I have resisted commenting up until now on this seasons events and really hope I am proved wrong with what I am about to post however, this latest batch of signings compells me to express my opinion:
Having supported Welling since Spartan League days I have seen my fair share of horror story performances where you go home in despair. However on so many of those occasions you could console yourself with the thought that it was normally a team that had a fair amount of talent in it and at various other stages in the seson had put in decent perrformances and got a decet result.
On numerous occasions that despairing performane was followed bu a gutsy turnaround in the following match with credible draws or victories being achieved.
Last Saturday I sensed was different. Both full backs seemed shell shocked from the moment they walked onto the pitch, our midfield lacked (or didnt demonstrate) any siginiticant penetratvie ability. Aside from that we had a young and willing loanee and the capable and talented Coleman.
It was a racing certainty that we were going to lose at Eastbourne. Anyone now knows in our league that one goal against Welling guarantees at least a point so as they acheived this in 2 minutes I do not think we should take any solace from the small margin of defeat.
The manager is keen and committed, but his berating of the younger members of our lacking in confidence team from the touchline, does not inspire confidence that he knows how to turn this around. At the very least I suggest we have poor people handling skills here !
Going back to Coleman who I would say is performing excellentlly, has no one asked why it is that this guy never seems to clock in many appearances for a team when his goals per game ratio is excellent. Let's just hope that he does not have an underlying recurring injury which is the reason for this!
Then we move onto the signings. I know many of the posters on here rate Ellis Green. I personally feel he is lightweight and a luxury player and if that is the best the Neil Smith can come up with heavan help us.
Added to this we have another loanee who has been with orur relegation rivals plus two lads who cant get a game with their present teams. I have to ask has our manager seem them play? If not then it appears we are just signing people who other clubs are happy to offload rather than make sound judgements as to what we require.
The reason why I feel we are struggling at present is we lack the capability to sustain a period of pressure on teams, we don't get corners we dont get free kicks in dangerous positions and this is beacuase we do not have a midfield that can take the game to the opposition. Despite my reservations on Ellis Green I would say it is a move on the right direction, but re sigining Day would be the type of move we need or soomeone of that ilk.
I will cheer us on tomorrow in the vain hope of a victory, but the impression and style of these siginings confirms to me that the Neil Smith era is not going to be an enjoyable one as a Welling fan, with many more disappointments than successes.
I just hope that it does not cost us our Blue Square South status.
I agree he was a bit lightweight at times but last season we didn't get the ball out wide enough for him. Once he got the ball and attacked his pace was excellent and he delivered some very good crosses. Every year he will fill out a bit as well and this will help him to shrug off some of the challenges. I think his biggest problem was self belief/confidence - he sometimes was a bit hesitant in running at defenders. If he overcomes this he'll rip the big lumps apart in this league.
