Latest news from the Bexley Times and Ade's view on last weeks performance

WELLING United boss Adrian Pennock was dealt a double blow this week with the club's FA Cup elimination coinciding with an injury crisis.

The Wings were sent crashing out at the fourth qualifying round stage by Southern League minnows Clevedon Town last Saturday.

And in the wake of that humbling 3-0 defeat, four first-team players are now struggling to be fit for this Saturday's trip to Havant and Waterlooville with a further two out through suspension.

Martin Carthy, Danny Kedwell (chest infections), Ronayne Benjamin and John Guest (hamstring injuries) are the ailing quartet, while midfield duo Des Boateng and Jamie Day will sit out the encounter after amassing five bookings apiece.

Pennock explained: "We've got an illness going around the club at the minute. Both Martin Carthy and Danny Kedwell are feeling light headed and very weak and their complaints are similar to those that Mark Goodfellow and Andrew Sam have had in recent weeks.

"Add to that the two hamstring injuries and the suspensions and we're definitely up against it.

"But to be fair, we always seem to respond and play well when the chips are down and we'll look to do exactly that this Saturday at Havant and Waterlooville."

Pennock was at a loss to explain how his Welling side followed arguably their best performance of the season, a 5-0 victory over Bedford, with their worst display against Clevedon.

"I just cannot understand how the same team and players that I put out against Bedford can put on a performance like that," Pennock said.

"It's a big disappointment for everyone involved with the football club, especially when you consider what was at stake."

For all the disappointments, the Clevedon fiasco does leave Pennock and his players able to focus on a successful Conference South campaign and this Saturday's trip to Havant.

The game sees the 10th-placed hosts entertain a team five places above them, but Pennock insists Saturday's opponents are still capable of making a play-off challenge.

He said: "Havant will be up there at the end of the season. They have invested heavily and created a good and large squad."

It promises to be a busy few days for the Wings who return to PVR to host Dartford in Kent Senior Cup action next Tuesday night
