For your own good I'd probably delete your account. Welling is a very tight knit club in places and what people have or haven't done gets around quickly. Incorrectly saying Johnny Hartley had said he had spoken with the Welling manager by phone can easily be proven wrong by asking someone to pass a message on to someone to ask someone to ask someone if such a talk ever happened. It may even merit me telling someone to tell someone to ask someone about legal action against you for the crime of disrespect! Daniel is with us the rest of the season, so I am in a positive place so I'll nobly forgive you, this time.
OK, being a bit more serious, I found a great thing on YouTube making fun of Neville Southall, Graeme Souness and Roy Keane, it is so well done, particularly Roy Keane, making fun of the way he goes on off tangent rants, I love bits getting upset over Button Moon and Gary Birtles. And whenever things go bad with Welling remember the line from the clip, keep your rage in a ball in your stomach (so much the sort of thing Roy Keane says). Something I learned is one has to shape ones team around the strengths in the squad. So if one has three really good strikers, it makes sense to play them all in attack. So Daniel, Ade and Stefan in attack, with Taylor M behind them attacking centrally, and Chi on the midfield left wing. When we played Ade up front on his own we were so predictable and one dimensional, opponents double marked him, and cut out our attacking threat. Add the fact we hardly ever had anyone else in the opponents' area, and it is no wonder we stopped scoring. But with five players all able to dribble, assist and shoot, opponents would be totally confused about who to defend against.
Antony has got one league goal so far, but I know from his pre-season he has tons of potential we just haven't seen yet in the league. I think it is that he is one of those players who is best when they just go for it, without over thinking things. Pre season he scored tons, as his play was so direct, just get the ball, run at goal and shoot. I know he is now against much better defences in the league, I think he is a bit in limbo, unsure if he should pass or go for goal, or if he is a striker or a midfield player. So if he just goes back to his very direct attacking play his goals will flow.
Daniel is so direct in being solely focused on going to the goal, I am sure Antony will see that and hopefully add that directness back to his own game. Antony had a quiet first half of the season, but hopefully will become our sixth top quality attacking player. There is a video of Antony's highlights on YouTube, he has much more skill than we have sometimes seen, it will be great if he can play like that with us YouTube Antony Papadopoulos | Highlights 19/20 & 20/21 www.youtube.com/watch
Football managers see what works for other teams and nick their ideas to use for ones own team. PSG have a 3 player attack, Neymar and Mbappe up front with Messi just behind them, that works perfectly. Liverpool also play 3 players in attack and that works excellently for them too. So similarly we could easily have Taylor Maloney playing a linking role just behind the two strikers Ade and Stefan, as he is great with assists, shoots from distance, but cant do that most of the time at present as he is misused as a defensive midfielder, with Daniel in midfield.
Or one can have a front three, in a 3 4 3 formation, or 4 3 3 formation, Daniel, Ade and Stefan, with Taylor again just behind to pull the central midfield strings. We've scored 33 goals from 24 games as we are set up so defensively.
Talking of strikers, there was fan excitement pre-season about Ade joining us from Dartford, as getting him was a real coup. As this is my first full season with Welling, back then Id not seen him play, so didnt know what the fuss was about. Having seen him now it is great to see why, and what a great addition he is, so driven as a player. Last season was his best ever as a striker, with 11 league goals, and he is already on 10 with us, so in the form of his life which is so enjoyable to watch. Ade got one goal after December/ January, something like that, Im not a Dartford follower so dont know the background to why that drop off happened, but he scores consistently with us all through the season, so I am so pleased for him his move to us worked out so well for him, and in 2 goals time he will set a new personal best for a season, with tons of games after to set an even better new personal best. I will always be traumatised by the memory of Tom Derry in attack (did he ever score?) but I survived Tom Derry and Ade has helped my recovery.
I talked with a couple of important club people who told me they don't read the forum as they find it toxic. When I started posting I managed to upset some folk, so I read through the forum to get a sense of the fans' values. And actually, it is not toxic at all, it is people just being very honest and direct with their views, which is actually a relief to do, in a society that increasingly tells us what is right and wrong to think, and what one shouldn't say.
It puzzled me how some here falsely said I had said I had spoken by phone with our guvnor, when I had never said that I had done that. I dont mind defending myself on things I have said, but it gets silly defending myself against things I haven't said! But I know this site isn't malicious, so I realised where that misunderstanding came from. I remember in the past saying here how impressed I was with the chairman fan engagement, as club engagement with fans is so important. I had sent him suggestions for things to improve attendances (advertising forthcoming fixtures in posters outside the stadium so passers by can see our matches and hopefully come to try a match, that sort of thing) and he took the time to talk on the phone about those suggestions. So I've realised people here remembered wrong, and thought I'd said I'd spoken with the manager, when I had actually said the chairman.
Bloody hell, I remember Tom Derry in defence in that cup match, he actually played perfectly there. I swear Warren is a comedian in disguise, I burst out laughing when I saw Tom was in defence, just as I did when I heard a match report where we were behind, looking for a goal, and had the tactical genius idea of playing defender Manny in attack. I simply couldn't believe it when we didn't score and then conceded. But playing star striker Dipo on the wing still makes me smile, so I am ready for Ade and Stefan to be unexpectedly tested out as defenders any match now! Sadly I never saw Kieron St Aime, but I will check his highlights on YouTube, but need to put enough time aside for that as I'm sure they'll be very extended... Dulwich on Saturday, hmm, is that the scent of three points?!
Kieron St Aime was before my time, so I looked at his record to see what I missed, and he scored 2 goals in 38 games for us, with at least one a penalty. There is some YouTube film if you search his name, the one of him warming up "Kieron St Amie warmup ft. Desire, fitness and dedication" will make Jamison cry with nostalgia over his long departed hero, but made me laugh about the rigor mortis comments from the fans, and there is film there called "St.Aimie's Sports Academy U7's in action!" which shows he hasn't lost his pace... But there is hope for Jamison. Kieran is now retired, aged 34, so fits the criteria of our recent striker signings, so may yet come back to fill in the gap left by Jay Simpson, who allegedly once played for us. Daniel was an unused sub yesterday for Orient, he clearly has tons of talent, what was it, 2 games, 1 goal, 50% strike rate!
Another team's YouTube fan chat channel had someone say it was group therapy for them, and I like that, as that is so true about this site too. Some people think this is toxic.com, but it isn't, it is the group therapy refuge from all those times where we have a good game (drawing and then letting in a late goal that loses us the match) and bad games (drawing and then letting in two late goals that loses us the match).
I believe Jamie Day was a player who became our manager, long term, many future seasons in the future, it would surely be madness not to appoint Kieron St Amie as our manager, so he can continue his success with us! Then Jamison will tell him, "Kieron, you were always my favourite player! I have never forgotten the two goals you scored in two seasons with us".
