poor tonight - passing to the player next to you would have been be a starting point tonight and then start supporting the players with the ball so we have an outlet instead of Knocking hopeful ball all the time.. and lets get a player in to boost the morale around the place.
Respect the welling views in this thread fully but not the dartford troll , i am sure he would swap places in the table, nuff said. Hyde totally deserved it tonight, good luck to them
Highlights of the match and interview with Jamie will be up tomorrow. Jamie's interview is frank and over 10 minutes long.
Jamie and Barry are no idiots, I, and everyone, should have faith they will put this right. They are the best management team we have had at the club in living memory.
Tonight's result was awful, the performance even worse, but predictable given recent form and the team we put out, along with their formation.
McClaren, two games in 12months, Cargill, subbed regularly and a centre back not full back. Doug a defender in midfield. Cumbers on the left having not played there for over a year. Guthrie up top having been playing wide right all season. Harry still looking for fitness if you ask me. The list goes on and on. Injuries yes, but a lot of square pegs in round holes.
Someone mentioned their keeper making some fines saves, lets not exaggerate, he made a couple for the cameras, and a couple of crosses that were miles off target were pushed over the bar through sheer panic on his part.
Everyone nowadays seem to play with one up front, and its cowardice. Yes we have injuries, yes we are not in great form, but if you start with a negative line up you invite teams on to you, and at home to such a poor side we got what we deserved, sod all.
I trust Jamie will give them a piece of his mind, and rightly. Let's hope Saturday proves the start of a good run, but I suspect a bollocking on its own will not be enough, some fresh blood please, and I know Jamie has been trying, Barrie and Barry, open the wallets !!!
We need changes, and now, before the season descends into one of disappointment. A real shame given the promising start.

Keeper, excellent for our level.
Defence, excellent when all fit, not at the moment, and suffering recently, but its merely injuries.
Midfield, too many central players, not enough real width, we don't have a genuine winger. Partly due to how we choose to play, which means no Plan B when games like tonight come along.
Up front, one player, and he is currently injured. Rely too much on him, and when he is injured, knackered, or has a poor games, we have nothing.
A real winger and a real strong striker. Combine the two, £750 a week perhaps, tops. Thats unless we can get someone on a loan for considerably less. Thats 10-15k for the remainder of the season, and given the cost of relegation being more than that, and also the FA Cup money, I really don't see how that can't/shouldn't be found. Now.
Too many players off form
Too many played out of position
Players with little game time in their legs
Roscoe out...no target man to hold it up
Odd substitutions....maybe we were resting them for Woking....lol!!
Odd formation...was Clarke injured if not play him!!
No strikers = No goals
Dyer gone...Jake injured...Daisy injured...Clarke????....=No engine!!
Seemed like we had never met each other the amount of passes that went astray!!
I could go on.....losing to worst team....drawing with second worst team!!!......points are needed....4 thrown away
Morph spot on with the "pass it to the player next to you for a start" comment. For some reason we were trying absurd, raking passes from one side of the pitch to the other, that would inevitably be intercepted by a Hyde midfielder.
I was upset i couldnt go tonight but was at alexandra palace instead watching some gr8 snooker I was disgusted by our play on friday night vs dirtford when taking my son to his 1st game yet we still play one up top vs bottom of the table team :( all i can say is Its obvious we need fresh blood and some more strikers as it has shown we rely on ross far to much! But lets all calm down things can only get better (i hope) maybe the ref will be with us on saturday ^_^

We didn't expect miracles in this league, but you've hit the nail spot on. And which asks the question even more of why we seem so reluctant to change it up sometimes, we have quality wingbacks...so stick 3 cb's on 2 wingbacks and 3 cm's with 2 up top. We actually had the players on the pitch to do this tonight at half time and if we had and still lost at least it would of showed we tried to change it up rather than looking defunct of how to break a team rock bottom with no wins down!
You are going to like the interview with Jamie when its up tomorrow.
He talks about the formation, the substitutions, the performance, the injuries, him being on the phone non stop to bring people in and the problems hes encountering.

Excellent, thanks for the notice Tom, look forward to it.
Everyone has faith in him, I hope he reads and agrees with some of the points raised here. The fact many are repeated by so many people makes them fairly accurate I hope.
I would prefer a replacement for Dyer, this will allow Doug to play on the left until Jack is back. I would keep Connor and Faz on the right side and just allow them to swap runs up and down the wing. This will push Kurtis more upfront to support Ross when he is back.
But we all know confidence is a big thing, lets hope they get it back soon.
Oh and just 1 other thing, fair play to hughes-mason, he's taken a bit of stick this season but he looked a bit lively tonight. Only problem is we lumped balls up to him likes he's roscoe!!! Lad weighs about 8st and is 5ft nothing..

