I like this description of our defence on the Ebbsfleet forum

In the end I guess a 1-1 was a settle for scoreline, but it cannot detract from the fact that we played straight into Welling's hands by lumping the ball forward continuously to Willock and Erskine who were being marked by Canary Wharf and the Empire State building.

Was very unlucky last night.  Really good atmosphere and nice to here Wings fans singing.  Pires was the best I've seen him gave a bit more effort than usual.  Shame Pugh injured.  COYW. smile

Are you Daish in disguise?

He was far too busy trying to be touchy feely with the players to be effective, until the last few minutes when Ebbsfleet's 11 finally got his dues.

I see where you're coming from Russ, but at the time I wrote that, the ref hadn't really done much wrong.  During the first half, the only thing he could have done differently was to perhaps have booked the 11 for simulation.  Throughout the match he didn't fall for their theatrics and, on several occasions, told their players to get up after they'd gone over too easily.

There were a couple of free-kicks he should have given our way during the second half (mainly headers won by our players when the Ebbsfleet players made no attempt to get the ball and backed in), but I thought he was fine compared to most of the refs I've seen this season.  I think it also depends where you watch the match from, as those in the stand around me thought he was a decent ref, but it was clear that those behind the goal weren't happy with him.

As JGFC says, there was also a late tackle on Clarke that probably warranted a yellow, but then Clarke could have picked up a yellow card of his own for a late challenge and constant backchat to the ref.  He could also have booked an Ebbsfleet player for kicking the ball away, but Day also did this during the match and could have been booked as well.  I think he was the same for both sides.

From what I've seen during the last few seasons, I go to each match pretty much expecting the refs to be truly awful; this one wasn't.

Moo he booked day for walking away with the ball in his hand very slowly, which caused less of a delay than the times ebbsfleet kicked it miles away when we had a free kick or throw in. I think that shows that he wasnt the same for both teams, especially when Marwa deliberate handballed it to stop us breaking and he waved play on and never booked him.

I thought he showed little integrity second half as far too much was given to ebbsfleet whenever he could, including a few that should have gone our way, he was also far more leniant with ebbsfleet players.

But how would you compare him to the other refs we've had this season?  At least he didn't get conned by Ebbsfleet's vociferous penalty shouts; a lot of refs we've had this season would have given it.

That's true especially when their number 10 kept standing in front of our players when they wanted to take a throw in, and the times when he stood right in front of our goalie trying to stop him taking a goal kick. He should have got a booking for deliberately acting like a knob and disrupting the flow of the game.

Moo , imho First half he was a decent ref but should have booked Marwa and their 11. Second half he gave everything their way and some very dodgy decisions to them. I thought he clearly favoured Ebbsfleet after the break. How did he compare with others? Second half he was poor so he compared equally to them. Havent seen many good refs. Andy Parker did ok the other week.

I can handle bad refs but when they give it all one way i tend to be of the opinion its not ineptitude and that its integrity issues or theyve been bullied by the oppo players and manager into it.

Also he was a disgrace when we played at Hampton in the same way giving them everything and penalising us and not protecting our players. That was a refereeing performance i will remember for ever at Hampton. I think he hates us.

But he did give us the penalty that won us the match....

Anyway, what am I saying?  I can't believe I'm wasting my time defending a ref's decisions!  He wasn't perfect, but he didn't raise the hackles like most other refs I've seen lately.

Moo Hampton 2 years ago when we lost 2-0 in midweek, not this season. It was a disgraceful show of refereeing that night.

The one the year before who gave Hampton two penalties and sent two Welling players off was even worse. His name was Phipps I believe.

Personally, I thought the ref was OK last night. Got most calls spot on and his assistants looked OK too, from where I was- can't really complain. I see the highlights earlier, and when Tom Phipp(11) went down 'like he'd been shot', it looked like there was slight contact, as the elbow did make movement towards the face, nothing malicious though. The penalty call, I thought the ref got spot on- the player did catch West(I think it was) as he was about to shoot, but he got the ball I thought. The goal kick he gave, I was dead certain that was a corner though! Ah well, a point was fair and I'm happy with it. Good turnout from us, and a decent atmosphere in general. Good luck for the rest of the season.

Good call Dogme, he should have been booked for ( the old fashioned term ) ungentlemanly conduct. Maybe nowadays called dissent?

There is no doubt they have talent, so why do they fall to the ground so easily?

No. 11 went over better than a Tom Daley dive - tart. He even had their Physio check his mouth over to see if all was OK. Yes mate, all there so just get on with it, afterall, you were the one that started the shirt pulling / tugging Clarkie.

Ref was decent first half, second half one sided. We need to be a vocal as every other team, then we might get things going our way.
