Bad time to be playing Hemel as they and Tonbridge are the only 2 unbeaten teams in the league.
But after playing 6 games tonight we are mid table, above well fancied teams Bath, Maidstone, Chelmsford, and St Albans who've also played 6, and above Aveley who've played 7, so overall a very pleasing sound start to the season.
Lets wait for that thin line of 10 games played before casting despondency upon the season Mark. And remember, we have a game in hand albeit a toughie. And would agree, it's not the greatest of starts, but two wins from six games is survival form.

Whilst it's very early in the season as Mark points out we are 16th out of 24, hardly "midtable" and likely to fall further down the table after a full fixture list tomorrow.
Poor defending and look out of depth up front. With the budget we have (one of the lowest in league), I suppose we cant expect much more. Early days but with this squad and we had three or four clear cut chances, but we need another attacking midfielder or striker imo. Not enough up top.
I'm looking at the overall picture from the first 6 games we played, as some just look at the latest result or two, rather than looking at the season's picture so far. I'm not buying into the despair about our defence, until 2 games ago we'd just conceded 2 goals in our first 4 games, only one team had conceded less than us, but we were fine defensively with Rod last season, and won't keep letting as many as the last 2 games. The two losses are a drag, but there are background things, Hemel are top of the table, and we finished a man short against Chesham. Now we have Torquay next, who are 4th with 4 wins so far.
As brother bexleylion says, the postponement of the Worthing game until October is worth taking into account, which is why Monday's table is good as it shows most teams on 6 games, including us, so gives an accurate picture until games are played Tuesday. So looking before Tuesday's games I consider us midtable, as we are 1 point behind the 12th placed team, so hardly any difference between us and them.
Weird how football is, well fancied Maidstone (who have scored 3 goals so far this season, we've scored 8) play my favourite other team last season Chelmsford Tuesday night in a game to pull out of the relegation zone.
I was at Hemel this evening. The score was 4-2 but in my eyes that score didnt reflect the balance of play. We had at least 3 clear chances in the first half. All of those chances were on target and their keeper pulled of two great saves and a wonder save to keep his team at 1-0. One of the saves even the Welling fans behind the goal praised him for.
Hemel defended their 18 yard box really well for most of the game but we seemed to be lacking numbers when defending ours. For a couple of their goals we seemed to lose the ball whilst attacking in their goal then 30 seconds later picking the ball out of our net. So frustrating to say the least. We played some nice football tonight even a blind man will tell you that but as Rod Stringer said we have a soft underbelly. (Message for Anointed Get nasty mate. You are 6ft 5 or 6. A big athletic lump. Start using your physique. Make the CB life a nightmare. Do it or this league will eat you up)
Overall I cannot say we deserved that score line but we really need to harden up and be horrible to play against
Ref was quite good tonight. Very even handed.
PS. Good luck to Polo and his wife who I understand are off to live in Dubai. Im sure Polo will be the first and probably only member of the WUSA Dubai branch.
7 goals conceded in 2 games tells its own story......and if it wasn't for the keeper in both games, it could have been an even worse story as in both games he pulled off some great stops to deny very clear goal scoring opportunities. I agree with Rod's post match presser to a degree - our play in the middle part of the field was good at times. High tempo, quick to close them down and some nice quick paced passing. However, we were woeful in both boxes and until the laws of the game change, that is always going to end badly. Taylor-Crossdale is not a centre forward - never will be. He was pathetic on Saturday and his stupidity cost us any sort of chance in a game we were already struggling in. Imagine the surprise then to see him named as the lone striker again, and if he persists with him then I'm afraid there will be many more days like this. No physicality whatsoever, lacks bottle, and even not really that quick - he's not up to it. He'll get half a dozen spectacular goals a season but his overall play doesn't contribute enough to the team.
At the back, you could drive a bus through the back line. Rod says it could have been 7-12 to us, it could just as easily have been the same score in reverse. We looked solid until the Chesham game, so perhaps its a blip or caused by injuries but we look anything but solid at the moment. Big Dave Winfield looked totally out of sorts in both of the last 2 games - are we set up to play to his strengths?
On the plus side, the lad from Orient looked mustard when he came on and was good to see Annointed get his goal - can only hope that spells the end for MTC who frankly can do one given his total lack of effort, application and physicality.

Two disappointing results yes but its a marathon not a sprint. Sure now things are settling and transfer window shut well start to see loan additions to fill in the gaps.
