Have to confess that my current sporting hero is not a footballer but the phenomenum that is Moto GP star Valentino Rossi.

At the age of 26 Rossi has won the world campionship at 125cc, 250cc, 500cc classes and he has won the Moto GP championship every year since its inception in 2002, and looks like retaining the title this year.

He had always had the best performing bikes in the class until 2004 when he switched to the struggling Yamaha factory who had played second fiddle to Honda since 1992.  He went on to retain his title on what all the experts agreed was an inferior bike to the Honda thus proving that it is the rider who makes all the difference and not the machine.

The Yamaha has benefitted from his technical ability which enables him to identify the precise cause of problems and areas of potential development and communicate them to the mechanics.  Despite experts saying that the Yamaha still remains inferior to the Honda this year he has carried on where he left off last season and has so far won all but one race(where he finished second) this season.

Well that's my sporting hero and why - who is yours?

Eric Bristow in his pomp. My dad was a decent player, top flight (pardon the pun) in his day and so i met all the players and mixed with them on first name terms on the circuit. Bristow was different class, the skill, arrogance and sheer guts of the man in battle were awesome. I played most of the top pro's in Competitions and practice and the one that i was in awe of was Bristow. The best game against him for me was at the Greenwich Town hall and the one i got royally slaughtered. The 12 best players (alledgedly) from the south east played him on stage infront of hundreds of people, this was in 1985 when the Crafty Cockney was "the daddy". I'd had the full back page of the Mercury the week before on my big match coming up and had been largeing it (who me?). I was touted as the best youth (being 14) at the time (although i played in the same team as Wayne Mardle for years). I got there he said, wheres the old man, i said at work, he said hes gonna miss me slaughtering you then, shame!!.

Well i started ok hitting a few 100s not as good as when in the green room with Eric when i was hitting 180s left right and center. Bristow was amazing best of 5 on stage he won in 11, 14 and 10 darts over 501, 3-0. The best leg being 180, 140, 153, D14 Ten Darts against a kid!

Matches V Jocky Wilson at the Embassy stand out for me and the one that got away from him when electing not to throw for a bullseye and leaving Dellar a 138 finish that won the world title. The Man is a Legend. At his Pomp i'd have my dosh on him to beat Taylor. For guts, arrogance, self belief and walking the walk, great player and great showman and without him Darts would be just a way of spending some time in the pub.

The Crafty Cockney, Eric Bristow

Will always remember him and for me no one and i mean no one can hold a candle to him. PS anyone want a game of darts for a tenner in the clubhouse?
