A very good point....at least 20 mins to have any influence - unless there was an injury we dont know about

I don't care what team the thread starter supports, even if it is the special needs side at Ponces Park. Still a fact that subs are brought on far too late in the game.

Totally agree, Dolby with 5 minutes to go leaves him no chance to make an impact. We have some decent talent on the bench to use, if the game isn't going all our way, give them a chance to make a change. Fresh legs always help for me, how many times do we see in other games the difference a sub can make.

I've lost count the number of times this season a sub has come on with so little time left, that they only really start to make a difference during injury time when the match is practically over. I'd like to see someone like Healy or Pires come off the bench with 20 minutes to go and put the fear of god into the oppo :D

I'd like to say well done to the Dartford supporting thread starter, you've managed to spark a...............................friendly conversation amongst fellow Welling fans :)

If people.... and i dont include dobla in this as he never played..... but if they play below par against kingstonian for 90 minutes infront of the gaffer, when its a great chance to say oi i want a starting place..... hes not going to sling them on with 30 mins to go away at Dartford.

They are young but they need to grab their next chance and make it impossible for Jamie not to include them or not to give them 20 minutes.

As he said in his interview, if you get a chance you have to grab it. That goes for everyone whether its to win a ball into our box, tuck away a goal or you get a chance on the pitch to grab the shirt.

And when they get a chance they want to at least look like they want to be there, not stand around looking like they couldn't give a toss. Welling players don't have to run for 90 minutes but they need to be interested in the game, put in good tackles, make an effort, always give the bloke with the ball someone to pass to etc. I'm trying to forget about the Kingstonian game.

How many people thought that Dolby should have come on earlier. I certainly didn't. The 11 we had were totally outplaying Dartford. The only player I might have brought on for 15- 20 minutes would have been Faz if he was fit.

Perhaps yesterday wasnt the best example as we were lacking options on the bench to make changes anyway, but the principle is correct, subs at 85mins is pointless. There have been games this season where we have been winning and hanging on, and the opposition have made three changes in personal, and formation, and start to force us to sit back. Fresh legs, even if a player of lesser ability, is just common sense. In a way we are victims of our own good starting XI though ... who would you take off .... Pugh ?? dont think so.

I agree, however yesterday was a bad example. It looked like a goal was going to come so I don't any changes needed to be made. There have indeed been games as Kevin mentioned where we seem to be hanging on to a lead or making little impact whilst losing when we should have made earlier changes.

A great manager once said that it only takes a second to score a goal.

And if we try to analyse the last five minutes for example we will see that it is plenty of time to turn the game around.

1. Obviously fresh legs mean that the new player will be able to run at least 70mph meaning that if the ball is played quick enough to him then a more positive outcome will be obtained.

2. The rest of the team would have got used to the playing surface which should result in a perfect pass from his team mates to him.

3. There are 300 seconds in five minutes meaning that there is a fantastic chance for a substitute to score a hat full of goals.

So in summing up, five minutes is more than enough time for a substitute not only to equalise but to score at least five goals.
