Attendance how to improve it?

Listening to the commentary on the Barrow game they said we have the lowest average attendance but we have very low prices. I know the club are working very hard with developing the fan base in schools, but what more could be done? We always seee visiting fans bring flags and banners, could games be advertised more in local press or should there be some form of pre game entertainment or after? Perhaps more charitable games with colllections they always boost the atttendace and fanbase. A while back it was mentioned that a fan had an England flag with Welling on it, could we do something with Help For Heroes where ex sevicemen can attend free or at a reduction, after alll so manny men and women from our area have been involved in the recent conflicts, what do you think?

Easy to boost attendance, play well, win, good entertainment and make good refreshments available. just recall how attendance increased when we were challenging for the Conf. South championship. Having said all that though I recall when I first started supporting (30 odd years ago) there were flyers in shop windows advertising the next match. Local pubs and clubs were encouraged to be involved. In short the football club tried to be part of the community that existed in Welling. Times change of course but a bit more local advertising must help. Does the club still have a PR guy?

I honestly can't see our attendances ever improving. We are stuck on 500-600 no matter where we are in any league and would probably pull those exact same numbers even if we were a league team

Many ways we can improve it.
1) Kids for a Quid
2) Discount if a season ticket holder for any Premier League or Championship team.
3) Group offers
4) PAY-WHAT-YOU-WANT (minimum £1)
5) Offer tickets to the local community.
6) Get local schools involved with Welling United.
7) Raise profile of the club using internet.
8) Have another winning run.

9) Have a charity match or WUSA fundraising match after a game, between fans vs players who didnt play on that matchweek. (if there isnt another game for another week only).

We regularly got close or above a thousand last time we were in the conference, and the team struggled for the last few seasons.

Here we go again...

Just refer to the points I've made when this topic has come up over the last 4 years. Nothing changes.

1) We already let kids in for free.

2) We've done this on non-league day although it might be worth looking into extending this. Particularly as Charlton are doing crap at the mo.

3) The wings six picks stubs can be used for 3rd parties not just the person who bought them. That with the kids go free offer means a family of two adults plus kids can go for just £25. So well done to the club on that one.

4) Pay what you want can work but needs a huge publicity drive behind it.

5&6) We already do give free tickets to local schools and have very good links with them. One suggestion may be to speak with Anthony Martin and maybe see if they can give free tickets with every sale they do in the area.

7) I tried doing this a few years back although I hold my hands up and admit I drove everyone mad saying "Don't forget to Facebook like/tweet..." after almost every match report. It worked to an extent although I think the free highlights get a lot more readership than the match reviews. I suggested on another thread WingsTV maybe doing mini-highlights on freeview that can be shared on social networks.

8) We had won four games on the trot recently and it barely boosted the crowds as hardly any of the locals knew we were on a winning run. In the 2012/2013 season we used to do regular leaflet/flyer campaigns and a few dozen of us used to regularly share on social networks as well so more people knew about the long unbeaten run we were on at the time and it pushed crowds near and occasionally above 1,000.

9) No disrespect to the squad but I can't see many current players risking injury for a charity/WUSA match.

Overall the club have listened and done their bit by allowing kids for free and introducing the Wings Six Picks which gives a discount on ticket prices without undermining the value of season tickets. We need to do our bit by bringing along more friends and family, in particular under 12s, and by spreading word about the club whether that be by leafleting or word of mouth.

Paul normally has some flyers/posters in the club shop. When you next pop into the club shop it might be worth taking a few to ask your local businesses to display in the window. This also gives the club a link in with local businesses which may lead to one or two of them advertising/sponsoring with the club.

The first 3 seasons I watched welling Charlton were playing home games at crystal palace which no doubt influenced our attendance and probably for a while after they returned to the valley. A string of poor seasons before our relegation from the conference probably put paid to many occasional supporters. Winning promotion barely improved home gates apart from the larger clubs visiting contingent so I can't see us ever getting regular crowds of 8-900 again. My grandad took me to my first welling games so perhaps we should target them and their grandchildren together, who knows?!

This might sound a bit crazy but how about having a home game on a Saturday?

Throughout October and November and right up until mid December - we only have one game scheduled for a Saturday.

Yes I agree the casual supporter doesnt know when we play, all part of the ground share? Some good points in some of the comments. Leafletting is a good idea and perhaps Anthony Martin and other businesses could give tickets with house sales or purchases over a certain amount. Local restaurants could give pairs of tickets for spending a certain amount, but perhaps give a lot more tickets to schools. We do have too many home evening games and whilst I enjoy the atmosphere, some are put off taking their kids out on a cold evening. When we do put a good rn together we dont get the press coverage we deserve and ironically last season we got more press from the Brown debacle.

When Charlton moved back to the valley I remember the club setting up a target 10,000 scheme where kids got in for a quid and promoating the club through the schools and local area. This had a big outcome on future attendences we now have an average of 16,000 im sure welling could do something similar .Also perhaps lower the admission prices for a start off I rem the good old days at £13 entrance which I think is the right price for conference football any help on this I can put u in touch with rick everitt at Charlton who knows all about that scheme

Charlton had a marketing strategy which included their community scheme providing coaching to the kids in school holidays and offering trials for the academy and free tickets to CAFC game for 1 adult and child - they also set up a travel scheme and brought fans up from Kent for free on match -day and other initiatives and they had a small budget to work with.

Paul to his credit done some great posters flyers etc last season but that was not enough and he has tried to do his best for the club but he is one person, with a limited /almost non existent budget.

For Project 1000 to work it needs someone to take responsibility of the project build a small team to devise a strategy and have funds to support the project and until that happens it will never get of the ground.

if it does get of the ground our initial target area in my view should be Welling/Bexleyheath/Sidcup and Bexley

Grays Ath fan looking forward to the game Sunday.

We have a similar problem trying to boost attendance,as we ground share and play at Aveley we have lost a fair number of supporters, although they still follow results

but will not travel the three miles to Aveley!!

Bearing this in mind we have carried out two leaflet drops one last season and one at the start of the current campaign,we included all our August September and October league games with a tear off voucher allowing £2 off the adult admission price for September and October league games. We also included on the leaflet the names and logos of all our sponsors which they were all appreciative of,we distributed 10,000 leaflets to all homes in the Grays area and also had a stall outside the local Morrison Supermarket. The stall had on display photos of match days old programmes etc.The response we got I am not going to say was a dramatic increase in gates although we did see some old faces, the main thing was we raised the profile of the club.It was amazing the number of people we spoke to at Morrisons didn't realise we were still in existence or played at Aveley.

We have a Facebook page and we use Twitter, all keep the name Grays Athletic in the local public eye, however as others have stated on this thread results and success usually see the crowds returning but you have to work at promoting the club in this Internet age.Supporters also design print and distribute posters around the area.

Back to Sunday one thing we supporters do have in common, the Knowledge that Jody Brown is clueless re man management and PR!!
