Hello all. It occurs to me that 'United' is a fairly rare name in the world of non league football. Other than Welling I can only think of Boston and Oxford. My question, as mentioned in the topic, is why did Welling use the United in their name - why not Town etc? My guess is that the United comes from a merger of two clubs, possibly Bexleyheath+Welling?
Glen i dont think it was anything to do with the previous clubs as Welling are entirely seperate. I believe Welling were asked to be called Welling United by Bexley Council as a condition of the lease? I may be wrong on that.
I am sure many of the older supporters will be able to add to the debate and know far more than i about it.

If you really want to know anything about the history of Welling United then phone Barry Hobbins at the club. He's a nice bloke and I'm sure he'd be happy to give you the info you want.
Thanks for the info/advice. I would imagine that the club is now approaching a milestone in terms of its existence (40 years?) - has anyone ever written a book about the club? If not it might be a winner. Given the meteoric rise up the pyramid it would appeal to many in the football world. I bet there are a few stories to tell over the years as well! It could raise much needed funds, raise the clubs profile, and raise much needed funds. Good idea?
I would imagine if you contacted Barrie at the club on 0208 3011196 he wil have a chat he must have loads of pictures and stats and anecdotes. I would love to see a section on the official website of old gallerys from the 70s 80s and 90s of match photographs. Keith must have taken millions and we have had others taking pics too.
