So, that concludes our pre-season and hopefully the injuries sustained tonight were minor. Great to see the clip on the Twitter (X) feed of Welling v Luton where we won 2-1 in the FA Cup (1st round proper). We had Plymouth Argyle away in the next round and, remarkably, our next game after Luton, tonight, is against Truro... at Plymouth! (albeit Plymouth Parkway). Up The Wings!!
Wasn't there but I see Danny giving some praise to number 17 a trialist, any good?
I know who the other trialist is at left back, pretty decent player and another one whos been on love Island!
Couldn't make it either but have to be pleased with the comments from Danny. Looks an even tougher league this season so a bit of a concern regarding injuries. We are scoring goals though and I think some players will be back to strengthen the squad quite soon, touchwood!
Warren left on 6th June, so great what Danny has already achieved in such a short time. Normally football managerial jobs only come up when the previous manager has been sacked for bad results, and the new manager has problems of taking over a losing team full of players he doesn't rate. But Danny has been able to take over with a whole new start, get who he rates. So last night I thought how much quicker we are now compared to last season when we had midfielders like Medy, James Vaughan, I mean James Dunne, Yaser... Danny mentioned he wanted young hungry players, and against Luton for the first time I really saw what he meant, and what a difference it makes. It's promising!
In our first games we had a big gap behind our striker, so didnt have enough bodies forward to score, players didnt really see it as their job to help push up and attack. That problem has been fixed, and it is good, 3 goals against Beckenham, 2 against Luton. We still hardly create any chances for our striker to run onto, but hopefully will soon!
I had a quick chat with Mitchell Dickinson who was watching at a game, he was injured, so hopefully we will see him soon.
Hopefully it's all coming together nicely for Saturday - thank god pre season is done and dusted! Not being negative but it just isn't for me. I understand its a necessity, especially at this level and for building a new team.....but nothing ranks alongside proper competitive football, the desire for 3 points, the optimism that a new season brings etc. We all start on zero again!
Very much looking forward to Saturday now - hope all the pre season effort has paid off
Exactly. There were times when we would attend practically every pre-season fixture, home and away, season ticket holder or not. Nowadays, it's much more about the league fixtures for us and, as you say Treacle, the 3 points on offer & that non-league, Step 2 atmosphere. Agree that pre-season is a necessity though. Must mention the various cups as well - a good source of revenue for the club plus some great memories.
I was wondering why the pre-season friendly attendances were comparatively low compared to our league games, so this offputting aspect of the trialists answers my question.
Mark always does great match reports (ignore the drunken bad tempered comment last season by Johnny Hartley!) but now we know how much Mark likes trialists I wonder if Danny will give Mark a nightmare next pre-season, having to report on the following squad for a pre-season game: 1 Trialist A, 2 Trialist B, 3 Trialist C, 4 Trialist D, 5 Trialist E, 6 Trialist F, 7 Trialist G, 8 Trialist H, 9 Trialist I, 10 Trialist J, 11 Trialist K.
Our number 24 Harvey Browne looked promising against Luton, looking forward to seeing which young players make a breakthrough this season.

Triallists, managers openly admitting that the result doesn't matter and its all about fitness, swapping half the team at half time etc. I get the point of the games for the management team and players, but as a fan I find it a dire watch personally. I need to feel the buzz/pressure/anxiety of 3 points on the line or a game in the next round of a cup! Only 1 day to go!
Def felt similar this preseason. Its interesting how it's been managed as from the xis used and minutes given I have no idea with what the xi will look like tomorrow.
The great thing about Danny's pre-season is he gave all players a balanced chance to show him what they can do, rather than him just playing his favourite 11 and not really letting anyone else show their abilities.
The problem with his predecessor was he always had the same five players who couldn't get into the starting 11 or bench, because he had fallen out with them, or didn't rate them, so they didn't get a chance to show they deserved a starting spot, so they were wasting their time. I chatted with a club insider who told me the manager had lost the dressing room after Fisher in September last season. It didn't surprise me, as if one has disillusioned squad players always out of the team that creates an unsettled squad. We have a few injuries, but in a few games we will soon see the regular first 11, and having seen the pre-season games one could make an educated guess on who they'll be. I already really like new players Lewis and Crossley so much, and other new players will settle in and catch the eye too.
Respect to all the guys going to the Truro match, with the very early start to the long journey. With the two triallists in the Luton game being signed up by us, that means without realising it at the time we saw both halves played by fully signed up Welling players. And lots of promising parts in that game.
Something I realised is in our league it is almost less important who the players are than who the manager is. Dartford's Dowson, Steve King, Kuttrieb and Danny Bloor pretty much every season get their teams into play offs, despite many player changes. With so many teams totally rebuilding their teams it is silly trying to predict who will do well in the new season as the new teams are so different to last season. But when managers are the same there is hidden continuity. Like Taylor Curran and Ivan Toney I am totally opposed to the idea of betting on football. But www.oddschecker.com/football/english/non-league/national-league-south/england-national-league-south/winner is interesting, just to get an idea of who the bookmakers consider the strongest teams and how they see Welling. They top rate Torquay and Yeovil, who we didnt see last season. Then Eastbourne, Maidstone, Dartford and Havant, which for various reasons could make sense. Tonbridge Angels have had some really good pre-season results, and good signings, and would be my outside choice for a surprise play off spot. We are roughly 15th in the betting. There is a YouTube guy who reviews the season who I like, as he really knows his stuff about our league, worth a watch to see his predictions and write up on all the clubs' new signings. Maybe he is realistic about our finishing position. www.youtube.com/watch
With Danny, his first season with Eastbourne was just settling in, building his team, then the next 3 seasons were three top 8 finishes. That could be the case with us, this new season gelling and then next season game on!
