If they have applied, my shortlist would be: Hayden Bird, Dereck Brown, Wayne Burnett, Jimmy Dack, Craig Edwards, Gary Roberts and ? Vines (ex Crawley and Basingstoke) with Gary Abbot as a possible outside choice.
In my opinion, Dereck would be a good choice - a lovely man, knows the club, has the club at heart, has wide playing experience and has been assistant manager (I think) at Hayes or Yeading or both and is currently assistant manager at Maidenhead.
Letting my head rule my heart, I would go for Gary Roberts if, indeed, he has applied. He seems to get the best out of his Cambridge City teams - lately on limited means.
Wayne Burnett has spotted and produced some fine players.
It must be good news for the standing of the Club that some 43-45 candidates have applied for the job without it being advertised - although you could not buy the coverage given by BBC radio London, the Non-League Paper and the local press.
But I would not like to be Barrie and co. trying to whittle down the applicants into a manageable shortlist! Incidentally, I see Johnson Hippolyte at Maidenhead has signed a two-year contract extension - I wonder whether we were after him?

So much in life is not WHAT you know but WHO you know.
Someone with current experience in and around Conf South level is an absolute must ... no compromise on this please. Reasons being that although someone like Fordy could be a great coach, man-manager etc, you need contacts to get the players and coaches on board in the first place. A good list of mobile numbers and being "liked" by players who therefore want to come to your club and play for you is almost more important than the abilities of the manager on the coaching pitch. Someone will go to Man Utd because it is Man Utd, no-one is going to go to Welling because its Welling, they will go to Welling because they are either offered a good deal financially (unlikely compared to other clubs) or because it is local to where they live or because they know they will get a game, or know the manager.
For this reason I would opt for Dereck Brown too. Nice guy who will tell it straight. Hobbins know him and his qualities, he knows them and their pro's and con's. Brown could never moan about the role not being what he thought it was like Fordy has suggested, he knows what the Hobbins are like. Brown has first-hand experience of the job, and also, just as important, knows the league already, so will know about the upcoming opposition rather than having to start from scratch. He knows the players locally as Maidenhead isnt that far away, and has contacts at slightly higher Conf Prem level for loan signings. For all his faults someone like Hales was amazing at getting the loan players in from Orient and the like ...
Brown in !!
As a little after-thought, maybe Cambridge City have let Clarke back because the Cambridge City manager is coming to Welling and wants him here with him .... nah, thought not. Bad signing, too much money, wouldnt surprise me if was our top earner on 400-500 a week... Cambridge themselves have said they cant afford to keep him !!
Roberts would be my choice of those mentioned. Ex Welling player, done well at City , seemed to get decent signings in. he got Sheringham first.
Derek Brown? sorry, again no room for sentimenallity, what has he achieved? , He was a fair player in his short spell at Welling and is a nice guy.
We want those that have had some success at our level.
If you read Barrie's views, he said half the applicants arent up to it and of the other 20, 7 or 8 are very strong candidates with experience at our level and above and those are the ones they are concentrating on.
IF we get someone in with no experience or success at our level we have not appointed the strongest applicants and that will be a huge mistake and let down given the apparant strength of 20% of the applicants according to Barrie.

He once got me into Stamford Bridge for free because I met him on the train on the way to a game - can you imagine a top flight footbaler getting the stopping service from Bickley to Victoria. This was before a Chelsea v Man U game and he played.
Can't see him applying - failed at Crawley and sacked from Weymouth

I BELIEVE HE GOT THE GOONER FROM WEYMOUTH, BECAUSE OF THE INTREST HE SHOWED IN THE VACANCY AT I THINK WOKING.
I'm glad Barrie is concentrating on the 7 or 8 with experience at our level of above.
I suppose it still depends on the interview though. Maybe some of those 7 or 8 will not come across with the right plans, knowledge of Welling etc.. and it's possible some won't accept it even if they got the job.
