Very interesting to see that Alfreton had nearly 1600 there yesterday, a good 800-900 more than they usually get for a game against a side with the travelling support we have.
Now obviously it was a sunny day, a big game in the battle to beat the drop, etc, and we took more than we perhaps would do if the game was in December, but all the same, it must mean at least 500-600 of those extra 800-900 were as a result of the "pay what you want" promotion they ran.
The biggest promotion any game has had this season at PVR was the ladies day game, and a great cause too, but if that much promotion were to go into a pay what you want game, like Alfreton did, then it can work, and it can make the club more money, and improve their on field chances with double the voices cheering them on.
If a good performance and result follows some of those people getting in for not a lot might even return the following week and pay £15.
VCD are doing the same thing this coming Saturday.
Its definitely something we should look into, as I am struggling to find a club that has done it that hasn't benefitted. Given the atmosphere this coming Saturday is likely to be a unique one, is there still time to offer it for this coming weekend versus Southport? It's unlikely to cost the club anything financially, and if its the extra support needed to ensure we stay up then its worth doing anyway.

If Alfreton would have got 850 for a normal game with the support we took - allowing for 300 season tickets and 200 concessions they would have taken £6300 on the gate and a further maybe £1200 on the concessions (as they are between £12-£2), so they needed to clear £7500 or about £6 per person. If you believe some of what you heard yesterday - about people paying less than £1 in some instances then that may be optimistic. We have given loads of free tickets out this year but they don't seem to want to come back when they have to pay. It's not like we are going to make the money on the bar or catering either. I'm not saying it's a bad idea just that it could well be a loss maker with no real longer term benefit
The main positive is that a higher attendance means potentially higher commercial revenue IF you can sustain the higher attendance.
But then you've got to ensure that the higher commercial revenue compensates for the drop in gate receipts from subsidised ticket prices.
I had separate suggestion that I was going to throw out for suggestion after the season finished but might as well put on here to run parallel to this suggestion. I'll start a separate thread for it so we haven't got two debates in the same thread.
Ultimately it's the club and board who can see what are current finances are like and whether there's room in the budget for ticket promotions.
I think it's a bit too last minute to do a ticket promotion for Southport but who knows? Personally I'm gonna treat my mates to tickets for the game. Tight so-and-so's aren't willing to pay £15 for non-league footie. Something I'll touch upon in the other thread.

I'm not sure if Alfreton were really looking to make extra money on the gate. Maybe they just wanted the bigger home gate to get behind the team and create a slight advantage for such a crucial game. Can't see us risking a pay what you want policy but would love to see how many extra fans it would or would not bring in.

That was my thinking too. I believe they wanted to make the atmosphere as horrible as possible.
So, based on those numbers, we would need to roughly triple our crowd for such a game (I realise that off pitch revenue would be much greater but we see precious little of that these days anyway.....)
If well publicised, and the game is well chosen, then it might be worth a go next season.....??

The trouble is if you pick a popular game (ie a well supported away team) then the crowd would be much higher because of the away support, so the crowd would have to be that much higher again. If you pick the sort of game we would attract 5-600 for then I winder whether you'd get the extra through the gate.

Yes, true, but you may also attract new supporters who will stay for years to come. You may also be able to offset some of the losses with backing from sponsors. It's too late for Saturday now but an event like this really needs to be looked at next season, possibly on one of those occasions when there is no PL or Championship due to Internationals.
Rather than pay-what-you-want you could just have a set fee of, say, £5?. But then do you have to pay tax on a donation?
