Nigel and Mark gave characteristically honest match commentary, Rod's post match interview gave a similarly honest view of the game.

As expected, Farnborough's tactics were falling down when beaten in a challenge, and the ref fell for it. Teams reflect their manager, if one has a dishonest manager, one has a dishonest team, and some may think Farnborough amply show this to be the case. I remember watching them at our place, and being glad I am not a Farnborough fan, as their football is so dull, and judging by the low attendance last night Farnborough fans may think the same, they are set up for mid table averageness.

The problem last night seemed to be a lack of quality passing in the final third, which was our problem before Rod arrived, but which he's solved up to this game. But us playing unusually inaccurately under the final third with Rod last night isn't a total surprise, as we've had a run of tiring games against top sides on heavy pitches, three times playing a player short after sending offs, and it sounds as though all that effort since Rod arrived may have finally caught up with us last night, with tiredness behind some of the inaccurate passing.

We have a much better bench these days, so can rotate the squad without weakening it. Great Chiori was in the squad, he impressed me when he played faultlessly on his debut, Rod'll have a nice surprise when he sees what a fine player we have in Chiori, as long as he is not too rusty after his break.

After 8 matches unbeaten we can't be too downbeat with that result.  Poor first half from us and poor both halves from the ref, it seems like they're actively recruiting refs who don't understand the difference between a foul and a tackle and fall for appeals constantly.  They're getting mugged off by players and if we don't start doing the same then we won't get much from the officials.  I'd rather the ref stamp it out early so we don't have to stoop to that level but seeing Braintree and Farnborough hoodwink the refs, why not?

Again I thought we looked tired but the players have been putting in a right shift in recent weeks.  Second half we were better but seemed hesitant to get down the line and play broke down when playing down the middle.

Disappointing that the unbeaten league run has come to an end but, rather like the recent Truro game, if we only perform for one half then we will make life difficult for ourselves.

Farnborough aren't easy on the eye but they are effective. On the whole we defended the corners and long throws very well but, if you concede so many, then the law of averages says that at some extra point they will create an opportunity and so it proved. With and without the ball we simply weren't at the races. Second half was a vast improvement and we really should have got a point. Green hit the post and Byrd had two chances - the second of which he should have buried. Our attacking players looked tired and it's not really surprising after their efforts of the last few weeks. I would like to see the wing backs be a bit more aggressive going forwards at times. As has been said elsewhere the officials were poor but that has been the case for most of the season. With the current manager and the likes of Ellul and the two Grants in the team we simply have to be more streetwise on the pitch. I'm afraid it's a case of " if you can't beat them then join them...."

Two more tough away games to come, especially on Saturday, but we can't fault the effort and commitment we are getting from this group. When we fell behind earlier in the season we did fold a few times but we are far more resilient now. A repeat of the home result against Yeovil at the weekend will do me..!!

Up the Wings!

Noticed at the time that Reece was appealing for something after their goal.  The video (link below) appears at first glace to appear he had a good claim for offside with the forward potentially being "active"

To be fair, Farnborough deserved to win.

I don't think he was blocking the 'keepers view so wouldn't be deemed as active.

Farnborough have put their highlights up, and looking at their goal, their player looks in an offside position, but it could be argued by them he wasn't interfering with play.

What's disappointing about the goal is that it is a typical Welling bad goal to concede, the guy who got it was unmarked, so wasn't marked by a Welling player standing between the Farnborough player and our goal, so their player had an unobstructed shot on goal. That is really poor defending by us, as Rod has done great at telling the players about marking closely, but bad old habits still creep in from time to time, and if one gets basics wrong like not defending tight and goal side, sooner or later the opposition will score with an unblocked shot.

Talking of set pieces, and to cheer us up from the disappointment of losing, here's a funny clip of a Dorking player enjoying winding up the opposition fans by deliberately taking the corner from the wrong place, and being amused at how angry some get, while other fans enjoy it as they get the joke and realise he is taking the mick. www.youtube.com/shorts/aTHc9Xinb6U
