Can someone tell me what the 50/50 competition is and who runs it. I noticed tickets on sale at the cup game in the week. What is the likely prize? Is it 50% to the winner and 50% to the organiser?
Hornchurch had a competition called 50/50 at the cup game and a Welling fan won £150.
That's exactly what it is - easy way to raise money for the club so no problem with that. I always buy tickets for this or the raffle - it would be nice to know where the money has gone.
The reason I asked was that I heard the bloke who won it on Wednesday only got £20. Surely they sold more than 40 tickets.
Hornchuch sell 300 tickets from a 1002 crowd so by the same equation Welling should have sold over 200 from a 712 crowd.
Even if only 1 in 10 bought a ticket the prize should have been about £35.
Something doesn't sound right here.
I know the Golden Goal only used to pay £20 because I won it one week. It was the reason I stopped buying tickets.
There was another club not a million miles from Welling who ran a Golden Goal competition. They never announced the time of the goal until half-time. I got very suspicious about that one. It gave them plenty of time to pick out a ticket near the time that hadn't been sold.
I'm not saying anyone is up to no good at Welling. I just find it hard to believe that only 40 tickets were sold. Perhaps someone made a mistake.
Only 40 tickets were sold on the Wednesday nite which meant that the prize was indeed £20 that is always the way on an evening game the ticket sales are always down and have been ever since i have become involved with the w.s.u. It is also the reason we dont do the 49club for a midweek game as we would never sell it perhaps if MORE people were willing to part with a £1 we would make more money.
I can promise there is nowt dodge there YOU HAVE MY WORD!
People just do not support the WSU, thats why its still struggling. When a democratic, elected group is forthcoming MAYBE people will support it. AND please... dont say all are welcome as the committee was self made and not democratic.
Steve Holly and Paul Pettit walked away from WSU and it did lose £1000 on the Tommy Smith fiasco where you had to pay him a grand NOT to turn up!
WSU is poorly supported and self elected, BRUNO asked a question on here that they declined to answer. WSU organised meet manager and quizes... WSU aka Welling United FC .
PS Spud its not abusive, PS Spud theres still 4 grand in WUISA... PS Spud WUISA have never lost a grand on an event and WUISA was well supported, so why isnt WSU?
Only thing that will work is...
Public ballot for new committee, Bank account to have no signatories from the club, A constitution. All spending of monies to be VOTED on not just Given to Graham as the last few grand was!

Jgfc makes some good points, but I don't think that it can be said that the 50-50 is about people not supporting WSU. I think that issue is that we have the 50-50 and also have a raffle. I think the raffle is much better supported given the amont of tickets sold. I'd be interested to know how much that raises and where the money goes. I always buy raffle tickets but don't alawys see the 50-50.
Perhaps people running it in to the ground is one reason it is not supported?
People who have a question come see people on the desk on match day to be fair what ever i say it is always twisted on here perhaps certain people dont want anything to succeed.
I have loads of people asking me questions at games home and away including many many plaudits from ordinary supporters (i.e nothing to do with WSU) for the events etc that are held each season.
I would much prefer that anyone who wishes to slate any fund raising activity to either join in or keep quiet. It takes a lot of peoples time and effort to make the events work and in 99% of cases work they do too!
SAG goes from strength to strength each year and it will break records again this year.
So everyone on this board that hasn't joined do it now!!
As they say at election time if you don't vote you don't have a say. Demoralising genuine helpers will get us absolutely nowhere but I guess that is where some want us to be>
I wasn't at the Hornchurch match so I can't comment on that 50/50 but I did win the 50/50 at the Histon match and I got £40. It was more than I expected and I was delighted. Perhaps people didn't feel like coughing up the extra quid last week when they had already paid to come in (no season tickets of course) bought a programme etc. I'm also sure I read somewhere that a lot of people came into the ground quite late on which could explain the poor sales. Personally I like the 50/50 and the golden goal, although I'll always cherish the hairdryer I won in the raffle.
As for WSU how could it be democratically elected when most people aren't interested as their commitment to Welling starts and finishes with the match on Saturday? From what I've heard anyone is welcome to attend their meetings. I may not agree with everything they do but at least they are trying to move the club forward and raise funds to do so. It's too easy to have big ideas but these are (presumably) working people who give up their own time to organise events etc. If other people want to get involved and give up their time I suspect they would be welcomed. Just sitting back and criticising doesn't really help.
