This was going to wait until the 12th April to mark 25 years but I've published it now as the whole season was unforgettable. It's a collection of stills from the amazing title winning season........
Same here BKK. Good memories and reminds me (as if I need reminding) why I love the Wings. 85/86 was my first full season as a Wings fans - a great season to start.
Great video and thanks. As a newcomer ( 3 years ) I wasn't fortunate enough to see the likes of Abbo etc, but the stories that I have heard still makes me proud to be a Wings supporter.
That has to biggest the biggest trophy ever in any sport! I went home with Kevin Shoemake's glove that day which sat on my shelf until I moved it one day and it fell apart - still with the mud attached!
I was reminded that in the 33 years I have supported the Wings we have had some terrific strikers. Robbins, Abbott, Kedwell and Pugh would probably all rate in the top half dozen. But the best of them all was John Bartley. Anytime he had even a half chance anywhere around the area a goal was virtually guaranteed. I am sure that if a Football League club had come in for him earlier in his career, he would have been a great success at a much higher level.
It is impossible to accurately compare teams from different eras but my guess is that if it were possible for the 1985/6 side at their peak to play the current team it would be a very close affair. That in itself is a massive tribute to Jamie Day's outfit.
I think the team we have now, like a lot of non league clubs, have a much higher skill level than previous seasons. No doubt due to fitness, diet, football academies, better coaching knowledge etc etc.
I would say that the 85/86 team would give many a run for their money in this league. Bartley and Abbott would still bang them in.
Well done Gary, that was fantastic. That brought back so many pleasant memories that we have all treasured over the years that have now past.
This had special memories for myself and my family, as our company "Bettabuys of Sidcup" were the main sponsors during that time, and almost every customer coming into our shop always asked how our team were doing at Welling United. I felt really proud each time I placed a new poster on our shop window advertising our future games.
These were really enjoyable times, and only a few years after, we were playing Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup at Park View Road in front of the BBC cameras.
Our team today is very skillful and shows similar attitudes to our team in the eighties. With the performances that they have given us this season, together with the close bond of our supporters it seems that at last everything is falling into place for our club to move on towards being a big success in the future ahead.
It is so important NOW that a good commercial manager (with experience), together with more local sponsors joining in on our success this season, would be a massive lift for our club to reach the higher level it deserves.
Fantastic!!! This was my first season supporting Welling United. My first match was Welling Utd 3 Alvechurch 1, and finished off a great season when I went to the Preistfield Stadium with the Kent Cup win against Dover.
BRILLIANT! Just 4/5 years before my first attendance at PVR so there are some great pictures of those players who carried on through (who were fairly senior in 89/90) so these snaps fill a few gaps for me. Really enjoyed that and agree, If I was someone like Nigel Ransom - I would love to have a copy of that!!!
