I know we let in a late one this week with Grimsby fans saying we were time wasting (and who doesn't when winning in the 90th plus minute of the game) but there must be a better way of handling those extra 2, 4 or 'Fergie' minutes.

Why not just have an official timekeeper (4th or even 5th official) JUST for injury time, 1st or 2nd half.

Ball out of play - stop the clock, player down - stop the clock, sub - stop the clock etc. etc. Wouldn't work for the whole game but for injury time i can't see a problem.

The ref still indicates how much added time to play and hands over the timekeeping. If a player time wastes by taking an age to take a free kick or a goal kick then he will know it won't make a difference and the play will speed up (if you're winning best to get those added minutes out of the way). Why make a sub if the clock stops when you could probably play out that extra minute with the man on the pitch.

I've seen refs refuse to add injury time to injury time - why? also seen them blow up way before the indicated time.

At Grimsby, there was a stoppage in injury time when Baily Cargill didn't get up. A Grimsby player tried to pull him up by the armpits so Fraser Franks rushed over and bundled the Grimsby player over. A skirmish followed and Fraser was booked. I thought one additional minute was sufficient but the referee felt differently.

The indication of additional minutes happens when the ball is out of play so a minute or more could already have passed before the board is raised.
