Hi Bruno.

I notice you have my Auction Night as a WSU event, I would just like to clarify that my Auction Night was moved from 12th November to help raise the much needed funds for the HMRC debt as opposed to the original idea of just a normal WSU fund raiser for the clubs development.

Patsy

Can someone please explain to me this WSU, Wings United, and all the other alas's that there are ... why are there what appears to be so many different "groups" raising money for the same cause ??

Does it not make sense to setup one body that will be a nice blend of everyones skill and experience to raise as much money as possible, rather than lots of groups all doing their own thing ??

This is not intended as a dig at anyone by the way, just an honest question from someone who wants to help and solve this problem, but is unsure who exactly is doing what and where and why.

Kevin, From the perspective of someone who has attended and run events for WSU this is how I see the current situation.

WSU was established in 2004 and is a small group of supporters who have an annual programme of events which raise funds which for the development of Welling United. As such they organise events substantially using the Wings Bar where the Club get the bar takings and any other profit goes into the WSU bank account and are used for projects for the benefit of supporters and the Club. Effectively the risk factor involved in running events lies with WSU whilst there is guaranteed money raised which goes directly to the Club.

In addition to events WSU run Club Shop, the 49 Club, the Sponsor a Goal scheme and scratchcards all of which are evident on match days and the Christmas Draw.

From the element of monies raised from events which WSU retained in the past 3 years they have:
provided the wages for a player for a season,
provided stock for the shop prior to taking its running at the back end of last season,
subsidised the end of season presentation evening,
made the necessary repairs to and redecorated the Club Shop in the closed season,
stocked the Club Shop
and
paid the licence fee for the walkie talkies being used by the stewards.

There have been frequent attempts to recruit more people to take part in WSU but regretably for whatever reason the number involved remains very small. All have always been welcome to attend WSU meetings and help with the organisation and running of events.  As of last month headlines from its meetings are posted on both the WSU website and the official website.

When the HMRC action became public a meeting of supporters was held with a view to finding ways to raise the necessary pound notes. The meeting was chaired by Russ and Matt and it was agreed that an appeal fund would be set up with monies initially being paid into the WSU bank account whilst their own bank account was set up. I think around £13k has been raised for the appeal fund through an extension of the Sponsor a Player Scheme which had previously been run by WSU and the Club Aid event run by Sy and Patsy. As can be seen from Pat's post the auction night which was originally in WSU's programme of events has now been declared an Appeal event and all monies raised will now presumably go to the appeal fund.

Does it matter if an event is held in the name of WSU or the Appeal Fund, or for that matter anyone, surely we are all here to raise money for the same cause ?? I would suggest all events are held in the name of Welling United.

Where did the word factions come from Kev?  Two different entities organising the raising of funds for Welling United doesn't of itself equate to factions.  Appeal Funds are just that funds set up to raise money for a specific purpose.

I feel that it is worth pointing out that the events organised to raise funds specifically for the Appeal Fund are being organised by the same people as those who run a significant number of WSU events.  They obviously don't see it being factions and certainly in my case I see it as two groups both raising funds one is short term and the other long term.

WSU has existed for 6 years and a significant distinguishing factor is that it has to have a contingency for the operating costs of running the Club Shop and to take account of the risk element involved in its activities.  These risks include the scratch card payouts which actually bankrupted WSU at the end of the season before last when the £1K winner came out and they were committed to paying a players wages for the year.  There is still potential for at least 2 big payouts as well as some significant other prizes needing to be paid.

The Appeal Fund has been set up specifically to raise funds to help with the HMRC debt (as was the floodlight appeal.)  Its events have been organised with the bands and DJ taking no fee and are therefore no risk activities and consequently no need for a contingency.

There is nothing to say that as with Pat's Auction Night proceeds of other WSU events won't go to the appeal fund, but first they have to make a profit above and beyond bar sales and secondly the contingency has to be maintained.

The setting up of a formal supporters group whose activities would include fundraising as an alternative to WSU has been suggested many times before.  As with many other things I'm afraid that with a few exceptions our supporters are much better at suggesting things for somebody else to do rather than roll their sleeves up and getting on with it themselves.

It seems that we are all quick to criticise the Club for its shortcomings but generically we are no better.   We will give money when the club is in trouble but beyond that there is very little.

Bruno, please note that my post was not meant to belittle any of the great efforts made by yourself and others, during these tough times, and long before hand for many as well.

All I am querying is the setup of these groups as a pooly informed "outsider" when it comes to this. I have heard many a rumour over the years about the various names of these groups, and scabbles between them, and all sorts. Most is nonsense I am sure.

As a loyal supporter, with little money to put in the pot, but time and energy and knowledge instead, I just thought I would ask the question. I am as concerned as the next person about our plight, and like all would like it sorted asap.
