Do you get to name your race as well ie could it be the Andrew Nicholson is 40 today claiming stakes? (I'm not by the way and neither is my birthday in May)? Or is it Race 5 sponsored by Andrew Nicholson?

And are there prizes for winning owners? Many years ago I remember winning a free MOT or something similar which as a non-driver came in very useful.

Hello Andrew,

In answer to your questions, please specify how you want the format of the title of your race sponsorship when making your booking. We'll then ensure it's done to your requirements when we're putting the programme together.

The last Race Night organised at least saw winning owners walk away with a bottle of fizz. I'm pretty certain that's the case this time and will confirm that on this thread shortly.

Cheers

Andrew,

I'm pleased to confirm that winning horse race owners will each receive a bottle of champagne on the night.

Cheers

I'm pleased to announce that all horses have been bought and all races sponsored for Saturday's Race Night after the Hampton home game this Saturday at 6pm in the Wings Bar. Thank you to everyone who has taken part (especially the players, management and coaching staff combined who have claimed just under half the entire night's card).

This is a marvellous effort everyone, thank you!

Our apologies to those of you who have missed out this time, but remember the Race Night is free and open to all, so why not stake what you were looking to spend on horse ownership and race sponsorship on bets instead and take try and take home a tidy sum.

See you Saturday!

Sherpa

It was very pleasing to have the support of Fordy, Jimmy and the team who not only attended but weighed in with hefty race and horse sponsorship. I'm sure that WSU were very grateful for the support and that of the Hampton & Richmond supporters who stayed for the event..

I have to say that the turnout from our supporters was very disappointing.

As with the Legends Night judging from the banter those that did attend had a good time.

My first attendance at a Race Night but no beginners luck - lost every race!

Got to agree with Bruno that if it wasn't for the Management, Team and usual suspects (and Hampton fans, who were more than welcome and entered into the spirit of the evening) it would have been a disaster attendance wise! Those that were there had a great time so..........where were the rest of you? Are the WSU, as they think,  banging their heads on a brick wall? Free entry to a WELLING fund raising do and the chance to meet Andy, Jimmy and ALL of the players socially spurned by so many!!!! When the WSU, who have contributed a fair bit to the playing budget this year, wake up to the apathy displayed by SO many and go back to being regular supporters i promise, you'll miss them!

I would have liked to have been at the race night but as I have said on previous occasions being nightwork makes these things difficult. For the same reason I am unable to get to away games unless off both Friday and Saturday nights. So far this season its meant only getting to Thurrock, which is one more game than last season. I am intending to take (very) early retirement in May and hope I can get to more evening functions.

PS I am actually  scheduled off tonight which means I can get to the KSC game but I am at work Friday and Saturday nights so cant get to wombledon. Such is life!

You are probably better off arranging comedians / racconteurs wheres people can have a chat network and mingle. You can have a WSU desk on the night. You would get more people turn up.

Race nights to me have always been a joke whoever runs them and are so 1970s .

For instance lets say you had.... An Evening with Andy Townsend in the club house how many can you get in there? 120 people? £20 a ticket, bit of proper food . Andy would probably do it for a "decent drink" as hes in london doing talksport. You would probably get a fair few people turn up and you could hit them with flyers about over events, or SAG etc etc.

If people arent turning up you need to provide events that they will turn up to, Or get an organisation in that will be supported.

How about having a race night at the Dogs (Crayford) sponsor a couple of open races sell packages in the restaurant, again have a WSU stand there run raffles etc etc. Spread awareness. Get posters up in Supermarkets how many THOUSANDS of people a day visit a supermarket? Get a deal with a local one give them an advertising hoarding or page in the programme in exchange for a poster in their store and maybe announcement on their tannoy. Run a youth day sponsored by the supermarket that will be advertised there?

Hi JG.

The last comedian/raconteur we employed was for the End of Season do 2 years ago, it cost the WSU the best part of several hundred quid and, frankly, on the night Ben Lewis was funnier.

I hear conflicting stories as to whether Towner would do a night at Welling. For every, "he mentions Welling often on Talksport" I hear a "I wouldn't bother". In view of more recent Legends Nights, however, the more famous will have to be considered and perhaps a dossier on those in the Premier League as it were will have to be put together to see if they will indeed do it for a decent drink.

The feeling among meeting attendees (I'll stop short of calling it a committee) is that we are having to spread the Club name and news of events wider, and to this end, I'm enormously grateful to the supporter who has volunteered to begin handing out flyers to businesses on the High Street.

A Race Night at Crayford Dogs is also being discussed.

Sherpa if you need any feedback on crayford let me know. I got 2 running there and 3more trialling on this week I would personally sponsor a couple of races on a FRIDAY or SATURDAY night (theyve just stopped mondays) . That way you have the chance of attracting the regular racegoers to the club and WSU . With regards to the proper legends. Paul Barron was up for it if it could be arranged when his team were in town. But it wouldnt hurt contacting those that went on to make it on the big stage. As i said before how about a Darts evening you could get 2 top players for what you paid Tommy Smith to go head to head with the big stage and walk on music etc etc. You can get one player to play the locals all night for half that. Just something different to attract others in. An advert in the new shopper or SVBT a post on one or two darts forums and you have a sell out.  Wayne Mardle V James Wade ? Mervyn King V Peter Manley ? I do agree with what was posted by Gary? about opening up the social club, when i was old enough we used to go in Sunday lunch , saturday night etc etc . Maybe get a pool team or darts team in the week and open weekends and gradually build things? Perhaps you need to build the community and watch it grow rather than say SUPPORT US SUPPORT THE CLUB.
