Three of Welling Uniteds five strikers got off the mark as the Wings kicked off their pre-season campaign with a comfortable win over Kent League side Herne Bay.
In scorching conditions, both managers decided to make 10 changes at the break, with both goalkeepers playing 90 minutes.
Herne Bay put in a spirited display for the opening half-an-hour, before the Blue Square Bet South visitors scored two goals in four minutes.
Goalkeeper Charlie Mitten launched the ball up field for striker James Lawson to crack a stunning right-footed volley, which screamed past Dan Eason.
Eason was deceived four minutes later when Jamie Coyle played a quickly taken free-kick to Jack Obersteller and he had time and space to drive a shot, which took a deflection towards goal and Luis Cumbers smashed the ball into the net from close in.
Herne Bay pulled a goal back with the last kick of the first half when Dan Lawrence whipped in a cross for striker Ben Brown to smash a low shot across Mitten into the bottom far corner.
With new players on the pitch at the interval, Herne Bay almost snatched an equaliser when substitute striker Stuart King wriggled his way through the Welling defence but stabbed his shot against the near post from six-yards.
But Welling dominated the second half and wrapped up the victory when left-back Kane Rice played the ball through the defence for Tommy Whitnell to slot the ball home.
They should have scored a fourth when a hanging cross from the right from Loui Fazakerley was met at the far post by Junior Alabi, but his headed effort crashed against the crossbar.
Kane joined the club (VCD) midway through the 2007/08 season and quickly became a fans favourite with his skilful and pacy displays either as an attacking full back or a wide midfielder. Kane represented Eire at U14 to U17 level and has attracted the attention of many league clubs as a young player. Came to the Vickers from Maidstone United to get valuable first team experience and is an integral part of the squad now. Scored the goal of the 07/08 season away to Croydon and topped it last year with the winning goal from 25 yards in the Kent Senior Trophy final against Erith & Belvedere,
Im liking the last part.!!
