Have just returned from mini-break from Bath. I have to say it's an incredibly beautiful city and strongly recommend people staying up there for a night or two when we play them next week.
The views of the surrounding landscape around the hotel were incredible with the wintry scenery adding to it's beauty. Plus being off-season the hotel's giving some fairly good nightly rates.
I'd also strongly recommend visiting the Roman Baths.
As for boozers unfortunately alot of the smaller independant pubs scattered around the place, although looking quite traditional, quaint and tempting to visit, when you go inside they actually seem to resemble a scene out of Straw Dogs.... I kid you not, I walked into several small pubs earlier, three of which I was told immediately and abruptly by the landlord/barman "we're closing!" despite it being only just gone 5PM and there being several crusty old locals sat around the bar moving only occasionally to wipe the cobwebs off their foreheads. The fourth literally fell into silence as my girlfriend and I walked in, only to be stared out of the pub by the locals and the barman.
The Huntsman which is a Fuller's Inn opposite the North Parade bridge, and just by the Church adjacent to the Roman Baths seems the best bet. There's also a taxi rank outside so you can maximise your drinking time before shooting off to the game. There is another little (and I mean little!) pub next door to the Huntsman called the Huntsman Inn where the staff and regulars seemed pleasant and they do some pretty good deals, especially if the Rugby team are playing as well.
Unfortunately though I didn't get to explore the area around Twerton Park, which is 2 miles from the Town Centre, so if anyone else can handy tips to potential travelling fans next week, then please post below. Thanks.
I've never found any of the pubs in Bath hostile or unfriendly and, weather permitting, look forward to visiting the Royal Oak in Twerton on Tuesday and the Old Green Tree and The Star (plus a few others) on Wednesday lunchtime.

I don't know what pubs you went in but the ones we used (Old Green Tree, Raven, Star, Bell, Salamander, Pig & Fiddle and Royal Oak in Twerton) were all friendly and welcoming. None of them seemed at all hostile.
