Welcome 3 points. Won't get carried away thought. Could of gone either way in truth and we were fortunate imo to come out with the victory.

Up front we look powder puff. Gavin isn't for me. Alexander was better but from reading in-between the lines didn't want to play for the manager anymore.

Thought the loan gk looked v solid. Chi, parry had good games.

Interesting to see the owner wasn't at the game rather at cray wanderers.

The owner was at the game, I had a discussion with him beforehand

The obvious question for me at the start of the season was "where is all this money coming from?" and what does the owner expect to see as a return on the investment.

I remember Goldberg and his pal (Roots?? forgot his name) telling me that the club's playing budget could only be £2.5k per week to breakeven with all the other costs associated with running the club. When I heard we were up to £14k at one point at the start of the season, it does beg the question?  Not to mention all the other stuff that was being spent off the field too.

Ahead of the Bath game the manager said we had nearly gone only 6 weeks ago, only for someone to sort something that was outstanding.

We threw money around at the start of the season, a 25 player squad including an unnecessary 3rd keeper, Rob Strachan who was paid but never even got to play a game for us, other fringe players hardly used. Maybe throwing money at the problem trying to buy safety. Or for a push to top 7, as early on we were as high as 5th in the table.

Since then we released tons of players and brought in lots of cheap short term signings or loans, (I guess here, as I dont know their wages, but most are young fringe players, or players without clubs) trying to get by on a (I guess here again) massively reduced budget. I thought this change may be to keep as much money as possible for a push next season, but now it looks as though there may have been no choice.

It all seems very odd, we have now got all catering income after stopping sub contracting, so should make more money there. We've had postponements that held back some cash flow. Our cup runs in profitable cups ended soon, so that limited income. The owners didn't press the manager to change his ideas early enough, now it looks as though they aren't running this on a sound financial footing either. Last season our income was around £360K, this season it should be higher, but apparently we are almost broke. It is why I think whatever is going on stops being football related. It is a concerning puzzle. Where's the money gone?

What money? What do you know about club finances? Aren't most football clubs run at a loss? Why would Welling be any different?

Nothing to do with Welling, but I listened to Radio Kent on way back from game on Saturday. They run an interview with one of the current Maidstone owners. He claimed they have made a profit each season for the last 3 years. So can be done, apparently.

Clubs publish accounts, so one can see their finances from there, who are operating profitably, and who aren't.

I have consistently thought we have the right players, just some being used in the wrong positions, and that our fixed Plan A stopped working 6 months ago, so we needed changes.

Nice that lots rated Manny, that change of Manny to a holding central midfielder is such an unexpected interesting development, I would love to know his stats of headers won against Bath, he seemed to win everyone he went for. He has always been great in the air, but makes mistakes on the ground that led to soft goals conceded, as he was the last line of defence. But as a holding midfielder he still wins in the air, but if he makes a mistake has back up of a defender behind him. So this clever change really helps, as now really great attacking players like Taylor M and Chi can attack more, knowing Manny can cover them in defence and may solve the problem of us not getting enough guys forward when we attack.

We had a much better shape against Bath, didnt seem to leave big gaps. Stefans move from attack to midfield supporting role could be another clever switch of position and good the manager is finally thinking more creatively how to use the squad and not just sticking to fixed players in fixed positions in a constantly unsuccessful Plan A.

On the way out I heard a mum say enthusiastically to her little kid, that was a great game. That was nice to hear, coming immediately after the toxic game on Tuesday pleased for all involved with Welling it was a step forward.

They do and what do Weliling's accounts show for the last 3 years?

£87K profit 2022, £25K loss 2021, £122K loss 2020, with some years figures being affected by Covid.

So last year's positive return, and this season's higher attendances and increased revenue from catering etc, makes me wonder why we are suddenly so short of money, unless it is as simple as either we overspent earlier on this season, and maybe later on as well, or the accounting will later on raise unusual questions.

By all accounts it wasn't a great game of football at all, but looking at the table and where we could of been on Sunday morning it's a huge huge win!
Still not safe by any means and two tough games to come, hopefully we can dig in and find a way lime Saturday to grind them put.