I can't agree with your statements that people are running the WSU into the ground or that whatever you say on the forum is always twisted.
The majority of fans do not read the website and their opinion of WSU comes from what they see at the ground and the occasional flyer which is handed out. The truth of the matter is that you are not reaching your potential support well enough.
In my opinion your contributions to the forum in respect of the WSU are not twisted but questions about the WSU are raised, the central one being exactly what is your relationship with the Club which is stated as being independence and yet your events appear in the commercial page of the Official website. People who contribute to the forum just want to be clear as to what the relationship is and will make up their minds as to whether they wish to participate in events. As I have said before there is absolutely nothing inherently wrong with the WSU being part of the Club but the evasiveness of the WSU on this issue only serves to raise doubts about it. Who are WSU accountable to the Fans (I cant say its membership since it doesn't have one) or the Club?
Other comments about the WSU have in my opinion been criticism and criticism does not mean words are being twisted - 2 totally different concepts.
I would add that the efforts of the WSU have been recognised on this forum, and in all probability that includes from those contributors that you say are running the WSU into the ground and twisting your words.
As far as the 50/50 goes it has to compete with the Gold Bond Club, Sponsor a Goal and the matchday raffle. That is after you have taken account of the entrance fee, perhaps a programme, a burger, and a beer. It seems to me that 50/50 probably comes bottom of the list and as it is so similar to the matchday raffle perhaps WSU should drop it and put more behind the sponsor a Goal scheme which is very different from the other fund raising activities and as such will have its own market.
JgFc has hit the nail on the head with his suggestions. If you keep on running the same events, which many other organisations also run, interest wanes. To maintain peoples interest and hopefully improve participation you need to ring the changes with new events and he has given you a good start in terms of events which could be organised. A stale programme of events rightly or wrongly projects an image of an organisation bereft of drive and imagination and is the road to extinction. The odd quiz night and race night is OK but you have to offer more imaginative events which may or may not come off but portray an image of an organisation with drive and enthusiasm.

My suggestion would be to just run the Golden Goal competition but with a decent prize and not having to hunt down the organiser when you win it. It should also pay out more than the £20 it used to do.
I suggested some time back about being able to pick up prizes in the club shop at the end of the game. The suggestion was taken up but didn't last long. I believe it's reverted back to picking it up at the bar again.
While i disagree with some of Andrews and marks points, i welcome their posts and point of view and the sensible and adult like manner they used.
Exactly what a forum is for, sensible debate.
Mark , in an election people are put forward as candidates and then the public vote, This didnt happen in the WSU. Its very hard when an association is controlled by a few to sway them or change it.
Andrew. Again, Democracy would have started at the beginning. In the Case of the WSU, a few who tried to take down the WUISA and websites elected themselves to control a new body which hasnt been supported by the masses.
I do see the WSU as controlled by the club, the masses dont vote on where the money goes. NOTHING is posted on the website re where money is going etc etc. Draws are not published.
There is no drive and creativity (I admit there are a few fans who bust their nuts off in the WSU) But the organisation is based on shoddy foundations. Paul and Steve holly walked out, Money has been lost on poorly attended events. Thousands given to the club for a player who never signed... so where did the money go.
In short WSU has failed a lot of times, isnt accountable and is dead in the water. I have NOTHING against people like Russ, Rowan, Steve, Kappa, Matt etc being involved in a supporters association, Read that again... NOTHING against them. But i have great problems in the way it was created, who it is answerable to and the lack of success of it.
I hope that one day it really can be Wings Supporters united as such but on the WPC/WSUs previous records it wont be as it is at the moment.
I believe a similar meeting to the 2 held in the Guy is needed and a democratic body attended by all supporters who want to go and a new body non accountable to the club is formed. BUT we all know that Graham wanted WUISA sabotaged as they were "parasites" who never just gave the money to the club.
ANYONE who believes the WSU dont just give the money to the Club ala the few grand this season for a player who never came!! should take a look at the Hobbins relationship with those fans at the hub of the WSU.
I have tried to be constructive and truthful so lets hope the debate can continue along these lines. I would again like to thank Andrew, Mark and Spud for their points and how they put them across
This is a very good debate and one i hoped could take place long ago. If the issues can be addressed and discussed politely and sensible there is light at the end of the tunnel.