Too true, well done KHM. I feared for him when he took that terrible tumble over the top of their defender. That is passion - something missing from quite a number of our players this evening but not from KHM. Also, if anybody thinks Barrie Hobbins senior is a bit of a cold fish - think again! He was livid and spitting - don't ever doubt that he cares! Time to loosen those purse strings a mite though Bazza - otherwise we need not bother with the ground improvements.
First of all congrats to Hyde and their small band of supporters - they scored two good goals and thoroughly deserved their victory. I am hoping last night was some sort of warped effort by us to help them kick start their season and catch up with D*******?!
Now for our lot. Mmmmm.........where to start.....I think the only two to come out of the game with any credit last night were Butcher and Cargill for me (although centre halves were not too bad) As people have said it was clearly 4-5-1 last night and not 4-3-3 against a side that hadn't won a game all season?! I realise, due to injuries, that there was a need for square pegs in round holes but not sure how they decided on the pegs? Bergqvist as a holding midfielder at home DOES NOT WORK. It might do away from home when up against it and defending but we need to dictate play at home and he can't do that (and stay on your feet please Doug rather than collapse after every single pass/tackle) We are clearly missing Alex Dyer but I felt a bit for the midfield last night - Beautyman must have neckache watching the ball sail to and fro over his head and Healy just had a bad night. Not sure why Guthrie and Beautyman were subbed - the former has scored a couple of late and was a bigger threat as anyone (not much of a statement I know) and HB can (usually) take a decent set piece although the quality of them was abject last night. Faz didn't know whether he was coming or going and Cumbers SIMPLY IS NOT FIT. Again I feel a bit sorry for him but I can't do sympathy at this stage of the season. He has missed 14 months and needs regular football at a lower level to build up his strength/fitness - having to watch him try to do that for us is painful at the moment. KHM ran around a bit but is no threat (hope his injury is not serious) but, if he can't get a start in that team, then surely his time at PVR is up....?
Having said all that two things really worried me and things I have not been use to seeing at PVR over the last two or three seasons.
1. There was little/no direction from the sidelines - normally we are quite active in that regard if the manager is playing or not (and I don't count swearing at match sponsors as direction either....) Perhaps they were as dumbstruck as the rest of us as to what they were watching??
2. There appeared to be a collective throwing in of the towel on the pitch which I have NEVER seen under this regime. Players not tracking back, half hearted set pieces and a general lack of enthusiasm all round. That is very unusual for a Welling team under Daisy and I hope I don't see it again....
Right now 50 points looks a long way away but we should all get there Saturday and support the team/management and hope/pray they produce a lot better than they did last night.
Don't think the fact that Hyde hadn't won before this season matters to be honest. Grimsby lost to us earlier in the season - it happens and people need to get over it. Good luck to Hyde who deserved to win but the fact that we were so poor on the night is more of a disappointment.
We all want to do well but people seem to have lost sight that had we been offered this position at this stage of the season we would have taken that so we have something to work on. FourFourTwo predicted 16th place for us at the start of the season and I would accept that - even 20th will do if it comes to it.
The final whistle stuff was all heat of the moment. The lads behind the dug out were giving it out through the game and 'voicing their disappointment' included mocking players they didn't even know the name of - "Taxi for 33" as one example after one error and another comment about "14". The pity is that I have always found Ash up for a chat about football and had they been voiced differently I am sure he would have found time for a chat about the match, warts and all, afterwards.
Yes people are entitled to voice their frustration and opinions but I didn't hear those sort of comments from regular supporters even though we were frustrated too, and would you expect PURE or any other sponsor to berate the players in that way?
I know everyone wants us to do well, but we haven't had a lot to moan about in the last four seasons, so we need to put this one to bed, move on to Saturday, get behind the team and give them the chance to play the way they can which I beleive will be good enough to get us to 50 points and beyond.

You're correct of course,
BUT let's assume those people who don't know our players names have never been to a game before. They're naive, uninformed and don't realise the quality of some of our players yet, because that frankly appalling performance is all they have to base their opinions on. If they're given abuse by a club employee, the chance of them returning is absolute zero. Like it or lump it, we need new fans to generate more income so that we can boost the squad with a couple of quality additions, and reduce the risk of more performances like last night.

