Ah, I see. Well virtually all the clubs representatives use this forum, and it saves me on a phone bill. Plus everyone get's to see the answer to my query.
You need to be aware that any other clubs that have plush facilities dont get them out of a christmas cracker. Either someone pumps money in or the local authority does or they get a huge club in the FA Cup or Live TV Games. In that 32 years the council havent spent a copper coin on their ground. You also need to be aware that even if some bus shelter type covering goes up, your capacity is limited to the area it covers so if its only covering 200 people then the capacity at that end is 200. So unless you can get a huge shed covering the end all you are doing is covering a handful of people and reducing your capacity and spending a fortune.
Maybe we can hold bucket collections at the Valley till we get 100k to cover the whole ends
For me the 12-16 age group is the area where our pricing is completley wrong. £7 is too much for a schoolboy (or girl) to afford for a club they do not support. No doubt they spend this money on sweets and fizzy drinks which they consume sitting around in the broadway, which could otherwise we spent at PVR (if we had the relevent facility).
I'd like to know how much we acually make out of this 12-17 age group in admission fee? Perhaps £2-3k over the course of a season? That's nothing when you consider that this is the future support base of the club. And much of that could be offset by takings from a new fizzy drinks/sweet stall.

We have a thread on the Sutton forum regarding the poor crowds at our games. It is worrying to see a successful team having the same problem. What surprised and irritated me on my visit to Welling was the high admission charge for kids. £7 must be the highest in the league. You should encourage young fans into the club. They love winning teams and once hooked they will support your club for years to come.
Had a visit today from a BT engineer who noticed I am a Welling supporter. He told me he went once but didn't go in as he was put off by £12 admission. I explained our position in the league and upon promotion to the conference it would be a minimum of £15. He was shocked on two counts 1st that we were doing so well and secondly that we are just one league below conference. I really don't know what the answer is to educate people. Incidently this chap was local to the ground.
I think people have a good concept of the 4 league divisions but once you get into non league people don't seem to understand it
Agree entirely. I was telling a friend who lives relatively nearby about Welling having won 12 games in a row and he said, entirely seriously, "Wow, do you play for them?".
I bloody wish - people don't realise the quality of the players plying their trade at this level
Yep exactly....they don't realise the wages....the fact the players have agents (or some of them).....that due to foreign imports the quality of player at our level has greatly increased.........a club like us needs every penny to get a team on the pitch.....we have a pretty low budget comapred to others BUT make the most of it.....I would LOVE to see 1500 every week.....it aint gonna happen soon

When I was 10-16 years old people would take the mickey out of you following the local non-league team thinking it was effectively park football. Considering the amount of people that play football regularly in the UK, and these guys get paid for it, the quality is high, and the footballing style Jamie has adopted, as well as our excellent recent results, make a mockery of that. But if the general public locally arent aware of it who are really the fools ??
Ok I'm no longer local but are there seriously people who live locally who don't know about Welling - who totally ignore the sports pages of any local papers, who never go past the football ground and think "I wonder who plays there?" - I find it slightly unlikely....

Does anyone under 40 seriously read the local paper ?? I don't even get one delivered and I'm 100 yards from the ground. Yes, there are people that don't know Welling even exist.

I live in Greenwich my local papers are the Mercury, News Shopper and Greenwich Councils Greenwich Time. The former covers Charlton with the occasional mention of Millwall. Last time they mentioned us they got it wrong. GT would not cover us but I have seen no mention of any other non-league teams (i.e. Cray Valley) and the News Shopper only delivers to my address once a decade (and that is serious). I am afraid I used to pass Cray Valleys ground on a regular basis and really thought it was just a place where Sunday football took place. I was totally shocked by their set up when we visited last year pre season.
So we're more or less unanimous that leafleting is the best method of promoting the club.
So who would be willing to take part in leafleting?
Is it Paul we email if we're interested?
Also why does the club never ask for leafleters. Charlton do and have now got a highly effective free publicity machine. They even get dozens of people volunteering to clean the stadium for a match ticket!
After this lengthy thread and lots of good ideas and thoughts, what has changed and what are the club going to do now to increase their revenue. Nothing is the answer.

I find this is very much the case,I talk to people and proudly say I support Welling United and they invariably say " who", and often they say "Welyn Garden City"? and these people are Londoners. Then I have to explain the level we are at. I find it a bit frustrating.
Success breeds success, so lets hope eventually our success gets noticed. We are in a highly populated area so to attract a better crowd should happen.
There are people within the club trying to bring us to the fore. We, as supporters must keep trying to spread the word as well.
How about we do a deal and join forces and change our name to Welling & Thamesmead United .. thus raising our potential supporter populace by another 50,000 ... (70,000 if you include Abbey Wood) .. this will give us a choice of 2 grounds to play at in case of snow / rain / fire / leprosy as well
I don't think there is any quick fix , my Stepdad (who I do take to our games when he's down) has taken me to Brackley Town games (When I am up) as its is his "local! club and they had , I dunno , 400 on the recent boxing day game?? (cracking game as well) .. but normally get 250 , but they are BSBN contenders .. it's right at the bottom of a big big estate . you can't miss it ... but it gets flyered .. i'd imagine most flyers go in the bin .. only a tenner to get in as well (and bar was open through out the match)
If we go back to my other off the cuff example (Thamesmead Town .. not a knock , I have lived in Thamesmead 14+ years) .. positions in the league seem to be irrev. now , TTFC are higher then they ever have been but had more supporters when they were in the Kent Invicta League ... They get 42 people per game , we are getting less at home this season then the same time last year ...
I just think non-league is in tough-times .. I will quite happily flyer Thamesmead if I thought WE could get a couple more in the gates , but I think it's case of riding it for a season or two .. at least we are not in the same position as Gravesend & Northfleet , who's attendance has dropped from 1500 to just below 700 within 2 seasons.

You can Email me to register interest in Leafleting !! Only one slight problem at present we have no flyers to distribute
We havnt had it as bad as the other clubs. According to this, we have had the 1st and 2nd highest match attendances this season...Id hate to be Weston
Both Away games so of no benefit to us - one (the Farnborough game) is incorrect as it was around half of that, and the other was a local derby on Non-League Day.
And Boreham Wood get fewer that Weston

I personally think we get the best crowds we could hope for especially when you have Charlton in Champioship football and also have Dartford and Ebbsfleet in the league above us I know next season we will be in the same league of at least one of them, Also Dartford are advetising games in Crayford why arent we doing this we need to compete with these on and off the field

Do they? I can think of WUSA's board member and the commercial manager.
They all read it Russ, or the vast majority, whether they use it, well ...
That's a sweeping statement to make - presumably you have the evidence to back it up?
Depends how you define "club representatives" ... but if you consider it to be board numbers and staff (excluding players), then yes, I maintain the vast majority read this forum. They don't post for obvious reasons, but I know they read it, because many have admitted as such.
