Can some-on explain to me why we could expect  a transfer fee for Charlie if he should go to another club. We had him on a one year contract and that contract is finished. We have offered him another but I thought that all players were free agents once their contracts expired. I would appear to be wrong but perhaps some-one could explain how it all works.

It's about compensation due to his age rather than a transfer fee. If a players contract is over, then he is allowed to leave his current club, no questions asked. But as Charlie is under 24 then the club he is moving to must pay the club he was out of contract to, a compensation fee.

This was all bought about after the Bosman ruling to save clubs losing young players without any fees at all. (i think!)

The compensation normally factors  in the costs of training and development, the player's age and playing record, the length of time he was registered with his former club, the terms offered by both clubs, the status of the two clubs, and the interest shown by other clubs in acquiring the registration of the player.

And this only happens if we offer him a new contract (which I think we have)

I would have thought that Fordy has this covered. Why does Sheringham want to sign for Bishop's Stortford anyway? They are a smaller team than us and I didn't think they were big payers. Very strange. I'm sure he will enjoy playing in front of 300 every week.

Thanks - i thought it may well be due to something to do with age. Now I understand. It also means, in the present financial climate, that a lot of people will be put off going for him.