Spot on. Biting the hand that feeds especially with our level of budget is not the wisest move.
I would be astounded if Ashby wasn't instructed to apologise...that's if he didn't do so off his own bat!
Reading between the lines, without a cash injection we are only heading one way. This makes it even more disgusting that the likes of BT have such a say as to who is allowed to play at this level!
Not sure about the formation tonight. We were at a home to a team bottom of the league and had not won a game all season. Why play 1 up front????
-- Edited by Polo on Tuesday 14th of January 2014 10:25:23 PM
Because we always do these days! We're more cautious now. A genuine 4-3-3 might have been more appropriate for this game. We should have flexibilty. That said the performance was so poor..
And the substitutions were odd. Definitely needed to change it, but Guthrie and Fazakerley were by no means our worst players tonight.
Guthrie looked knackered second half (did ok first half though rarely looks a goal threat). Faz may have been precautionary late on. Thought he struggled a bit for sharpness. Playing further forward may have been a factor in this.
I dont think this is the time to jump on the back of the managerial team, we have done extremely well to get into the position we are in, yes we are in a bad spell and heads are down. This is the time to support the team and the management, we have a small squad and we know that we have a good set of 11 players, as soon as we lose the core players we struggle.
Regarding why was Cargill taking the set pieces, he was instructed to take them when we had a set piece on the right side being a left footed player so the ball would in-swing. Also I know Barry shouldn't have done what he did, but I would rather see that which shows he cares rather then just accept a loss to the bottom side.
Healy ought to have been the better bet but one of his was shocking second half so maybe not. Joe was not at his best most of the game and is a little pedestrian at times. Cargill was one of the few to have a go for me second half.
I thought I'd never see a worse performance from this side than at Brislington, where the result glossed over the embarrassment. Today however, was in a whole different league of bad-ness.
If we're honest the performances have been poor for a while but we've picked up the odd point here and there. Changes need to be made, and made before Saturday. Let's see a response like we did after maidenhead.
People can dress it up how they like but today was 4-5-1, not 4-3-3. At home to a side who haven't won in 28 that is beyond explanation. It really was square pegs in round holes. If you're forced to play a right back as your right forward, a striker as a left winger and a centre back in midfield, then clearly you need to be a bit more flexible and change the system. To compound it all by taking off your centre forward and most attacking midfielder (regardless of their level of performance) when you need a goal is...well, astonishing.
I don't believe there was a man of the match award given, which sums it up really.
Oh, and tonight we witnessed a series of set pieces that wouldn't have cut the mustard at schoolboy level. Why is Baily - one of our tallest players - taking corners?
A decent assessment but there's not a lot of room for manouevre at the moment for changes subject to any new blood!
I hated 451/433 last season and the season before and i hate it even more now, far to easy to play against and isolate the striker, we have no plan B it seems if we had it would of been implemented weeks ago even if it was halfway through a game! We need to make other teams center backs work and move and you can only do that with 2 up top. I'm glad it was a tuesday night game, because if it was a saturday and we had a few roaming league fans they would never pay £15 to come back again. Tannoy man summed it up at the end "On saturday the wings entertain woking, HOPEFULLY will will see you there"
To be fair the formation's worked pretty well on the whole during Jamie's reign but it's definitely a more precautionary 4-5-1 these days rather than the exciting 4-3-3 period of Pugh, Pires and Cumbers. Not many play 4-4-2 anymore (though Hyde had two up top!) but far more support is required for the lone forward.
Jamie and Barry are no idiots, I, and everyone, should have faith they will put this right. They are the best management team we have had at the club in living memory.

Most of those players had to play we have few others at present!

I actually thought Faz's enthusiasm for the game and willingness to work hard was his undoing yesterday, along with him being accustomed to playing right-back nowadays. Tracked back an awful lot when there didn't seem to be any real need, and then wasn't advanced enough when we won the ball back. That would lead to Kurtis moving over to his normal right sided position to latch on to a long pass, and then lo and behold there was nobody in the centre to receive a cross!
Lets move on, and make some noise at PVR on Saturday. For some, singing is conditional upon having 10 pints beforehand. If that's what's necessary then I expect you to do so!

Not exactly happy to hear we're signing a central midfielder on loan!
I think everybody connected with Welling was stunned last night, supporters, the management team, the players and despite his obvious disappointment Jamie came out and gave a honest and frank interview and gave us an insight into his thoughts and the reality of the problem's he has to deal with as a football manager. I have no doubt that we will stay up this season and suspect there will be changes made by Jamie in the closed season.
Picking up on Jamison point on roaming fans - it is important financially to the club to try pick up some of the roamer's and get them to "adopt welling as their non league or second team"
Our away match with Dartford the crowd was 1756 and the return was 1336 a difference of 420 @£15 a difference of £ 6,300 going in Dartford coffers and not ours same two teams playing each two weeks apart and 400 people stayed away be it Welling or Dartford Fans Why so many? and how do we address this problem.
Last night crowd 436 - not bad considering CAFC were in FA Cup action. but less than 500 another 70 people @ £15 would have brought an extra £1,050
By picking up some of these floating fans it will make a big difference to the club both on and off the pitch, having said that I think also £15 put people of as well and their lies the problem.
I appreciate that Paul has done a lot of work on trying to promote the club and his posters are great but he is only one person and needs help with distribution and more importantly we need to distribute them to the right place's wherever that is.