My favourite player to watch last season was Crossley Lima, it was enjoyable to see him on his football journey, trying to work his way up the levels, as he was playing his first season in such a high division, and you could see his effort to concentrate as he learned to deal with faster and more skillful opponents than he had ever played against before, He got signed by another NLS side, so he cracked NLS.
This season Elliot and Anointed are just as interesting to watch, for the same reasons. Elliot seems to have already got to the speed of our games, Anointed less so, and didnt make the match first 16 for a couple of our earliest games, and didnt shine pre-season either. In his arrival interview Anointed said he wanted to prove himself at this level and higher, so it is interesting to see his journey, and if it happens for him or not, as it is way too early to tell just now. I think he's played 3 or 4 games, not full 90 minutes, and has scored twice already, including last night, so some promise, if he and the team plays to his strengths he could be the answer to lots of our striking questions. One game he played for us he made a massive difference to our attack, so don't despair, there is hope!
We can't tell too much from just 6 games, 3 games ago fans talked about our promotion hopes, 2 games later talk is of relegation! Rod's given the guys every opportunity, I agree with Jimmy, Rod used loans to bring in Jason Adigun and Sonny Fish who turned things round for us, and at the moment the strikers have the excuse midfield arent creatively setting up enough chances for the forward players, Rod's already released a couple of players, it wouldnt surprise me to see a couple more go, there's 3 midfielders and a striker I dont yet rate in our squad, which is way better than previous squads where so many had big questions against them.
I think this is the 1st time to an extent I have disagreed with Rod's assessment. I think he was watching a different game last night. Yes I agree we started brightly and were playing the better football but as it got wetter Hemel got better.
2nd half we again started the brighter and deserved our equaliser but the half turned into a cup tie for me. End to end with some industrial tackles flying in from both teams but given the wet conditions I think the referee was good to let a lot go for both teams and let the game flow which for a neutral made for an interesting entertaining game. In the end though I did feel Hemel deserved to win the game. They were bigger and stronger and were winning the 2nd balls. Fortunately our late 2nd goal reduced the goal difference.
In our defence though, forgive the pun, we have lost our right full back and now 3 left backs. Playing Burchell right and Wells left, for most of the match yesterday out of position didn't help our cause. I would note when everyone is fit our defence is very strong and I think it will do well this season. So too early to press the panic button just yet. I have been concerned with the forward line and if we will score enough goals. I have to disagree about Martell Taylor-Crossdale though. In fact I voted for him as player of the month. I missed Bath away and Chesham at home, though I've seen the highlights and he was stupid to get himself sent off against Chesham, but in the 4 games I've seen he scored a beauty of a goal to win the match against Aveley, He was one of the best players against Farnborough along with Chuckwu and Martin. He scored a goal at Hornchurch which I felt wasn't offside and should have stood. I do agree he probably isn't a centre forward but wide with Anointed in the centre and Charlie Pegrum the other side, who I thought was player of the match on his debut last night, could be formidable.
Be interesting to ask Jimmy who he doesn't rate as I believe it's too early to draw conclusions. P6 W2 D1 L3 is a reasonable start and certainly mid table form. It could easily be W3 D1 L2 as I thought we should have and could have won at Hornchurch plus the whole football world agree we were robbed of a penalty away at Bath. As Rod says we have a lot of injuries and a few walking wounded at the moment. I certainly don't think it's all doom and gloom.
In answer to Alan's question, I had a really interesting talk with one of our great match reporters who told me they didnt like to criticise individual players as they already have a lot of pressure. I understand that point of view, but I dont agree with it, as if one can't handle criticism you shouldn't be playing football, as the whole game is all about opinions, so you can't sulk if opinions go against one and only allow positive feedback to count.
I don't have an opinion yet about Mardell, he's a player it feels I've not seen enough of to have a well founded view. I really like Treacle's comments here, as he is a player so has a fellow player's perspective on Welling players, so I take Treacles comments with Mardell seriously, and will look and see if I agree. It's like Alan's views on Danny seemed harsh, but actually in retrospect were spot on and Alan was the first to see it before others also realised what was going on there.
My question marks on the current squad have big qualifications, but they are Gene Kennedy, TJ Bramble and Cameron Andrews in midfield, and Reece in attack. I'm not saying they won't go out and prove me wrong, and I hope they do, but at the moment they dont convince me that they are influential enough, I dont get what end product they create, they seem to coast along, in my eyes at least. But I am also trying to work out if my reservations are realistic, maybe within our budget they are as good as we can get for the money? And also they are young, so still open to improvement, so I see Gene Kennedy increasingly taking defenders on, and not being afraid to have shots, taking more responsibility. I suppose the point is some of our players are still open to improvement, like Anointed, Gene, and others, and it is enjoyable to watch them on their journey. But the players have the last laugh as they can always prove the doubters wrong. Hemel looked scarily good in attack in the extended Bath highlights it feels we met them at the wrong time, as their manager was on fire with excitement in his post match interview after beating us, and that thing about them unexpectedly being top of the table must have been such an incentive for them going into the match.
