Being the simple soul that I am I'm having difficulty in understanding the latest attempt by the FA to collect the small change falling out of Mr Abramovich's pocket. They have brought a charge of misconduct against Chelsea for carrying out drug tests on their own players saying that "Interference with a drugs test or the doping control programme will be regarded as amounting to a breach of the doping control regulations." How does a club subjecting players to properly carried out drug testing interfere with 'a drugs test or a doping control programme'? It simply means that players may be required to submit to testing over and above that under the FA programme making it more likely that any substance abuse will be discovered.
Chelsea have made it very clear that they have adopted a zero tolerance policy to anybody who fails a drug test and rejects the chance of help and rehabilitation when offered by the club. They have gone public with their stand on substance abuse as can be seen by the dismissals of Bosnich and Mutu.
Are the FA really saying that as the players employers the club are not entitled to ensure that they, and the game itself, are not brought into disrepute by the actions of their high profile and highly paid employees?
Can anyone enlighten me?
