We will always remember yesterday's performance/result and how the tide may well have been turning. If we do happen to stay up, by some minor miracle, the credit must go to Danny Bloor as this game would most certainly be considered the catalyst. If we go down, which is more likely, Danny must be exonerated as he should have been given the fighting chance to keep us up. He deserved that, especially after this fantastic performance at Hemel.
Last season, we kept our manager at a similar stage, which made sense, & he duly kept us up (quite comfortably in the end).
This season, our manager has had to double up as a magician and after achieving, what appeared to be, a potentially season defining moment at Hemel Hempstead, gets his marching orders.
We know what we saw yesterday. We also know that the likely outcome would be relegation... but not definite.
That team yesterday, those fans yesterday & that manager yesterday would have fought all the way to Slough away. It might have been enough.
I missed the game, but Mark's match report made me really kick myself for that, as I missed the chance to see Antony in attack, which I would have loved to have seen to see if it worked as well as I thought it could. Mark's report suggests he had more influence later on when switching back to midfield, and I trust Mark's accurate reporting, but hopefully Antony will be given more opportunities to play up front, as there is lots of potential and he has shown the skill to anticipate where to run for tap ins.
With all the drama, it suddenly struck me I hadnt thanked Danny for all he has done to stabilise the club in such difficult circumstances as he fixed so much that was broken.
Football is a small world, no doubt Danny will soon be back managing, hopefully breaking his unlucky run of two teams owned by people that don't really get football. So next time he brings a team to play Welling I will do my best to resist having a long pre match talk with him, but hopefully thank him after the match for bringing a smile back to the Wings in such messed up times.
