With the pending news we are expecting today I thought it might be suitable to raise this issue again.
If Jamie and his team are to leave for a side in a lower division, it is because that club can offer them greater wages personally and greater budgets to attract players to the club. This is theory offers the management team the opportunity to take a step back but two steps forward in the coming seasons on the assumption they are given the time and support to do a similar job to the excellent one they have done with Welling.
Obviously being supported by Kuwaiti money is not a normal occurrence at this level.
However, the fact remains that we have for many, many years, as long as I can remember in fact, been outbid and lost potential targets because of improved offers being available at "smaller" but certainly lower league clubs.
If we are to maintain our position in this division this season, and beyond, we must address this. Given the food and bar facilities now see profits going elsewhere other than club coffers the best way to do this is via improved attendances and therefore improved commercial revenues and sponsorship that would follow as a result.
Clearly there is a limit to how far we can go ... it'll be a long time before we can compete with ex-league clubs like Luton last season, and Barnet this season, in terms of finance and facilities. However, there are numerous teams in the league we can compete with, and who have similar situations in theory to us, and do better with what they are faced with. I was shocked to see Telford get over 1000 last night for a relegation 6 point on a freezing Tuesday night before Christmas with a small away presence and given their league position and recent results.
So clearly it can be done, but how?
This is not a moan at the good work of WUSA and/or the club and/or Paul, but we can always do more.
Target 1000 has made NO progress unless I am mistaken. If I am mistaken then why has it not been better communicated that myself knows about it as a regular supporter. How can we ever hope that new faces will be attracted when regular customers aren't even in the know.
Something must be done. Can I make a plea to WUSA and the club that a meeting is held asap to discuss plans to make this happen asap. Before anyone comments as before about "less talk more action" or words to that effect, I'd love to be involved, but I can't start the thing myself can I? someone in an official capacity needs to lead it asap and then others, myself included, will contribute/follow.
Couldn't agree more with this. I know time is tight, but if something can be decided upon before the games on the 28th Dec and or 1st Jan where bigger crowds are to be expected. It gives a great opportunity to advertise the plans then to a lot of people who we would probably be targeting anyway
Think a lot of us would get more involved if we felt informed and welcomed so to do.
Key issue now is to get a management team for the football. Last night's result has given us some breathing space...but I feel we have been holed below the water line and some holes will have to be plugged fast to keep us up.
Good Post, am still waiting for the chance to be involved with any initiative but nothing ever seems to happen. Am sure there will be no shortage of quality applicants for the post and would like to see people such as JT and faz as part of any new management set up.
Other than bring a mate day this weekend, which I assume a lot of people do each week anyway, and .. perhaps not the most sensible time to do it with Xmas shopping, no manager and cold weather, are there any initiatives being worked on?
Is Target 1000, or more appropriately, boosting attendance full stop, just going to be talked about month-in month-out forever without anything happening?
Food for thought from a few of today's attendances:-
Maidstone 2226
Dulwich 1163
Ebbsfleet 1069
Bromley 1029
Welling 783
Our attendance must have included at least 200 Dover supporters and neither Charlton nor Millwall were playing. Is it simply the extra cost of Conference matches preventing people from coming to PVR or are there other factors involved? Quite a puzzle for anyone trying to move Target 1000 forward and one which I, for one, can find no easy answers.
The extra cost of Conference football isn't the reason, its about an extra £2-3 at most, and to a normal adult male that won't sway you.
Constructive dialogue was had towards end of December which has perhaps been hindered by managerial changes and the time of year and several games close together, but give 2/3 weeks and I'd hope to see changes, otherwise yes, we should all be asking some serious questions.

783???? So basically they are saying there were 25 people LESS yesterday than attended the Torquay game last Sunday....

Where did that attendance figure come from? Matt Panting's report for the KM/Kent online gave a crowd figure of 906.

783 is the attendance showing on the Football Conference website. Where did the extra 123 people come from? I suspect 906 is nearer the true figure though.

I'm as baffled as you, but the higher figure was given in Matt's report (I would post a link but I have forgotten how to do it - although I have made a note of the reference). Obviously, they can't both be right - unless the lower figure recorded is for paying customers, whereas Matt's reflects the total attendance including, for example, under 12s who go free and passes issued on the day to visiting officials, dignitaries etc.

That said, Kevin, there was no extension this season of last season's festive offer: three home games for less and (I think) no news so far of half-season tickets for the New Year. As a more limited resourced, part-time Conference side, these are examples of initiatives that should be absolute automatics.

Half season tickets? A bit late me thinks as there are only 8 of the 23 home league fixtures left to play!

Alright, while I got my timings wrong, a New Year season ticket then? 8 matches for the price of 6 or 7 or £100?
