Welling United suffered their first defeat in their opening game of pre-season after going down by five goals to nil on a scorching hot day at Park View Road.
Welling lost another annual pre-season match against local rivals Charlton after being thrashed 5-0.
The Wings began confidently after setting up several chances, which saw striker Ross Lafayette, a rare opportunity to get a shot at the Charlton goal. But Charlton keeper, Nick Pope, comfortably saved a powerless shot.
Welling seemed to be behind from the off, as it took just seven minutes for The Addicks to break the deadlock. A fine through ball towards Pigott gave him the easy chance to put Charlton ahead, and he wasnt going to let the chance go as he lobbed Wings goalie Sam Mott from 15-yards.
It wasnt long before Charlton increased their lead, eight more minutes infact after Pigott grabbed his and Charltons second and started the nightmare for Welling. A cool and ease slot past Sam Mott saw The Addicks go 2-0 ahead.
The Wings nightmare seemed to be complete by half-time as they saw themselves concede a third and a fourth before the interval.
A series of half-time substitutes saw Fraser Franks being the only player of who started the game, to remain on the field, as Welling manager Jamie Day attempted to give as many players the chance to get the feel of the new season.
Efforts suddenly came quick and fast for Welling as chance after chance in an amazing ten minute spell saw the Wings have four amazing cracks on goal, the best of falling to Joe Healy who guided his curling header onto the upside of the cross bar.
Charlton would think after hitting four in the first half, they were assured to gain a few more in the second. This looked to be under threat as the eightieth minute mark approached. The clock was ticking. Then Charlton were awarded a rather harsh penalty to put half-time substitute Jamie Turners forty-five minute clean sheet under threat. JT seemingly got a hand to the shot but was unable to stop Charlton from claiming a fifth and final goal before the full-time whistle.
The weather certainly played a factor in the match, as highs of 28 degrees were recorded. This didnt put the fans off as a huge 2140 were in attendance for the Conference Premier and Championship clubs, a massive and successful money raiser for the newly instated Conference Premier side
