Whilst it's a shame that tonight's game has been called off, it does give us the opportunity to set a new league record of 11 consecutive league wins at home on Saturday.
It's not every day that our club sets records, and considering the financial position we were in not so long ago it's been a remarkable turnaround by the club, Daisy and the players to get us to where we are now.
I'd urge anyone with any media connections to do what they can to try and publicise the game as much as possible - if we could get a reporter and cameraman down from Sky Sports News to cover the game and perhaps get 30 seconds airtime then it could be hugely beneficial for attracting new fans. It might be a long shot but they did indirectly cover us earlier in the season as a result of us winning the match v Bromley.
I'm happy to send an email and see what comes of it, but it would be better coming from somebody who already has a foot in the door and/or knows somebody there, otherwise its just an email from "some guy" - of which they probably receive plenty. Either way we need to do it in the next 24 hours to give them adequate time to make arrangements.
Who knows - perhaps if we make it 20 wins in a row in the next couple of months then Radio Kent may even consider covering us.
It may not give us national coverage but Alan King from MERIDIAN Radio is coming to the game on Saturday They are giving us great coverage on the Friday night show 6-8 and we are forging great ties with them
Good stuff, the club is certainly moving in the right direction both on and off the pitch - I'm just keen for us to exploit this record as much as possible. If we draw/lose on Saturday then that's it - opportunity gone. If we win, we want the coverage to be of the game that breaks the record, not the game after or the game after that.
As there are no other volunteers and time is of the essence, I've sent the following email to the editor at Sky Sports - probably a long shot but worth a go for the amount of coverage it would give us:
Dear Sir/Madam,
I would like to draw your attention to the current winning run at Welling United of the Blue Square South - a club you covered briefly in a segment against Bromley earlier in the season. The Wings have won their last 10 consecutive league games - equalling the league record - and have a chance to surpass this at home to Dorchester Town on Saturday.
This is a remarkable turnaround for a club which, only two years ago, was under threat of liquidation and was bailed out at short notice through £70,000 worth of funding from our loyal supporters. The club, supporters, management team and players have all pulled together to give Welling a real chance of being promoted as champions this season after a heart-breaking playoff final defeat last year.
Given the exceptional turnaround of the club's fortunes, I believe it would make a great story for you to run as a segment on Sky Sports News. If you are able to send a reporter and camera to Park View Road to see if we can break the record, it would be greatly appreciated as it would not just reward the team's efforts, but the added media exposure would also assist in attracting new fans to the club. The potential record-breaking match takes place at 3.00pm this coming Saturday, 2nd February.
If this appeals then please contact me at my email address and I can put you in touch with the relevant personnel at the club.
