Cheats Never prosper....

Boston United have confirmed their relegation to the Blue Square North (formerly Conference North). The decision was made at the Conference AGM Yesterday.

It is understood the reason for the relegation to the Conference North was due to the fact footballing debts were included in the CVA which is not allowed.

Swindon Town drew 1-1 with Boston at home whilst beating The Pilgrims 3-1 away last season.

Altrincham who were relegated from the Conference last season will now stay up.

You have to feel sorry for Boston United fans who have been caught in the middle of this mess, however it seemed unlikely that Boston would have been able to complete their fixtures in the Conference due to crippling debts.

Boston had already been evicted from their ground and players have not been paid since February.

Boston who were promoted to the Football League in 2002 had been the centre of controversy before when rumours came up that players had been paid under the table in the season they were promoted.

The club ended up gaining massive debts after signing stars such as Paul Gascoigne and Julian Joachim who they could not afford.

The following statement has been released by Boston United.

Statement From Boston United FC

Boston United have been demoted to the Blue Square North division, formerly known as Conference North.

The decision was taken at the 'Conference' AGM in Bournemouth on Friday and Saturday and further details will be featured here on bufc.co.uk when available.

Whilst its great to see name players ending their careers in the non league arena to pay them silly amounts of money, particularly when as in the case of Gascoigne they have well documented problems has to be foolhardy in the extreme. There has to be a bit of realism and having earned a nice few quid as a pro does not mean that they should be paid more than the going rate for the level at which they are now playing. After all if they still had the ability to perform at a higher level and be paid more that is precisely what they would be doing. In my opinion what they are doing in reality is taking the p**s rather than giving something back to the game which has provided them with a comfortable living for a number of years. You can argue that they could earn more doing something else well my opinion is let them do just that and dont put into jeopardy the existence of non league clubs.

The only logical argument that there can be for signing such players is that they raise the profile of the Club and bring in the crowds. If this were the case their wages would be met from sponsorship and gate money but the reality is that curiosity value may well add to your gate for a few matches but it wont last unless they perform really well and sponsors outside those who are already on board, primarily because of their love of the game at non league level, are attracted by success not players past their sell by date for whatever reason.

The real downside of situations like this is and Clubs like Fisher throwing money willy nilly at a side believing that money alone will buy them success is that it discourages other Clubs from investing just a little bit more when they have success knocking at their door.
