Each season I've been going (from 1985) I've never really expected much as I knew since we won the Southern Premier things would be stacked against us. In that I mean our attendances, our ground, limited funds, lack of staff and so on. On top of that we had teams like Barnet, Wycombe, Stevenage, Lincoln - the list goes on. We couldn't, and can't compete, with some of those teams and that's fair enough but we should at least be giving it our best shot. We aren't at the moment.
There's been much stronger Conference leagues in the past but this season should be one we can stay up in and bank as one of our 'punching above our weight' cards . The club is either staying loyal to the present management because there's no other option, too much compensation to pay out (doubtful) or not doing the right thing.
I hope get we get a change as the Conf South is very strong - we won't be back soon. Whatever happens; Faz is a playing legend, I hope the fans and Faz always remember that. Let's not forget how Rambo was boss - didn't work out - but still welcome at the club and fondly remembered. BUT we need a change.
I can only recall very very few ex Welling players who have not been well respected when returning to PVR. Someone like Faz has played his heart out for the club and will always be fondly remembered for that.
But each passing week is eroding that "legendary" status.
The management role is very different from the playing role, so even a very well respected player, like Faz, cannot be expected to automatically be a good manager. The Management Team may well be good at the theory, they may well be good at getting and keeping the players fit, but I just don't think they can motivate the guys, as a team, on match days. Some players, a very few, put in a good shift, but that is more from self-motivation, I suspect, than Managerial inspiration. We need a leader out on the pitch as well as improved man-management off it. So as we've all said before a change, NOW, is essential.
Firstly let me say that, like virtually everyone else, I feel that a management change is now required if we are to have any real hope of avoiding relegation. Most importantly now, in view of the obvious feelings amongst even the most loyal fans, I feel the time has surely come for the board to make it clear what their position is. Either they should sack the management team and urgently look for a replacement who might have time to bring in a player or two, hopefully a striker of course, who might turn things around, or they should state that they retain confidence in the existing management. If they decide on the latter I feel that whatever our thoughts on that decision we should get behind both the management and the team as they would be our only chance as I do not believe that a change in March for example would give a new manager enough time to arrest the decline. Please Barrie and Barry let us know your thoughts.