We've 7 points from 6 games, if we maintained that form for the rest of the season we'd be on 53 points, enough to keep up.
Rod has had to juggle the strikers round to get a good look at them. I think answers to striking problems are often hidden in the current squad, last season midfielder Kain Adom began as not even a starter, then was switched to attack and largely solved the striking issues. I wonder if Elliot and Anointed could be the same this season, as they successfully played together in Wingate and Finchley, I've noticed their really good passing connection with each other in their games with us from already having played so much together, so think them having a run of games together in attack would work well.
Like many I was perplexed when I saw the starting XI on Monday night and even more so when I saw the formation..?! We conceded 2 goals in the first 4 matches and, Chesham apart, our back three/five had performed well individually and collectively yet, with one of them out injured, we change the positions of three of the remaining four and introduce another player who was injured pre season and hadn't played a competitive minute all season..?!
Having said all that, one wonder strike apart, we dominated for twenty minutes but, as in other games, missed gilt edged chances to score which we could or rather should have taken. With one out and out forward the ball needs to stick and we need to take the pressure off the defence but that didn't happen. When Anointed came on he asked more questions of the Hemel defence and brought his team mates into the game. He now has two goals in three and a half league games and he won't be doing too badly if he maintains that ratio.
It's still very early in the season and I trust that Rod, Kevin and Co will get things right (budget and injuries permitting) and the Orient lad certainly looked promising on Monday night. We need a bit of patience and hopefully we will get consistently better results and performances as the season progresses.
I looked Anointed up on Transfermarkt, and saw my view of his career (that he'd come from Wingate and we are his breakthrough into NLS) is wrong, as actually this is his third time in the NLS, as 2 years ago he played 1 NLS game for Cheshunt, and 5 years before that, when he must have been so young, he played 1 NLS North game, for a minute, for Salford. Anointed's first goal looked a bit of a relieved celebration to get the first goal, whereas he really loved scoring the goal against Hemel, and I hadnt realised he's only 23, so still tons to learn.
A strange things about football is the difference of potential between players, some already as good as they'll ever be, others have tons of improvement in them, Rod has a young squad with tons of potential improvement in it, one of the many reasons why fans already worrying about relegation (irrespective of the fact we only have 40 games left to save ourselves!) miss the important point this young team will get better as the season goes on as we'll improve individually and as a team.
We've got Torquay next, who are 4th, but looking at their results they're mainly against lower teams, I knew in advance Hemel was a serious obstacle, but more positive about us against Torquay, if we win it I know the fans who only judge us on the last 1 or 2 performances will jump back to the optimistic play off thinking!
I am investigating the identity of an unnamed youthful and joyful PVR pitch invader in the 1980s, I wonder, is The Poet able to identify this mysterious individual?!
Hemel's second goal was scored after TJ Bramble was too casual about preventing a cross, that was then scored from. Torquay's game on Saturday is quite focused on running down the wing and scoring from crosses, so let's hope we do better at cutting out the Torquay crosses and blocking their players on the end of the crosses. They are the sort of team likely to end in th eplay offs, so interesting to see how we cope against them. It seems this season more than others teams are having lots of early season injuries, maybe a sign of how this league gets more and more competitive each season.

Although not relevant to this particular thread, the 'on the pitch investigation' does indeed sound both fab and fascinating, Mr. Hartley.
N.B. To assist you with your 'investigation', you may be confusing Welling's ground with another London ground (assuming you count Welling's ground as a 'London' ground). We are talking approximately 1981, Mr. Hartley.
Also, attention to detail is paramount - Blackburn Rovers at home 1989, arrived late & despite best efforts didn't make the terrace & most certainly not the pitch (we lost 1-0). Made the pub afterwards though with many who were inside the ground.
Stick to your super stats and home game analysis Johnny as they tend to be more accurate. Now... quickly post something about Hemel to link in and justify this post... we beat Hemel Hempstead 2-1 at their place last season but we lost 4-2 on this occasion. We missed some chances but hats off to The Tudors as they have made an impressive start to the season.
Johnny's bubbles, they flew so high,
But Ravens are near, I'll give them a try,
Far too expensive, entry and things,
I'll stick to the home games and stay with THE WINGS.
