I cant sit here and watch one of my Kent football clubs go down the pan without doing something, so late last night I emailed the following letter to Andy Townsends agency. As of yet (11am) I havent received a reply, but fingers crossed. If you dont ask, you dont get....
I hope you can help me. I run a football website - as a hobby - that covers non-league football in Kent and I am very concerned about one of the clubs that I cover, Welling United Football Club, and would like to make a respectful plea to one of your clients, Mr Andy Townsend, who began his glittering football career with the club back in 1980.I am sure the clubs supporters, who supported Mr Townsend during the four years that he played for the club as a part-timer, whilst working as a computer operator for Greenwich Borough Council, living locally in Bexleyheath, would be internally grateful if your client could support his former club in their hour of need. The club issued a statement, which was published on the clubs official website
www.wellingunited.com, earlier in the week, and I would be extremely grateful if you can forward this email to Mr Townsend to see if the clubs predicament will pull at his heart strings and if he could assist with possibly bailing out the club.Football clubs serve their local community and their supporters care passionately about their clubs and their towns and Welling United give local youngsters a chance to impress and fulfil their dreams of becoming a professional footballer.
The club face a race against time - 15 December 2010 to be precise - to fulfil their commitments to the tax-man and you can imagine how difficult it is generating cash through sponsorships during the current economic climate.
I am contacting Mr Townsend because I too care passionately about the game of football and I would like to report on talented youngsters that wear the red shirt of Welling United - the same red shirt your client wore back in the early 1980s before he embarked on a very successful playing - and media - career.
Please do ... lets not just ask for a handout, lets offer something worthwhile that they will buy into ... how about a celeb game annually if we surviive ??
Great idea Kev also one of the top Presenters is a Kent Boy, Ian Collins and Obviously Townsend used to play for us and Collymore played against us.
See if they will sponsor us, theyve bought a few greyhounds that race at wimbledon so they may do. We may even get reporters at games and more exposure.

They do a "track a non-league club" thing through the early stages of the FA Cup. Barrie said shirt sponsorship is normally about 7k a year, seeing as we are halfway through now, surely they would sponsor us for 2k ?? and although not huge money, the additional coverage would be amazing.
Shirt sponsorship is 15k Kev, so now you are looking at 5 to 7k for the rest of the season. Maybe someone at talksport will give townsend a nudge and see if he can either bail us out for old times sake, as i would imagine his lifestyle is better now than when working for the council!! or sort maybe he can head a consortium.

I don't want to blow my own trumpet, but indirectly (via a couple of text messages to Mike Green) I managed to get the club's situation aired on BBC Radio Kent this afternoon.
I see that Andy Townsend is a consultant for Harlequin Property who are the current shirt sponsors of Port Vale.
If he does get in touch perhaps he could be requested to ask them whether they would do some form of sponsorship of Welling either for the rest of this season or for next.
